UML Road trip to Denver.

Re: UML Road trip to Denver.

Up to Fort Collins. :)

You got me good on that one!

I've been to Denver a few of times over the years and my girlfriend has repeatedly told me that Fort Collins is north of Denver. I guess that simple geography never stuck in my brain.

I'm looking forward to the road trip as going to Maine or UVM doesn't really constitute a real road trip in my book.

Re: UML Road trip to Denver.

You guys have any "superstar" Freshman coming in? Two of our incomings just won the USHL Championship. I would think atleast one of them will be on a line for the UML night. You coming in early to see Obama & Romney duke it out at DU? :D

Don't think we have another Zucker, LaLeggia, Bozak or #1 picks like Colborne or Bennett. This class seems to extend the DU Hockey Family.

2012 Recruiting Class
F Tyler Pham (Indiana Ice, USHL)from Colorado 1st to commit in this class
D Dakota Mermis (Green Bay, USHL) brother Jared will be a junior this year--won USHL Championship
D Matt Van Voorhis (Sioux Falls, USHL)
F Garrett Allen (Des Moines, USHL)
D Nolan Zajac (Omaha, USHL) father Tom played at DU--black sheep (UND) brother currently going for the Stanley Cup
F Quentin Shore (U.S. Under-18) Shore to Shore to Shore Drew was DU Co-Captain last year, brother Nick is an alternate Captain this coming season and Q will be #3 at DU
F Grant Arnold (Green Bay, USHL) Colorado native, Green Bay Co-Captain, won USHL championship.

BTW Green Bay Coach Derek LaLonde was an assistant at DU.

A few things you guys might be interested in that are on or near what they call "The Mall," which is a main stretch of establishments in downtown Denver:

El Chapultepec. Great jazz bar (cash only, so be forewarned). Total dive, I think max capacity is 49 people. http://www.esquire.com/bestbars/bb-ElChapultepec_

Sam's No 3. Great breakfast place. Solid portions, too. http://samsno3.com/

Pat's Pub. It's a bar that caters to Philadelphia sports fans. Why is this a recommendation? Honest to goodness Philly Cheesesteaks, complete with Cheez Whiz. Note: only this location of the Pat's Pubs in Denver has the Whiz.

Appaloosa Grill. Great food (you can get a buffalo burger there that is very tasty, for example).

Wynkoop Brewery. This is a little bit of a hike from The Mall, but not bad at all. http://www.wynkoop.com/

Falling Rock Taphouse. You want beer? They have it. Lots of it. 75+ on tap, 130+ in bottles. http://fallingrocktaphouse.com/

That I couldn't tell you. I don't really know how far away the arena is from downtown Denver. I've mostly been there for vacations and such.

I am staying at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Denver Cherry Creek. It is on S. Colorado, it is very close to the DU campus. I would guess about a mile away. If u r a AAA member it is only 99 a night.

Re: UML Road trip to Denver.

Help me out here. I think i have heard of this Ft. Collins thing. Is it the little suburb jammed between Bellvue, Timnath, and New Belgium?
New Belgium is where they make the beer, right? Fat Tire and a bunch of others? That right there would be worth the trip. :)

Re: UML Road trip to Denver.

If you're coming here, you MUST eat at Casa Bonita

This. So much this.

And New Belgium is brewed in Fort Collins. Fun tour and you not only learn a lot about the process, you learn a ton about the company/how the workplace is (our guide mentioned that they play boot hockey in the parking lot sometimes during lunch :D ). Don't bother with the Coors tour.

And yes, there are a LOT of breweries in CO.

Re: UML Road trip to Denver.

And if you really want to tour a big brewery where they make gross beer, then while in Fort Collins to check out New Belgium, or any of the several pretty solid breweries in the area, you can always hit up the Budweiser brewery.

My take on food in Denver is that there is a lot of good food, but very few places that are "typical" or that you "have to" go to. Casa Bonita is pretty fun, especially if you have kids, or if you don't and want to get plastered while playing skee-ball, but know that the only good food there (in my experience) is the sopapillas. You don't go there for the food, you go for the experience.

There's a place right on campus where you can get pretty respectable middle eastern food (Jerusalem), if for whatever reason you're specifically a fan of Chipotle, you can go to the first one, which is also right on campus. And which is almost ridiculously small, and featured in a photo in (I think) every Chipotle store (every one I've ever been in, anyway).

My recommendation would be to get here, find some interesting looking places, and check them out. You might find gold.

Re: UML Road trip to Denver.

Thanks for the advice folks, really appreciated. My trips to Denver (which I think I've made one every year for past 10, maybe missing one year in between) always wind up with me parked at the Falling Rock. Pretty much for the entire trip, each time, except when I head to the sporting event itself (UML @ Denver, Revs @ Colorado, Pats @ Broncos). :D

Casa Bonita is my favorite place in the whole world, I'll just die if you don't take me.
