Stick with SPY and QQQ. You'll thank me laterJust so you know, everything UNH is not all bad. UNH happens to be the ticker symbol for United Health Care....its stock just recently hammered from a high of about 606 all the way down to about 287....suspicion of medicare fraud.......a very large haircut. Being the enterprising guy as a I am, I scoffed up a 100 shares at about 295.....count on this, it will in due time rebound to the 580 level or so to fill all the gaps left behind during the plunge......thats a cool 28k profit in my Roth. Sooooo long story short, I now love UNH....UHN on the other hand, meh
starting in the 2025-2026 academic year, the NCAA will eliminate D1 scholarship limits if a proposed settlement is approved, enabling all sports to distribute scholarships more flexibly among athletes. This change is expected to have a significant impact on college hockey recruiting. More details and the latest updates here.It appears UNH has 11 incoming freshman with three transfers - 14 newbies. That's an astonishing number of new players. In light of the clear talent shortage, it's necessary; nevertheless, Souza seems to be treating the roster like a tear down.
Does anyone know what class MacDonald will join - soph, junior, senior?
Has UNH increased its scholarships? Haven't done the math on how they will all fit.
Were the games just not getting fan interest or were the schools not interested in putting on a game like that (esp in Manchester)?Been there, done that with the Riverstone in Manchester. Not compelling enough to garner interest in the long term.
Wouldn't be shocked if we never see ESL if Grout is still in the pipeline.UNH has a new goalie. The attendance/interest in the first few years was very strong, I think a few times they filled the building, over 10,000 anyway ... then, as the Monarchs staked their claim to the area, and UNH receded competitively AND media-wise, attendance started to dwindle. Someone used to have access to a table or grid that showed the year-to-year attendance for the series, but it was a solid downhill slope over time. Were the games just not getting fan interest or were the schools not interested in putting on a game like that (esp in Manchester)?
Thats the stuff my father used to invest in, too too conservative for me....current holdings after just selling IONQ yesterday:Stick with SPY and QQQ. You'll thank me later![]()

IIRC the teams have met several times since, but in their respective home rinks. I don't think a revival of the one-and-done thing would work anymore. The new car smell is spent, UNH doesn't travel like it used to, Dartmouth never really has traveled all that well. It's why I've liked making it different this time around, with the smaller NH school add-ons being close by, and it would absolutely be a big deal for them, and both their diehards and casual fans.
It would be hilarious if the locals (SNHU and St. A's) took the concept, and invited Plymouth State and Keene State to the party instead. Gotta think they'd be able to fill half the building, just out of curiosity for the hockey starved Manch populace, plus the PSU and KSU contingents coming for some big city nights?
They'd probably shame UNH/Dartmouth into the Merrimack/Bentley alternate D-1 foursome ... all the better in the long run, I suppose, as long as it works!![]()
The NH PSU has had some success the past few seasons and the relatively new arena on the edge of campus is a nice hockey venue, and I think a big improvement over their old digs 15+ miles away in Waterville Valley.Ah alright, yeah that’s unfortunate it stayed on the decline over time. It feels like hockey is in a lull in NH at the moment. There’s definitely potential but it doesn’t help when UNH can’t perform. I made it over to Hanover for first round of the ECAC vs SLU and the arena was maybe a bit below half full (that and it was during NCAA championships for skiing)… so Dartmouth is barely going to their own games even in a good season anyways.
Very few D3 schools travel well for any sport but this year will be a good test. Keene and Plymouth have their long-standing rivalry and play hockey against each other for the first time next season. Hopefully will help spark something bigger going forward.
Your father is/was a wise manThats the stuff my father used to invest in, too too conservative for me....current holdings after just selling IONQ yesterday:
LAES, COHR, MARA, AGEN, POET, UNH, SLV, QS, QUBT, AMDG, AI
Normally I would be holding SOXL and possibly TNA to get some more exposure to semis and small caps. SOXL a virtual gold mine. Normally would not be buying something like UNH, but it was such a gift after getting absolutely plowed under , I could not resist.
Truth there. In fact, if you look back across coach Russells's 15 years (which coincides with the existence of the facility), there's a .700 win percentage. Imagine that in Durham!? Thanks for the details on ice quality comparisons between the arenas in Waterville Valley and at Plymouth State. I should attend more PSU games, given that Hanaway Rink is 15 minutes from my house in contrast to Towse Rink at the Whittemore Center in the Key Auto Group Complex in Durham, which is pushing a 2-hour drive each way. Fun Fact: Dick and Peg Hanaway reached all 50 state high points when in their 50’s, including Denali in Alaska, at 20,310 ft the highest point in North America. Maybe we should expand this thread to include the entire USNH (University System of New Hampshire), which would resolve the UNH vs UHN conundrum?Truth there. The only thing to be missed from the WV days is the ice quality. WV had the hardest, most consistent ice in the northern half of the state. Guys loved it. IIRC, PSU had trouble initially with ice quality which was regulated by sensors in the rafters. Again IIRC, water was also a problem...I think it was treated town water which needed to be tweaked, or something like that...
As for the PSU v Keene match-up, all my $$ is on Plymouth.
Right on. Convenient, affordable and a good product for ya. If I still lived up there, I'd probably go to more PSU games v making the treck to Durham. Big advantage that UNH is on the tube a handful of times. Thanks for the details on ice quality comparisons between the arenas in Waterville Valley and at Plymouth State. Any chance that all three (or four?) goalies will see time in net during the season or will one go-to goalie be selected during preseason practice? “Did you say practice? Not a game, but practice?”This is amazing. The most obvious weak link IMHO. The light just got brighter. Kudos Mr. Souza for finding a pathway!! (Forever Optimistic).
Hey Snively. It looks like Grout will be a 2026 recruit now which will give him another year in the QJHL. I'm guessing right now the starting goalie will be determined in practices. Since 2 are Seniors this year Coombs more than likely will be the starter next year? If Grouts as good as advertised maybe not, but will probably get a look or two this year. I'd say UNH is in a very good position at the goalie position for a few years. But as we know the goalie's only as good as the D in front of him.Any chance that all three (or four?) goalies will see time in net during the season or will one go-to goalie be selected during preseason practice? “Did you say practice?
