UNH 2020 Off-Season Thread: That Rinky-Shrinky Thang And Other Lively Banter :D

Most importantly, hurrah for hockey! Like with the Red Sox, the ability to grouse about a bad team is a luxury we should all appreciate. That is not to suggest UNH is a bad team, just that for a transitional year, we can look at the pluses without expecting too much.

* I was impressed with the puck movement, as they were easily able to exit the zone, and not just by the Gildon breakout. If they can do that all year they'll be well suited to challenge every game. Was that a function of Maine's weakness? We'll see against the better teams.

* On that point, UNH had little zone time to defend against. Maine never cycled or got the puck pinned down low.

* I'd say offensive skills on D is lacking, so seeing Reid handle the puck with good awareness and puck skills was nice. His lack offensive stats in junior was a question in my mind, but the one game sample was positive. Kalle had that nice rush, but overall the D made smart plays with little need for individual rushes.

* As noted, Crookshank was a step above in generating chances.

* Not a lot of movement on the powerplay, as they had the umbrella but the few cross-ice passes were to Grasso, who is not a shooter.

* For the 3-on-3, I love it. Up and down the ice. You feel great with the 2 on 1 your way, but then it turns right around for the same sort of opportunity. Leaving the zone to regroup is a thing, not just for the Wit.

Serious question: if the game goes into the book as a tie (as it apparently does on both the HEA and USCHO websites), then what exactly is the purpose of the shootout at the end?

Rhetorical question: UMaine looked like a one-line team last night ... so how is it that, after finally taking a lead after 50+ minutes, and UMaine's lone (1) dangerous forward line out on the ice ... UNH allows multiple forwards (I forget which ones?) to get caught deep up ice, well behind the play, allowing the 3-on-2 breakout that resulted in UMaine's game-tying goal???

Lack of situational awareness, with the 'Cats on the ice, AND with their coaches, that's how.

I'll reserve further judgment until after tonight's game, but yeah ... plus ca change, etc.

15 years ago I would have agreed with you, it would have been exciting. I caught the BC-UConn 3 on 3 and it was. But I thought the ME-NH version just exposed the lack of talent on both teams. After the first couple shifts in OT it was like they were playing for the shootout. Now that very well could have been because players on each team didn't want to make a mistake that cost them the game. But I worry that in the bigger picture the guarantee of a point will create more ties, not less. The law of unintended consequences.

Last night showed that UNH is a better skating team than Maine. The Maine team looks to be built for the old Boston Garden, not the Whitt. Also, it looks like Maine has another quality goalie.

Taylor, Engaras, MacKinnon all back in the line-up. Gendron and Nagle make their debuts. Stevenson, Cafarelli, Cippolone and Reid out of the line-up...

Both should have been majors. Reid’s was arguably the dirtier play of the two.

I don’t think Reid’s was even that bad. The guy turned and actually lowered. It was definitely less egregious than the hit from behind in the first. A side hit is never as bad as hitting the numbers.

Geeze. Caught up ice, now a stupid penalty. Need better play from a second line D.

At least this season we can simply enjoy mistakes without having to deal with the frustration of anyone making a mistake also subjecting us to team-leading point totals and a competent, top-20 power play. It certainly made things much simpler not having to worry about the defenseman caught deep on last night's Maine's goal also lifting the PP to better than 0-for-7 and actually winning the game...

Happy to jinx myself in the short-term - would still bet significant money its a real eye opener about what has been lost over the long term. Certainly against non-Maine opponents. They look awful through four periods...

3-1 UNH after two broken plays on the PP and an EA goal.
