UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

I know, and we are somewhat reactionary. But you emphasize the size in each of your three points. Just get us the 5'9 Mitchell and 5'9 Hillis and we'll get off your back ;)

That's fine, but skill needs to be the more important priority. And it's way past due to start adding some of that skill...

Everyone talks about the bigger guys that can't play on the roster. Most of them being on the backend. I believe Cleland is the only scholarship player on the blue line. Might be time to change that philosophy.

If that's true, than that is incredible neglect from Borek and absolutely needs to change...

If they're looking for size and skill then here are some kids to offer immediately:

http://stats.ushl.com/ushl/ushl/en/stats/player.php?id=496
http://stats.ushl.com/ushl/ushl/en/stats/player.php?id=143
http://bchl.ca/player?playerId=3970&season=25

But that shouldn't keep them from taking long looks at Hillis, Mitchell - as Watcher mentioned - or Harrison (5-9), Sandhu (5-7), Ward (5-9), etc...

Are they after guys aggressively, or are they as hesitant and indecisive to offer/pull the trigger as it seems. If they are being aggressive, are they losing or just waiting on extended offers?

Frightening, but hardly surprising IF this is true (and I'll take the poster's word for it).

Harry Quast and John Furgele are the only 2 UNH defensemen who did not sign a National Letter of Intent. Did you mean that Cleland is the only defenseman receiving athletic scholarship money this season?

I don't want to put words in his mouth, but that was my interpretation. Thinking about the group, I don't feel that its outside of the realm of possibility that Dawson and the sophomores are still waiting their turns for any substantial aid. That leaves Quast as a senior walk-on, Cleland and Maller. So the only real surprise would be an upper-class Maller not getting any money.

Also, hockey is an equivalent sport - and in an equivalent sport it takes all of $1 in aid to sign and NLI. You'd be shocked at how important that is to players. I've seen numerous kids across numerous sports beg for book money or less solely so they can participate at signing days for their HS. There are also lots of schools that don't differentiate in their releases between NLI's and financial aid agreements.

Most importantly, they have all played like walk-ons - but that's what happens when you recruit so poorly on the back end that half of your rearguard are mid- to late-summer emergency recruits...

I believe he is excluding Maller who didn't play, and Chanter, in the stands, who probably get scholarship money. I expect he overlooked Marks, who pretty surely is on some scholarship. But to your point, I would have thought that with Masonius' money free (and Foegele's money), then how do they not bring in a defenseman next year (until Wyse sort of fell into their laps)?* (That was also the basis for my surprise at Hill getting a fifth year, and presumably some money, when UNH had fulfilled its four year commitment to him and could use the money elsewhere.) Head scratchers.

** leaving aside Quast-lite Nonis, and local project Liam Darcy.

From the Maine thread
I was critical of Tim for not being able to get more than just one quality line. He understood the college game and knew how it was allowed to be played. Gendron is obsessed with the physical part of the game to a fault. As others have said, this program has a long road ahead to once again be respectable.

Let's not follow him off that cliff.

The more I poke around the internet for this kid, the more I like including: The Rivers School, Mr. Shawn McEachern, Admissions Officer, Assistant Director of Athletics, (Hockey - Boy's Varsity Head) Coach.

It is not true that Cleland is only scholarship athlete on blue line. There are at least 7 that are on some scholarship. He may be the only current defensemen with full ride but I cannot confirm that.

That's what I meant to say, Cleland is the only full ride, and its the norm to not have a lot of full rides on the backend. My point was that it might be time to allocate more to the backend.
