UND @ Michigan Tech: Houghton hears the Whioux

Re: UND @ Michigan Tech: Houghton hears the Whioux

How haven't I been to those places yet?!

Sadly, I've never been to huskyfan's beloved Randy's - on my list for next summer. Service at the Michigan House can be a little pokey and the interior is sort of "Cracker Barrel meets Yooper Grandma's House", but they make very tasty/generous burgers, homemade potato chips, and brew a couple decent beers. I almost always stop in for a Black n' Bleu burger and a pint of Oatmeal Espresso Stout when I'm up there.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Also, what is the parking situation around the arena?

There is a big arse lot, they do charge after a certain time, but it's cheap.

Tailgating has been allowed, for our group at least, but I think the official stance is no booze. Just use red Solo Cups and be discreet. AND CLEAN UP AFTERWARDS. Then you're fine.

This made me laugh. :D

The official stance (as it is at basically every other university in America) is no booze on school property. But if you're tailgating in the main lot, as long as you aren't destroying property and causing a scene, they don't really care.

That's alright. Sounds like a flask of Stoli and lemon night...:)

School property is the key. Engelstad isn't school property, IIRC. That sort of thing. :)

And yeah, we've had security commend us on drinking our soda in the little red cups. Winkwinksaynomore. :D

ha! love the description of Michigan House. its dead on. but the beer is good and those chips ... Randys is an old time Yooper Bar, nothing special really, but they have free popcorn and one entire wall is old time Copper Country hockey pictures. beer is cheap and the Moscow Mules are in copper mugs, as it should be.

While in the UP you should take in the worlds largest chain saw and the mystery spot. Both well worth the trips to see them.Course since there are no trees in North Dakota you might not be familiar with chain saws.

Re: UND @ Michigan Tech: Houghton hears the Whioux

Only a Yooper hick would think a giant chain saw is worth seeing. That is the most pathetic suggestion I have ever seen on this board. Do you get a season pass for this so called attraction? And a mystery spot? Seriously? I take it back, that is the most pathetic suggestion I have seen on this board. The UP is just overflowing with patheticness, isn't it? With these terrible suggestions it's easy to see why Houghton is such a sh^thole and Tech is horrible at everything.

If Houghton is a sh^thole then what is Fargo?

What exactly is a Moscow Mule? Drinks in copper mugs? I need to try both these places.
Because you don't bend the brims of your caps.
Can you belive I actually went into the Gay Bar with a hat brim unflattened? :o

Re: UND @ Michigan Tech: Houghton hears the Whioux

Yeah, I'll take that bet

Is that really the full extent of your very first post, "guy who combines two horrible things into one super-horrible user name guy"? You could at least throw your own worthless prediction out here.

Re: UND @ Michigan Tech: Houghton hears the Whioux

Thanks for the info. I did pay some attention to the UM/MTU thread a few weeks ago and I'm thinking we'll hit the Gay Bar(cue the Blue Oyster Bar music:D) then maybe head North to Copper Harbor. Any cool places/bars up there? What about The Ambassador?

Not sure it'd be worth the trek (it's a haul from Houghton) at this time of year although the locals would know better. I guess there'd be x-country skiing, there's a downhill place by Lac La Belle, but beyond that, not worth the 2 hour drive, imho.

Is really cool in the summer/fall though - my family's favorite area of the U.P. (the upper Keweenaw) by far and we've been everywhere. Well worth the trip in the summer for the diverse beaches, golf at the mountain lodge, etc, etc, etc.

EDIT: Great thread title, btw.

It's still a nice drive, especially if you stick to the routes by the lake and avoid taking US-41 up the center, that will be a bit gray and dreary before the snow is deep. The ice on shore can be pretty cool in places.

Also note, it's a 2 hour round trip, not one way if you are planning to do it.

Oh, and dirty is full of ****. Pasties are delicious. Nisu bread = amazing. Suomi's really is the place to go for breakfast. Delicious small town style place. If you drink beer and don't go to the KBC you are really missing out. A trip to the Dee just see where pro hockey started is worth it for any hockey fan.

Parking is still 5 bucks I believe (not sure as I park in the Huskies club lot when I'm home and that is free) and is right next to the building. There really isn't a bad seat in the arena as it's purpose built for hockey. It is no Ralph however. Nachos are good, but really the arena food that should not be skipped is the ice cream. Mackinaw Island Fudge is AMAZING and can't be found outside of the U.P. (At least not that I've found.

Listen at 2:15.

Rane should watch this movie before going.

a Moscow Mule is vodka (who would have guessed huskyfan likes vodka?), ginger beer and lime. served over ice which makes the copper mug "sweat". a great summertime cooler, but really a good drink anytime. if you like ginger beer.
