UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

I was just looking at the scoring leaders among the NHL rookies. JvR is currently 7th with 14 goals and 19 assists in 33 games.
Interestingly, of the top 10 rookie scorers, JvR is the only one that came directly from the NCAA. All others came from the Canadian Major Junior Leagues, except Niclas Bergfors who came from Sweden.

It's so cool...that's exactly one point per game :D

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Frustrating Followup:

Ryan Bourque is currently the 6th leading scorer on the Quebec Remparts with 19 goals and 24 assists in 44 games.

Why is that frustrating? It's his loss not UNH's. Why would aprogram want a kid to come in and play a year and always be looking to leave? FYI, the Q is not even close to OHL or WHL. way off from where it used to be.

Bourque is a good player but not the college mold. His loss

He is 6th in scoring and gets eevry single benfit of the douby times 50. Gets lines built around him, eevry single power play, where most points come from. With that type of favoritism, should be top 10 in league, but is not even top 100.

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

BC just committed a player (Austin Cangelosi of Northfield Mt Hermon) for the fall of 2013. He's just the second player to commit to a school for 2013, the first of which is going to Miami. At this point (and I know it's early and players are bound to de-commit and whatnot) UNH has only one player committed for 2012 in Casey Thrush. I found that interesting.

This past month UNH has lost 2012 Brendan Silk, and 2013 Austin Cangelosi and Ryan Fitzgerald (whose dad, Tom, was recruited and coached at Providence by Borek and Umile). 2012 Zemgus Girgensons to Vermont, 2011 Brendan Woods to Wisc.

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

{I posted this on the East Regional thread. The reasons for the discrepancies in attracting NHL picks are subject to an ongoing discussion on our thread.}

A Tale of Haves and Have Nots
Number of NHL Draft Picks:
Denver - 13
Cornell - 5
UNH - 5
RIT - 0
For better or worse (I think worse), there is a dramatic imbalance in which teams attract potential NHL "talent." Of course, having so many draft picks does not guarantee victory. Two Hobey Baker Finalists playing in Albany - Ben Scrivens and Bobby Butler - were not drafted by any NHL franchise and they have been keys to their teams' success.

The difference between the #1 and #4 seeds in the other Regionals are also stark:
Miami - 7 vs. Alabama-Huntsville - 0
Boston College - 10 vs. Alaska - 0
Wisconsin - 11 vs. Vermont - 4
Cheering for the underdog helps make the games interesting and when they win (e.g., Holy Cross) it's thrilling for their fans. But unfortunately, the deck is stacked against most teams and a select few play with a stacked deck.
Both will be better off they can sign where they want at the Cap and walk with 85K and if they see the show (remember they choose) 10 times that- nice!!

Fitzgerald to BC as well?

From that article.

The 18-year-old Coloradoan was acquired in a midseason trade from Fargo. A University of New Hampshire commit, he is 9-1-1 in 13 games with Cedar Rapids, including two shutouts, has a 1.65 goals against average and .941 save percentage.

Seem the change of team did him some good.

Digi, with Wyer and Campbell comming in seems like things could be an interesting battle in net. (Edit: looks like Campbell might now be a 2011 as Wyer moved up to 2010.)

Also amazing you coached and guy and can't land his kid.

Against BC, you expect to bat .100 So, its hard to kill them for any particular at bat. But when you start going 0-15, maybe its time to pinch hit.

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Sure they lost Wey last yr, but picked up Knodel as a result, I beleive. Sounds like he'll be decent..

Didn't they get Moses and Henrion away from BC?

Ceraintly stings to lose out to any school - but doesn't conventional wisdom say that soo many early commitments is as big of a risk as it might be potential reward, both flight risk as well as developmental risk. I played with a lot of kids that were "best in State" so to speak at age 15 or so, but by 18 & 20- they were still good, but many had either caught up or surpased them.

BC leads the country in '94 commits... will they all pan out? And doesn't this give a potential edge to other schools who have $ left a yr or 2 or 3 from now?

Here is the link to an interesting article I found on Hockeybarn.com, which is a newer site that covers high school hockey in Mass, NH and CT. This article is announcing their players of the year, and it says that Mike Vecchione, a junior from Malden Catholic, will be playing for UNH. Has anybody heard anything about him?

Great player and great kid. Was recruited BY PC, BC , BU etc

Close to Serino saw wanted UNH, where he used to coach.

Kid is fast and a hard worker with high end skills and hands.

Always a top player for his age but took the low key approach and is just hitting the radar. great pick up for UNH

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

It will be interesting to see if Mike Vecchione follows Saviano's path and goes directly to UNH, without stopping off in junior hockey.

The issue will be his age. He is a late 93 and already a junior in hs. Will graduate next year and I think looking at 2012. Will be 17 when he graduates and will do at leasta year, maybe 2, I hope in the USHL.
