UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

The commentators in the FSU/SCSU game were just discussing Ferris' defensive recruiting philosophy. Apparently Bob Daniels doesn't care about size, he cares about skill and guys who can make the first pass...

Hmm, might be something to that as they're one win away from their third regional final in five years. They're certainly not getting there because of their amazing facilities!

You're darn right he did...

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

Dan what do you know about this player? Two way D man....just what the Wildcat ordered!!! Looking forward to reading CHC's story too!!

I don't know anything about him - if he is the great-skating, two-way D that C-H-C describes him as than its a good start. They need a couple more puck movers and I still hope they'll take a look at some of the guys already mentioned in this thread. He went 3-13-16 in 26 games as one of the younger kids on the U16 team this year, hopefully he'll make his way to the USHL asap. The Skipjacks are a solid organization, with a couple elite young kids in Giles (BC) and Wiseman (UConn). They have another 2000 averaging a PPG in Joey Baez out of Tampa who may be worth a look. There is also a 1997, named Shane Gaudreault out of Annapolis, MD (don't get too excited - he's already 19)...

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

You sure about that CBA rule?

I see the language that would make one think that as far as rights retained differences based on "as long as the player enters college by the second June 1st" etc. etc., but I don't see anything that actually says what happens if the player does not enter college by the 2nd June 1st following being drafted.

In fact there have been a handful of players, at least one in every draft year for the past few, that have played 2 years of junior after being drafted, and there doesn't seem to be any buzz about their draft team losing their rights.

The most high profile of them in recent memory would be Miles Wood of BC. Played 2 years of HS still after being drafted in 2013 and was a freshman this year. Nothing that seems to indicate he is not currently a NJ Devil's owned prospect.

No, I was wrong about the rule. There is a separate provision for players who enrol two years out. This requires that the team make an offer to the player in order to keep his rights. So, the same concept of keeping the players' rights, but with the wrinkle that you do have to make the offer, and the slight chance a player would take it.

C-H-C is correct that this is possible, and this makes it makes sense that Robinson could spend another year in juniors. UNH would certainly benefit if he did so, not tying up so much scholarship money in net.

Next season, yes. Season after that (2017-2018) - Coach Umile's goodbye tour, when Robinson would finally have to come to play - the Tirone/Clark/Robinson logjam would still remain in place. Hard to believe by then that all three wouldn't be on full scholarships (with two being seniors, and Robinson being an NHL draftee), but at least the logjam would only be one (and not two) seasons. We'll wait and see, but Robinson waiting another season after his limited action this past season seems to make a whole lot of sense for all involved.

You just know that Danny the Boy Wonder will be getting all the minutes during the goodbye tour....

Which leads me to wonder - will there be gifts at all DU's final appearances in visiting rinks? And if so, what might said gifts be? (Please be more creative than predicting "turtlenecks")

Gift is a win to the home team

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

Grasso is red-hot, six goals and eight points in his last three games and now up to T-30 in USHL points. Meanwhile, Blackburn and West Kelowna with huge upset of Penticton to advance to round three of the BCHL playoffs...

Let's hope not. I really detest all these silly farewell tours we see popping up around the sports world these days.

There is currently only one (1) guy in Hockey East who arguably even deserves one, and it's not Coach Umile.

Yeah, but Coach Bazin is a long way from retiring.:D

So, UNH has traditionally gotten Ontario kids on campus during their school breaks in February. (Leblanc, Foegele, Fregona). Any chance we might get some news the next two weeks??

Guess not - just the occasional under the radar pick-up while the remaining top talent dangles right in front of us, soon to be snapped up by someone else...

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

How can we assume UNH is not talking to these kids we know that are out there and we'd love to have? Do we know the recruiting habits of our coaching staff? I guess you could say that they aren't committing, therefore, we must not be talking to them. Surely our coaches know who's who out there in the recruiting landscape (I sure hope they do) OR, we are talking to them, and they aren't committing (which I personally assume is what could be happening more than not...) When they de-commit, well, that's an entirely different scenario, isn't it...

Last night during the QU game they talked about how Rand Pecknold would travel to 'parts unknown' in Ontario to get the QU name out there, planting seeds, so that when a player like a Michael Garteig (sp) became known, the QU brand was already part of the equation. I know our assistant coaches travel as well, not sure about DU...

No one knows for sure, and the coaching staff isn't likely to share that info with us anytime soon. I guess the only way to know, is when the word comes down. Otherwise, I'm not sure its fair to assume our coaches aren't out there working to get these blue chip players. I certainly HOPE they want these players, and in listening to MS at a FOH meeting, he talked about how in today's recruiting, everything about a player is right out there online/no surprises with talent. It's a matter of selling the program and these kids have alot...to choose from. (duh)

No way to know...When someone gets 'snapped up' by another team, it doesn't mean we didn't talk to that prospect...the prospect has other ideas about where they wanna play. Wouldn't it be nice to see a report of some kind, one that showed who's been targeted, then contacted...and the results of such contact? I know it's coming in dribs and drabs...unlike the big 10 of a couple of years ago, and I can't remember how fast they came in; wasn't paying attention like I am now. Plus...quantity doesn't mean always mean quality but I don't have to tell you guys that...

Any other reasonable insight, is always appreciated!

It was British Columbia. He would stay with relatives there and drive around with them scouting players. QU was one of the early teams taking guys out of the BCHL back in the late 90's.

Thanks....appreciate the correction and the history lesson. I apologize for not knowing much (if anything) about QU's recruiting history, but it sure is paying off now. Last night was the first time I had seen QU play a full game. I knew they were good, but was very, very impressed with them. BC has their hands full (as does QU) and it will be a great FF!!

Yup this story sounds familiar. Coach with a place to stay in B.C. out there selling a program the kids had never heard of and bring them east for a rising college hockey team.

Rand Pecknold stayed with his in-laws
Brian McCloskey maintained a home there

Only one of these things is still occurring and that team is still excelling.
