Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

According to the Heisenberg site, Stenglein is heading to Michigan State
I have three responses to this reply.

1. luckily it wasn't a Hockey East school
2. doesn't michigan state come to lowell in two years? that should be interesting.
3. wish he was still coming here

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Early NLI signing period starts today.

Depending on who's actually getting scholarship money, Shea, Shapiro and Scammon can all sign today. Maybe Campbell, if Lowell decides to bring him in next season.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

MSU is not a program headed in the right direction. They have a non-coach as their coach. He'll regret his decision.
Unfortunately for Lowell, I think we'll regret his decision as well. He had been a high end recruit for Lowell (IMHO). Will have to see if anyone else that is currently committed (next year or after) falls into that grouping. The goal numbers he put up in the USHL as a youngster were something Lowell could use.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Of course it's a loss for UML, too. Didn't want to come in and add salt to the wound. One thing I will say, and I think Bazin will realize it, is to win at places like Lowell, Maine, Merrimack, NMU, Duluth, Lake Superior, St. Lawrence, etc, you have to find the hidden gems, the guys that were overlooked. Yes, each of those programs will pick up a stud, but check how the D2 schools have won titles for the most part, overlooked, older Canadian players.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

For example, I have Merrimack's media guide in front of me, and the two schools are similar in terms of how they are looked upon by the top notch younger recruits, whether each school's fans would like to admit or not. Rejean Stringer, Kris Porter, Darrel Scoville, Casey Kesselring, Martin Laroche, Chris Barton, Sandy Cohen, Rob Beck, Anthony Aquino...those are the 100 point scorers since 1995...One thing in common, all Canadians, all overagers, except for Aquino. Greg Bullock, Christian Sbrocca, Jeff Daw, Ed McGrane, Chris Bell, the french Guys, Ben Walter, etc...I'm too lazy to look up more, I know you had a few good local guys, more so than Merrimack, but you get my point. Almost all local kids, given the chance, would play for BU, BC or UNH. It's just that simple

Mike McMahon ‏@MikeMcMahonCHN
'94 Michael Kapla. a defenseman from Sioux City (USHL) has committed to Lowell. 1-0--1 in 11GP this yr.

He's from Eau Claire, WI. Played in just three games for Sioux City last year (no points). Born 9/19/94, he's 5'11, 194 pounds. First USHL recruit on the future list. He's listed as coming in 2014.
Kapla was a Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association first-team all-state performer in his sophomore and junior seasons

He'll be a 2014. He played three games in USHL last year after his high school season was over. Known as a puck moving, smooth skating dman.

Thanks. BTW, you prob know this at this point, but your twitter was hacked yesterday...

More on Kapla, taken from a Wisco blog prior to 2012 classes being finalized (Nov '23, 11), under potential Badger recruits:
Michael Kapla (Eau Claire Memorial High School): I've gotten to scout Kapla on a number of occasions and really like the way he plays the game. The Wisconsin native moves the puck well and is built like a rock. Kapla is a junior and is likely to end up as a 2014 recruit but if he plays next season in the USHL with Sioux City who owns his rights I wouldn't be shocked if someone jumped on him for 2013.
And a local article about him being named the local-area player of the year after his junior season.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

In September, USHR named Kapla as the #6 top uncommitted USHL player...
6. Michael Kapla, D, 9/19/94 (Sioux City) 6-1/195 — Has an exceptional stick and a great mind for the game. Not many d-men in this league process the game as quickly as the Eau Claire, Wisconsin native. Looked excellent running the Musketeers top PP unit. Last season he played for the Eau Claire Memorial HS – ‘the Old Abes’ -- and posted a 4-34-38 scoring line in just 21 games played. His skating is not very good, but his hands and his ability to get the puck up ice more than make up for it.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Thanks to boblav1 for this.

From USHR:
The University of Massachusetts-Lowell has received a commitment from 5’11”, 195 lb. Sioux City (USHL) defenseman Michael Kapla for the fall of 2014.
We view this as a significant acquisition for the Riverhawks and feel that the Eau Claire, Wisconsin native could quarterback their PP for the full four years. After watching the 9/19/94 birthdate at the USHL Fall Classic we ranked him #6 on our “USHL’s Top Uncommitted Players” list and had this to say about him, “Has an exceptional stick and a great mind for the game. Last season he played for Eau Claire (Wisc.) Memorial HS - ‘the Old Abes' -- and posted a 4-34-38 scoring line in just 21 games played. His skating is not very good, but his hands and PP skills more than compensate.”
Through 11 games played this season the puck moving defender has only posted a 1-0-1 scoring line. Making the jump from Wisconsin high school hockey to the USHL is a difficult transition and one that takes some getting used to. Once Kapla gets a feel for the pace we expect his numbers to increase. A good comparison for U-Lowell fans would be former UNH All-American Brian Yandle.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Haven't done this in a while, but since I'm bored till leaving for the game....

Recruits stats for last night, only two played, Corey Scammon had an assist, while Tyler Mueller had a 1-1-2 in Cowichan's 6-2 win in the BCHL.

Michael Kapla (Sioux City, USHL) was a DNP.

BTW, ex-UML commit J.T. Stenglein (6-5-11 in 12 games) was traded to Sioux City apparently, from Youngstown. Sioux City has the worst record in the USHL.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Rumors flying around our USHL board is that Stenglein's head got too big for the Youngstown Lockerroom and he was being shopped since he got back from the WJAC

Thanks for that, I thought there had to be a reason for them to ship him out.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Evan Campbell finished with a 1-1-2 and was the 2nd Star in Langley's 7-3 loss last night in the BCHL.

Evan Anderson didn't play.
