UND at UW: Let's get hostile, let's get abusive

Re: UND at UW: Let's get hostile, let's get abusive

This is the point I think many miss. Just because the player on the receiving end of a dangerous hit was able to keep playing doesn't mean that the hit wasn't dangerous and shouldn't be penalized. If the intent of the NCAA is to remove dangerous hits from the game, then they have to be penalized whenever they happen, regardless of whether an injury resulted. It's the only way coaches are going to start teaching players to avoid delivering such hits and the only way players are going to learn to recognize situations in which they need to pull up.

It shouldn't take players ending up in wheel chairs or with career-ending or season-ending injuries for everyone to understand that the game can still be physical and entertaining without the type of hits that jeopardize players' safety.

Wow. Another well spoken, reasonable Sioux fan. You're starting to ruin my perception of you guys. :)

Well said.

Re: UND at UW: Let's get hostile, let's get abusive

First off, watch out coz Dolan has his spell check enabled and he's looking for stuff like this.

Secondly, I thought it was pretty smart of the little PUBIC hair to have a razor concealed in his glove so he could cut himself to make it look even WORSE. Hollywood Earle never took it to those levels. So show a little respect will ya?

"coz"??? I don't approve the use of that abbreviation. :p

You guys sure seem to like that word. Expand your vocabulary, you Mongoloid. :p

:D :D

Re: UND at UW: Let's get hostile, let's get abusive

I thought Hakstol's post game radio interview with Tim last night was interesting, and contrary to some of the thoughts espoused here. Tim was obviously upset with some of the calls or non-calls last night and was trying to get Hakstol to bite. Hak was asked about the officiating. I'm paraphrasing here, but his response was, the officials are not against us. They don't pick on us. There is no conspiracy. They just come to the rink and do their job. He has been stressing to the team that they can't get frustrated in the face of adversity that comes with a call that goes against you. Just meet the challenge and move on.

Then he was asked specifically about the 5 min majors. His first response was that his team needs to do a better job of recognizing those situations in which a hit is going to result in a major penalty and avoid them (i.e., don't check someone from behind into the boards or hit someone in the head.) Then he added this comment. He said that the officials have a very tough job. They see a hard hit, they see a player down on the ice with a serious injury, or what appears to be a serious injury, and they have no choice but to call that penalty, and the team needs to avoid getting into those situations.

Then he finished by saying that we will get killed tonight if we make similar mistakes. That he expects a much better performance from Wisconsin and repeated trips to the box or major penalties will make it very difficult to get any Saturday night momentum.

I think his comments were spot on. I will have no problem with a league suspension on the Hextall hit, although I don't think a similar suspension will come to Gleason.

I am also tired of complaints about officiating, from all parties.

Hak is right, and it's good he's sending this message. This situation is a little like the home plate ump consistently calling strikes that are 2 inchies outside the black. If you're the hitter, are you going to keep taking those pitches so you can walk back to the dugout complaining about the bad call or are you going to adjust and try to get on base somehow?
I'm not trying to say those two majors should not have been called. The point is that the Sioux have to adjust if they want to play more even-strength hockey. I think we all appreciate the body-on-body violence in hockey--it's part of what the game is about. But I think they can keep that and still stay out of the box more than they have.

Good, tight defense and goaltending by both sides last night. It'd be nice to see the red light a little tonight, though. 11-1 Sioux would be adequate.

Re: UND at UW: Let's get hostile, let's get abusive

The first hit didn't look as bad as me as the second. It happend far enough away from the boards imho to not receive the same scrutiny as a player lifting his elbow on a check to the head. That said I wouldn't aver there was an intent to injure but rather a failure to keep the arm down and the shoulder do the work for him. Might have still been a penalty for head contact but it wouldn't be viewed as negatively.

Re: UND at UW: Let's get hostile, let's get abusive

Seriously, if people think the Hak coaches players to play dirty, you are effing retarded. The Sioux play a physical game... they have always played a physical game, even under Blais. Points of emphasis have changed over the past 10 years as we've learned more and more about the effects of concussions and as players have become bigger and faster... bodies aren't meant to go that fast and collide at those levels.

The Sioux will have to adapt or it will burn them down the road... it's something we say every year, and in the end the team has often been hurt by taking too many penalties in the playoffs.

The fact is, many players go to North Dakota because they play a physical, pro-style game that gets them ready for the next level. These are big, fast, physical players. The coaches obviously coach to these strengths. Saying that a coaching system includes dirty play and intent to injure is flat out ignorance and you either don't know $hit about hockey or you have never played any organized sports.

I"m saying knocking players out of the game didn't occur w/Blais coached teams. they played tough, sure, but I don't ever remember them crossing the line into the garbage they pull now.

watch that Brendan Smith video, then watch martin, murray...see a pattern there w/Hakstols guys?

Re: UND at UW: Let's get hostile, let's get abusive

I say the Badgers relized what was wrong with last night and come out firing. Possibly getting 4 or 5 goals.

I think you're suffering from selective memory.

Maybe Hextall should write an apology letter to solovsfett along with five coupons for a free hug.

Gurtholfin, how can I not use the word "retarded" when there are comments like this?

Guys get knocked out of games no matter what teams are playing. I personally go to about 25-30 games a year... roughly 10 at the Mooch, half dozen at the NHC, couple at the Ralph and at other arenas, holiday tourneys, Final Five, regionals... I see a lot of games with teams I have no ties to... the Sioux play no dirtier than any of those teams. Often times they play a more physical game, but not always, and I'm not saying they haven't had some dirty players (as do other teams), but that's different than promoting a "play dirty" philosophy.

That said, Sioux players have to adhere to the changing rules both to promote safer play and to be more competitive (i.e. not on the penalty kill), and they are not doing a good job of making those changes.

Re: UND at UW: Let's get hostile, let's get abusive

let's face it. The Sioux are evil demons and deserve to be crucified upside down.

Alongside siouxinminny, happy, and VarsityWisconsin :D

I haven't and won't namecall sioux posters. we see this differently and that's fine. that's why freedom of speech is such a great thing right?

I will not back off my comments. you watch 25-30 games a year. great. I have season tickets for UW, watch numerous other games on tv, and catch live Hawks games. and all this for 25+ years now. you know how certain teams develop styles and systems.

right now the sioux are playing to haktol's style which is to get as close to that line as possible. then some players invariably cross it. you want to condone that fine. I don't. And I for one will be watching very closely your reaction when a WCHA player runs a sioux through the boards on a "clean" hit where "there was no elbow or shoulder" and certainly no "intent" and that sioux player doesn't come back that night or season. leave out aaron marvin from scsu that was the ultimate dirty bertuzzi type hit. I'm talking about a head-down smash to the sioux players head or a cfb or boarding where you seem to want to accuse the victim for the "incident"

there are some 58 D-I teams. I'd like to see a count of who takes the most 5-min majors. then a count of what teams have knocked (how many) opposing players out of the game or out for the season.

my guess is nodak would be #1 in that last category by a wide margin going over the last 7-8 years or however long hakstol has coached there. the evidence is in and I think many wcha fans will agree.

and further about guys getting knocked out of games. in 25 years as a season ticket holder I don't recall more than maybe a dozen guys getting knocked out of games at the Dane or Kohl for UW. T.R. Moreau, Craig Anderson, Jordy Murray, ....I'm not recalling immediately some of the others, it's significant when it happens because it has been rare (thank god).

in this instance w/nodak under hakstol it's becoming a trend as you see more and more players getting injured playing siouxie. sioux fans may not like that accusation, but I'll stand by it as the evidence is in and out there for you to either read or WATCH

that would be sweet. I'll frame the letter and then I'll take the hugs if they're from say christina hendricks;)

Re: UND at UW: Let's get hostile, let's get abusive

according to No Ablibis No Regrets blog Jordy Murray is out tonight.

***? there is absolutely no news out there on the extent of the injury

Did you find evidence of your brash statements while writing your post? I'm interested because by the end of the post you seem to have solid evidence. You just blurting it out doesn't make it true.

Glad to see Baggot on top of it this weekend.

Edit: I don't think it's too serious. Sean Dolan tweeted this afternoon "Jordy is feeling better today has some nice zips in his chin... Can't wait for the game tonight"
