UNH 2024/2025 Goldberg Edition

I am pretty sure I cannot name a single NFL coach anymore.

Edit: Nope. Tomlin, Harbaugh and Reid still live.

:p

That's effing hardcore, 'Ref! If Ben Barr has someone reading us for intel, I'm sure a "get well soon" card is on its way!

It's now been two full calendar years of increasingly competitive and entertaining hockey from MS7 & Company, and it's also encouraging that a UNH team has come out of the winter break without their usual hiccup, which seemed to be close to happening yesterday. If the team can keep winning the games they should win, and stay close to even in the more challenging match-ups, they should at least match their RS finish last season, and I'm gonna stick with my predicted Top Four RS finish until proven otherwise. Liking the idea they should be coming up against a kid who was their back-up goalie the last two seasons ... no doubt they've seen him plenty enough in practice to at least have some intel on how to work on his weaknesses. Gotta win the Friday night home date, and then get something out of Saturday's trip to The Hut That Luce Built.

No premature pronouncements yet, but MS7 gets a solid A-/B+ for the first semester. Keep up the good work!

Muszelik hasn't seen the ice since mid November, so I'm not sure he's playing this weekend.

I miss Bobo!

Worry not, Jack ... I get a sense he's still around, at least once in awhile ... just with a different look/sound, etc.

Let me say today, and leave it here ... "Bobo" was (is?) like the USCHO boards version of Led Zeppelin - clearly defined by the era in which he blossomed and ruled, but destined never to come back in original form ... even if you see parts of Bobo on here from time to time, looking and sounding slightly different than back in his heyday. I'm convinced the only way we'll ever see an official return of the GOAT of UNH Posters is if UNH finds themselves back in the upper echelon of NCAA D-1 Hockey someday, making it all worthy of a (one-off?) encore. As with Zeppelin, though ... you can't simply flick the ON switch to revisit such greatness, and I suspect that is Bobo's dilemma. He set the bar incredibly high (low!?) for ROFLMAO entertainment on these boards for a long time, in a fun era, and his identity was/is entitled to a long and well-deserved retirement as he sees fit, with the absence of pressure (on a silly message board, lol!) to re-live his great moments of the past.

Because some folks used to refer to the three of us as "The UNH Three Stooges" back in the day, I've also used that comparison before to folks who've come to the game later that Bobo was always "Curly", the shooting star who shone so brightly, while NickUNH and myself were "Larry" and "Moe" respectively, his eager and willing sidekicks. Nick eventually immersed himself in real-life politics, at a pretty high level, so if he were to visit on here these days, my guess is his participation would be way less frequent, and much more restrained.

I do still consider myself Bobo's "John The Baptist", and when his lower-cases bobo offspring(s) show up, this place immediately becomes more lively and entertaining. It would be nice (but probably very artificial) if we would ever all show up on USCHO as our old on-line "selves" again, but they are both highly successful, great guys in real life who have been great friends when our paths have crossed (and hopefully will again).

Muszelik hasn't seen the ice since mid November, so I'm not sure he's playing this weekend.

Report from mid-November was that Muszelik suffered a lower body injury against BC and probably would not be back until second semester (however that might be defined?). Muszelik was 5-4-1 with 2.59 GAA and 0.894 SV% at the time.

I'll go on the record and vote for Da Big Bad Cow as the Bob Dylan of USCHO. Oh, where have the years gone?

So UNH continues to inch up in the USA Hockey and USCHO polls, 16th and 17th respectively, with an even more surprising 11th place in the pairwise. I'm a bit surprised and may need to eat humble pie as I was quick to jump on MS7 after the less-than-stellar start of the season. But credit where credit is due, MS7 has the boys moving in the right direction and playing pretty good team hockey. Conmy continues to impress and improve. Devlin, LeClerc, and Cronin are all solid contributors, and Whale has been solid. Now to the meat of the season! Can MS7 continue to impress? I certainly hope so. I'm far from "all in" at this point, more on the cautiously optimistic side of things!

Very few cupcakes in HEA so far this season. Could be a challenging second half.

Yeah, we're going to find out very soon where we stand. UConn, to me, is a hard one to figure out. They have some solid wins and some stinkers, a lot like UNH. However, UNH has good momentum coming into the weekend, with a seven-game unbeaten streak on the line (eight if you include the USNDT); UConn is more of a .500 team over that same stretch. You hope Friday night being at home should help build that momentum.

UNH has the opportunity to even their record at the Whitt against Yukon, which stands at 7-8-0. Yukon only joined HEA for the 2014/2015 season, about the time that we began our death spiral. Yukon owns seven losing records over its first ten years in the HEA, with winning records only in 2021/22 and 2022/23, and a 0.500 record in 2019/20, all three after MS7 had left his assistant coaching position with the Huskies, which I am sure is merely a coincidence.

More on our all-time record against Yukon compared to nine other HEA teams, by percentage wins not counting ties.

1. UMass-Flagship: 72.2%
2. Mac: 71.8%
3. UVM: 64.8%
4.NU: 60.0%
5. PC: 57.3%
6. UML: 57.3%
7. BC: 45.0%
8. Maine: 43.0%
9. Yukon: 42.3%
10. BU: 30.8%

if we sweep Yukon this weekend, our win percentage jumps to 46.4%, leapfrogging Maine and BC.

Yukon as always been a team that has frustrated me...until last season (and that one game we won during the Covid year plus a couple more when Angus played; I'd have to review the history) we just repeatedly lost to them. I can't tell you how many games at the XL that I went just to see them lose...eventually it only became a trip to look forward to because of their amazing barbeque/cornbread concoction (and a few other concoctions to make it bearable as we lost game after game) Finally we get a tie there, and beat them at home. Last season seeing them win at the Toscano was delicious, even tho, all 5 goals were scored in the opposite end in which I sat. Was going this year but due to the health thing am taking the weekend off (maybe going to Durham).

We can criticize Luce all we want but he's had our number. Would be really nice to turn that corner with them. That said, I predict a split, if I'm being honest...appreciate you taking the time to do these stats btw!

PS...I still remember that game at the 'Whitt when we had a 4 goal lead only to lose to them. Guess who was on that Yukon team? Tage Thompson...who's having a stellar career in the N...I also remember beating them in a first round HE game in 2015 sending us to the Garden for our last trip there...sigh.

UConn's level of success against UNH is a simple function of them joining HEA during an extended down period in UNH Hockey. For that matter, it wasn't all that long ago (deep into the Umile Era) when UNH held the all-time series lead over BC. The UMaine win percentage was lower until we got past the (especially) Walsh and Whitehead Eras, but will now be challenging to keep within its current arm's length while Barr is in town.

I can't see the raw data on UConn, but if a sweep this weekend narrows it that much, there can only be a four game gap UNH has to overcome to square the all-time series at .500. I would classify that one as simply "a matter of time" - basically, not an IF, but almost certainly a WHEN.

But you folks wouldn't expect anything less from me when it comes to my all-time pal Luce ... :p

Yes, four-game gap, Chuck, as we are 11-15-1 all time against Yukon. So even with a sweep this weekend, we would need to wait until next season even if we get the chance to beat the Huskies in the HEA first round (just one game now, right?), kinda like in 2014/2015 noted by HR when we beat the Huskies twice to move on to a best 2 of 3 wins against PC for our last trip to the Garden, maybe just coincidentally MS7’s last season on the coaching staff at Yukon as noted earlier.

And also maybe just coincidental that after winning three titles in five years, BC has not won one since Luce left to take the helm at Yukon in 2013/14, despite a plethora of NHL picks and Hobey candidates most seasons at BC since. I am almost, but not quite, rooting for the Iggles to win it all this year to put an end to Luce’s smugness, which is not a good quality.

Hey all,

First post of the 24/25 season. Gotta say so far so good for UNH. We've set ourselves up nicely. 17th in the poll and 11th in the PWR going into conference play. How does everyone feel? Do we all want MS7 still fired?

I, for one, am enjoying this team. I think they can easily go 4-2 (and hopefully 4-1-1) over the next 6 games. That should put them in striking distance of top 4 in HE. They are playing team defense at a high level and the PK has been amazing. I am still not enamored with whale in goal (has lapses where he gives up soft goals). We are 3 lines deep and Conmy is one of the best I have seen in quite some time. The stage is set for 20 wins and finally getting back to TD (forever optimistic)!!
