UNH at Maine - Feb 5/6 (Flame on!!)

Re: UNH at Maine - Feb 5/6 (Flame on!!)

I don't have a good feeling about this coming weekend. Maine looked terrible back in November, but that was November (and I was comparing them to Miami, who looked *ing good). I would be ecstatic with a split. From Wally's description below, Maine sounds similar (at least on D) to Merrimack. UNH got to the net against MC, but had trouble beating Braithwaite. We could see similar offensive struggles this weekend.

UNH has owned Maine in recent years so their isn't much to flame about from a Mainers perspective. Hopefully Maine can get some points out of this. I've haven't seen UNH play but I suspect their offense is pretty good like it usually is. Maines D isn't that good but Darling has been great since November so we'll see.
Sandbagger! :p

Off topic a little bit here, but did any of you Mainuhs realize that Mark Nemec is in the mechancial engineering program? How he is able to balance that workload with hawkey is indeed impressive.
Wow. All jokes about Maine's academics notwithstanding, that is pretty impressive.

Wow...midway down on page 2? What has this thread/flame war/rivalry come to???
Maine fans sandbag, and UNH fans have been relatively quiet this year. Leads to a boring thread.

Not sure how much you can take from either team in the early season matchup, look how UNH faired (fared?) the previous and following two weeks. It wasn't until mid november that they started the roll that they're on. Both teams have improved 10-fold from that matchup over 3 months ago :p

The mistique of Alfond, I'm not sure its there anymore, and defintiely isn't in the heads of the players who have played there in recent years. Will that return? Both teams are relatively young, though UNH is being led by veterans up front. The only two times UNH has lost to the Black Bears in the last 10 or 11 games has been in Manchester, I believe, good to see them have some success at the 'Fond after many years without a win up there...

Will Friday's game be available online to watch?

I believe that was my point. :p

As such, my final score prediction, using simple math, is:

UNH 50, Maine 20.

Or the other direction:

UNH .5, Maine .2

If you then assume that each team improved 10-fold on both offense and defense, my final final prediction is:

UNH 25, Maine 4.

Yeah, that works. :D

Re: UNH at Maine - Feb 5/6 (Flame on!!)

I have watched this board for years and I am quite surpirsed how quiet this thread is. In past years there was always finger pointing back and forth with these two teams.
I witnessed the game in November and Maine certainly had not hit their stride. I witnessed also all the Timmy bashing. I am another of the NH Fans that is glad Maine has come back and that these games mean something for both teams. If either team wins both games (which I doubt) there will certainly be some clucking of their feathers.
It is games like this that make college hockey the great game it is.

Man, what great uniforms, eh? Still the classiest in cawledge hawkey.

Ya know, I just gotta say it. I just love this group of Swedes on the team this year, as always. Here's a trivia question for you Mainuhs (and maybe even some uhn'ers!)

Name, without looking, as many Swedes that have been Black Bearz over the years (thats part one), and part two, name one or more of them who have had signficant contributions or goals in the past. :)

(Ten point question)

My wife says the only 2 that matter are Big Sexy and Marcus

Re: UNH at Maine - Feb 5/6 (Flame on!!)

Uh...

Nyquist
Andersson
Gustafson (I think...and need I really list him for significant goals?)
Ek
Lundback (both of them)

If I'm not mistaken, the two recent Swedes are the first we've had in a while aren't they?

Curious about seating up at Alfond . . .

Last time I went up, we had seats in section P, if I remember right, and there was a strong group of UNH fans in that section.

The trip before that, I remember we had seats under the balcony, and the UNH fans were strung out in a row around the arena.

This year, we are in section I, under the balcony. I'm curious if other UNH fans, who got their tickets through the UNH Box Office, are sitting in section I, or are we spread out again?

See you up North!

Just search for the continuous stream of sand and gravel leaking from seats above your head...once there, sit down and shutup.

I would imagine most are in section I, the classic visitors section.

The only one that REALLY matters is #5 (the big Sweede) Ek. I friggin loved that kid. It seemed like he played 8 seasons. ;)

Let's see if the memory is working - seems like I remember Ek in the 2000 Frozen Four semifinal against NoDak blocking a shot in what appeared to be a cup-check, then heading to the bench in CONSIDERABLE pain.

What a great kid, we had him at the house and he was late for breakfast but apoloiged, followed by comsuming a meal big enough for Paul Bunyan. About 2-hours later we were going to have dinner and he ate more than Michaud, Cardinal and Kariya together.:D

He told Gionta what he really thought of him after the HEA Championship game at the Garden.:p
