Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

Why am I finding this thread more interesting than our regular season thread?

Easy. Because hope springs eternal, and we're all looking for a ray of hope amidst the program's current gloom.

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

Perhaps, you could ask Anthony (in your likely interview with him) which particular coach(es) on the UNH staff was/were active in his recruitment.

Beat me to it ... the question everyone wants to know the answer to these days I guess. :)

Physically, it looks like we've got Quast's replacement ... but with someone who was en route to Dartmouth, hopefully a smarter player. There's a few too many "high motor" type, and "good" but not great comments in the player assessments to make me think this kid comes here as a high end recruit. Guessing the coaches may have seen something in his makeup, and are hoping that once he gets past the surgeries that cost him the entire season last year, he'll be a hidden gem type. Fingers crossed, he'll develop into one of those puck moving defensemen the program is so short of this season (and last, bar Pesce). Good to see some recruiting activity nonetheless. :)

And it looks like he's en route for next season...which to me is the most important 😉 Haha Chuck your "smart" comment hey that's a good thing out there on the ice!!

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

Chuck, the team is going to get worse before it gets better. My prediction is that both Poturalski and Eiseerman will leave so, unless Robinson is the second coming of Ken Dryden, my guess is that next year's record will be worse than this year's. It's the way it went in the late 80's. You gotta bottom out before you can rebound. Process will take at least one more year to start going in the right direction. We can only hope.

Before break I would have though Poturalski was out the door but his second half I think keeps him here. His lack of speed, inability to play well with physical play against him, and what I see is lack of effort at times will not transition well to the next level. He needs to get stronger physically as well.

I was actually more surprised with Greg's expectation that Eiserman would be leaving.

He hasn't exactly lit it up in Hockey East these first two seasons of his career.

My concern is the sub-par performance of the program may have more to do with potential departures than any "readiness" issues. Honestly, neither of these players is ready for the next level just yet. But they may go anyway.

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

I think that if their NHL organizations want them to play at the next level this coming season, then that is what they will do. I cannot blame them it the money is there, as there is always the chance that they get injured in D1 next year and end up with nothing, other than another year toward a degree, of course.

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

He was on campus Monday. Souza was most active.

And for the record the only reason he became available is because he could not get through admissions at Dartmouth.

He'll be here next year, and we weren't the only HE school in on him.

Poturalski hasn't been drafted, so unless someone comes in with a FA offer, he has no one to answer to. Eiserman is a 4th round pick who hasn't even come close to meeting his potential - much less mastering his current level - to show he is ready for the AHL. Why any kid would leave school voluntarily to play in a goon hockey league that pays peanuts like the ECHL is far beyond my comprehension ...

Eiserman isn't going anywhere. And you can rest easy, Pots has told the staff he is going to be staying for his JR. year as he needs to develop more physically and is going to try to graduate in three years if possible.

Two quickies. Is 6'3 Green and 6'3 Wyse just coincidence or a preference.
Does Wyse fill the targeted D recruit this year, or is he a get of opportunity, with perhaps another original target also in the works?

Preference. The coaching staff has noted numerous times this season that other HE teams are just flat out bigger then UNH.

Opportunity. He came available and numerous HE teams were offering. I believe someone in the original 2016 incoming class is going to be pushed back a year now, no idea who though.

Nice to get some news here!! Bet it's one of the Liam's (last name escapes me). Wonder if Nick Nonis will come next season... EDIT: Darcy....

UNH is certainly one of the smaller teams in NCAA hockey - but it is more so on the front end than the back. Its hard to blame the defense's struggles on size when you have Quast (6-4), Boyd (6-3), Chanter (6-3), Maller (6-1) and Marks (6-0). What the defense lacks is hockey sense, the ability to win battles and puck moving talent. Cleland is just 5-11, one of the smallest defenders they have - but there's no doubt he's their best. Size only matters in college hockey if you can actually play. What little I can find on Wyse does indicate he skates well for a big defender - hopefully he can defend and handle the puck at a similar level. Green is still a bit of a mystery until he moves up a level.

Adding some size is fine, but what this defense REALLY needs is a Jake Harrison (5-9) / Ian Mitchell (5-10) type or THREE...

If they want to start upgrading the defense, they really should offer these three by yesterday...

It's like we're the same person, right down to immediately thinking of Harrison. Please let's not go too far down the Gendron path of toughening up so recruiting Malcom Hayes, Holloway, Cochrane to get size back there.
Remember coach tippett noting that big defenders seem good but then you realize the reason they are defending because they can't get the puck out. Bc routinely is a smaller team.

As you say, Wyse seems not one dimensional, so a good get. Still, need Mitchell or Harrison.
