The Whale giveaway was obviously the turning point last night, but once again (sad to say) the purported "best defensive defenseman in HEA" had another poor performance. I understand why MS7 might want to get behind one of his guys for league-wide honors come March, but I kinda wish he'd kept those thoughts to himself, as Gagne hasn't been anything close to that pronouncement ever since MS7 put it out there. Almost like it's put added pressure on his still somewhat-limited game. Some players are just better off if allowed to toil in anonymity.
Are we experiencing a typical January el foldo from the 'Cats?? Next weekend will tell that tale, but if this team expects to have any realistic shot at a productive March, they gotta turn their form around this weekend down at Agganis.
Just as an aside ... much was made on last night's telecast about how BU is leading the nation in major penalties this season. They added yet another last night, and UNH's failure to take advantage (before Whale's gaffe) was also a big turning point in the contest. That was a big call by the MS7 team, and I was prepared to give them kudos for it ... but (1) they didn't convert and take a 3rd period lead, and (2) later in the game, we got another one ourselves which pretty much ended the game as a contest with six minutes left. UNH can't be all that far behind BU in the lead for major penalties ... so at what point are we allowed to question leadership (coaches AND captain) about the lack of discipline?? Personally, I've always preferred to have a team with a bit of an edge to them, but UNH seems to have been going over that line quite a lot in recent games. Is that down to player frustration, maybe some messsging from the coaches in the room ... or perhaps both?
Things suddenly seem to be slipping away from UNH, and a return to winning ways can't resume quickly enough ...
