UNH 2024/2025 Goldberg Edition

Absolutely. Just as simple as that, Drew. Very cool effort by the team, all involved, and all who contributed.

And extending Norbert's comment, if you personally have been diagnosed and then, hopefully, kicked this cancer, you wouldn't give two 5h1ts how the research funds are raised or who is raising them, as long as it happens.

Finally, I just gotta ask this...why does even this effort lead back to MS7 being the bad guy or the failure? Looks to me like he just let the guys have their moment/fun. It's like there's an MS7DS in here that has grown very old and boring, in my view anyway...

Agreed. Thanks, bakchk20.

Explain what? My last sentence that you bolded explains by point of view. I think that calling out the head coach in a public forum for not participating in a player-organized fund-raising event in which the head coach was already listed as a donor at the time of the post was unseemly. On the other hand, I have no problem calling out the coaching staff for their efforts in recruiting and decisions behind the bench. For example, glad that one of the MacPherson twins got into a game last night, and even better produced.
The "Ditto" echoed your call for an explanation. The "Please explain" was directed at the original poster(s). I agree with you 100%.

Off topic for a hockey thread, but we won two by a combined score of 11 - 2 against an inferior opponent. 'cats be taking care of business!

My father died from cancer and spent his last few days at WDH my freshman year at UNH. I was a commuter student living at home and almost flunked out because of the number of classes I missed when driving my father from Durham to Boston three days a week for chemo treatments. I have given generously to cancer research my entire life. The point of my post was that I did not understand why MS7 was being called out for this particular fund raising cause given that he was listed online as a donor.

I say good on MS7 for donating. At the same time we wanted to see his head shaved. -Mainers

Kudos to Souza for his efforts in planning, hosting and donating for a great event and a good cause. I couldn’t care less that he did not shave his head; shaving one’s head does nothing to combat cancer…

Reminds me of the thousands of athletic teams across the country (at all levels) that want to ‘combat’ breast cancer by getting pink uniforms. I’ve always thought they should wear their regular uniforms and donate the money they spent, but what do I know?

Action beats awareness every time. The original post’s anger led me to believe he was refusing to donate to UNHs own fundraiser. The anger being directed at a lack of head shaving is head scratching…

Further kudos for an offensive outburst!

Coach didn't get his head shaved? That's the complaint? lol

Also I see what you did there :)

Not to cast shade, but my initial comments were driven by a representation that MS7 wasn't contributing to the cause. Assuming that's been shown to be inaccurate, then I retract my original comments, and apologize to MS7 and his family here and now. Further, if this comes down to him not wanting his head to be shaven, I'm 100% with that wish. He's not 18 ferchrisakes. I've been in those shoes before, and made the same decision to forego.

There are countless worthy charities out there for many, many legitimate causes. I prefer to keep my preferred charities to myself, but if I were again to be at the fore of a charity event for a program, I'd lead with my wallet ...

Pretty sure that back in the day Coach Holt wasn't doing keg stands at post game gatherings with Coady, Cox, et al.

The lack of visibility for MS7 is concerning.

For a program looking to raise capital for much needed improvements at The Whitt, the school and the coach, the figurehead of the program, needs to be publicly accessible shaking hands and working the crowds.

Like it or not, the program has faded in hearts and minds of fans throughout the state. Recent history aside, the school has struggled to communicate to season ticket holders and casual fans to drive awareness (and donations). It could be argued that the most passionate fans have been alienated and driven away, much like The Friends were under Scarano.

This needs to change.

It's concerning to hear that fundraising has stalled and the timeline to break ground has been pushed back.

Where is the leadership from the coach, the athletic director and the school at large?

MS7 should be laying the foundation of his (GASP!) next extension now by winning games, upping his recruitment game (though I've heard from multiple sources five OHL transfers have committed), and working the media.

This starts by showing up and acting like the CEO of this team.

He has a lot of work to do.

11 goals from 10 different players, nice. I was most pleased to see the Cats handle an inferior team like an inferior team and not play down to their level. Go Cats.

The way you succeed in college athletics is staying in your lane and keeping the right people happy. Politics over performance. I’m sure it’s been made crystal clear to Souza not to think like a CEO(and the AD could be in a similar position.)

Rats...and I missed it! Now we gotta get ourselves out of the HE basement and that starts this Friday at Matthews Arena!

MS7 has been coach since 2018. His lane has turned into a rut.

He lucked out last season catching lighting in a bottle by snatching Hellsten out of the portal. He will benefit next season from a fortuitous decision by the NCAA overlords giving major junior players eligibility. Is his recruiting strategy nothing more than to play the portal and reel in transfer players with limited options?

As a lifelong fan, I'm tired of excuses, the justifications and the gaslighting and want to see this team to succeed under the leadership of a confident coach who doesn't seem to be under threat of cardiac arrest or stroke every time he appears in public.

So, by your definition of success, UNH wants a bureacrat at the helm of the hockey team, rather than a coach who wins games. If that's the case, our state's flagship program must be one of the most successful in the country.

Sad.

No the complaint is not participating in the head shaving it is on the entire staff to not be there for the event. While the players were all there well past 11 and then did a presentation of the money raised no one was around. The team managers and trainer was there but not a coach with the team. I could care less about the participating, it is not being there with the team.

Hey I do get where you are going with that. I think the coaches being there would be a nice show of support for their players...im so proud of the boys for doing this!

Speaking of head shaving threats and love lost...

Had a flashback to 1973 when you said MS7's wife would divorce him if he shaved his head...I broke up with a bf because he did a dare for 100 bucks to shave his after I had said it would be over (um we were Sophomores in HS for ref). Deal-breaker right there ha!!

Carry on! Hope to see you at a game soon don't think we've connected yet this season.

At the very least, MS7 had the opportunity to work the crowd and stoke some good will with fans and potential donors.

He didn't.

Agreed that we need to beat NU but we will not be able to leapfrog them out of the HEA basement untl mid-January at the earliest as the Huskies are 4 points ahead of us. If we beat the Huskies and the Huskies beat Mack on December 14th, we could tie Mack in the basement with 8 points each. We also could leapfrog UMass-Flagship leaving them in the basement if the Minutemen get fewer than 2 points in their two games against BU on December 7th and 11th. Otherwise, our next opportunity to beat a HEA team does not happen until January 10th against Yukon.

What makes you believe this to be the case right now at UNH, Drew? From all appearances, a major well-publicized facilities upgrade (which has been linked to a well-heeled supporter of MS7 himself) has stalled. This is a 30 year old facility that has only recently begun to see upgrades with the ice plant, and the infamous downsizing of the ice surface from "Lake Whitt" to "Towse Pond". This is not a similar situation to the more general Alfond Foundation funding of various interests at and around the Orono campus, which presumably gets allocated among other projects at the AD or higher level at UMO. In fact, much credence was lent to MS7's role in channeling this specific project to Hockey, on top of what was a decent-but-not-great season on the ice for UNH last season. It would seem counterintuitive for the UNH higher-ups to rein in MS7's activities now, when a year ago the prevailing wisdom was that Key Auto Group/TDL was in the mix largely due to MS7 himself?!? It's not like those funds are otherwise up for grabs to improve Lundholm Gym, the half-built football stadium, or some other housing and/or classroom need(s), and the overall powers-that-be need to officiate where the funds will ultimately land.

Grouch is absolutely correct here. I do wait with baited breath to see what the apparent change of recruiting strategy might be bringing to UNH next season and beyond. Having a five player haul already lined up sounds like it's not something he's been taking lightly, and if done properly, this change of strategy really could build a bridge onto the upgrades of the last two seasons, and extend that well into the rest of this decade.

Do you just continuously eat cans of tuna or sardines?

And with that so will MS7 be extended into the rest of this decade.
