UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Here is the link to an interesting article I found on Hockeybarn.com, which is a newer site that covers high school hockey in Mass, NH and CT. This article is announcing their players of the year, and it says that Mike Vecchione, a junior from Malden Catholic, will be playing for UNH. Has anybody heard anything about him?

Rock.. nice find! Interesting that they refer to his time at Malden Catholic in the past tense.. or at least it reads that way.. coul dbe heading to Jr next yr.. MA POY- beating out the Fitzgerald kid. Regardless, it reads as though he's got some good tools..

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Still a little lost, who is the linemate?

Ryan Fitzgerald.. a new BC Commit..

odd though.. Mike and Ryan's commitment don't show on Heisenberg as of yet.

Edit.. Ryan is on there 3/23

speaking of his signature - I read that to be more along the lines that he hopes the coaching staff finds or are offered something else to do! That- and he's already on to the off season!

Watcher.. I hope they can impress you this year! It ain't '99- but remember you only have to beat the teams you play!

In his signature, obscure style, I think watcher was referring to the story that UNH was primarily interested in recruiting Sean Collins, who was Saviano's linemate at Reading High School. The implication is/was that UNH agreed to recruit Saviano if Collins commited to UNH.

Understood that part, thanks anyway.

Was just trying to figure out who the other was...

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Probably doesnt have the grades to get into UNH

Yea I hear for a hockey player you need an IQ of 200 to get into UNH. One guy just kept posting it last week so it must be true. I'm surprised they let hockey get in the way of their primary sport - the academic decathlon.

No, I literally broke the dam. I drove the boat into it and broke it.

Watch out Shawn, he might just revert to that really really clever hillbilly angle again :rolleyes

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Special thanks to RockTheWhit for discovering this information on Mike Vecchione. Why is this the first time his name has been mentioned on this thread? I thought we had access to sources with all the inside information.

Hokydad's information on Mike Vecchione appears to be first-hand. If Vecchione ends up playing for UNH and Hokydad's assessment is legit, then UNH has landed a top recruit.

HokyDad makes large statements all over the board. He waves to some other hockey dads and thinks he knows it all.

Sadly, he knows some stuff, but his asinine comments reduce his credibility tenfold.

Having seen MC and AP play a few times this year, sadly (I like UNH more than BC) Vecchione is the third best prospect out of the three (Silk, Fitzgerald and Vecchione), but has some upside.

Have never made a statement that was not first hand, period.

Just like the guy last week slamming Jay Camper, all bs. Just saw this on him yesterday..

USHL Update - Week 25
Notes
Chicago Steel forward Jay Camper has scored three goals over his past five games and has an even-or-better plus/minus rating in 17 straight contests, best in the USHL.

On Vechionne. He is a late 94, a matter of months older then both Sil and Fitzgerald, 2 very good players. No way anyone can say he is not as good a prospect as both. Silk maybe a little better upside because of size. Vechionne and Fitzgerald were on a line and the entire line of those two and Collier had success but Vechionne was the one who carried it. He gets no credit because people try and portray him as older. He is not, only perceived that way because he is a jr were they are freshmen. He is a traditional hs kid who will graduate at 17 where others do at 19, not his fault. 1/2 years in USHL and he will be a top F in Hockey East. Him and Gacek were top 2 at 93 level for Minuteman Flames growing up and they are still comparable. He is not the third best of those three, all three are very good, third best promoted? Yes, third best? Nope...

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Appreciate all the additional information you and Hd are providing. Based on the HockeyBarn article, Mike Vecchione has two major upsides from a UNH perspective. First, he's had an A-average in his course work so he shouldn't have any problem meeting UNH's academic standards. Second, in the opinion of the HockeyBarn staff, he was the Massachusetts Player of the Year.

I should clarify, even though I never said anything negative about Vecchione. I think he is a great player, but having watched AP and MC play 4-5 times each, I think Silk and Fitzgerald have more upside. Vecchione could fit the UNH mold of speed and using the big ice surface to his advantage.

Although not a fan of UNH, I've always admired the skill and talent that Umile has brought in, especially late 90s-early 2000s. Watching Krog, Mowers, Bekar, Nolan, Haydar, Saviano, Collins, both Hemmingways, Gare, etc hit the opposing blueline with a head of steam and what always seems like 3x2 is a thing of hockey beauty.

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Thanks for this updated information. Encouraging to see that NHL Central Scouting projects Grayson Downing and Casey Thrush as potential 1st Round picks at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in June.

The lists list the top 10 from those leagues or region...the number lists the number of possible 1st rounders...I dont think they are the "ones".... prob mid/late rounders

Correct. CHC is a little fragile this week so I didn't want to be the one to point it out and burst his bubble.

Coyle and Hayes are your two first-round potential players listed in the same category as Thrush (who is way back at 97 in the midterm rankings for NA skaters).

Downing's group had just 1 potential first rounder listed (Downing was listed at 110 for NA skaters in the midterm rankings with several in his grouping ahead of him - Bennett, Melchiori, Stoykewich, Guptill to name a few).

Of course, you will see changes in the final rankings but it would seem highly unlikely that the players they're talking about (but not talking about) are UNH recruits unless Downing makes a huge huge jump.
