UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

UML recruit Connor Hellebuyck was named to the 2011-12 All-NAHL Team. Connor was also voted the NAHL Goaltender and Rookie of the Year along with UConn recruit Robert Nichols.
The NAHL had the rarest of situations this season as both Connor Hellebuyck and Robert Nichols received the same number of votes for both the Rookie of Year award and the Brian's Goaltender of the Year awards, therefore both were honored.

Hey Monty
I have been meaning to say your interview on Fox25 about Junior passing away was excellent. You have a future in broadcasting.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Logan Johnston had a goal in Penticton's 3-0 win in the semifinals of the RBC Cup.

The final is being played currently and is tied at 2, in the second period.

Edit to add: Penticton is the best Junior A team in Canada, as they won tonight 4-3. Logan Johnston assisted on the game winning goal.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Lowell has picked up a new commitment for 12/13, Alec White, a 6'2" forward from the Michigan Warriors (NAHL). Thanks to boblav1 for finding this for me. The site has been updated to add him.

So, with his addition, and the departure of Conderman (and speculating the departures of Boulanger and Mihailovich, here's where the UML roster stands as of today for next season, based on the assumption that all the players that could come in either 2012 or 2013 will come in 2013:

Defense (10):
Senior: Malcolm Lyles
Juniors: Daniel Furlong, Joe Houk (RS), Chad Ruhwedel
Sophomores: William Eiserman, Zach Kamrass, Jake Suter
Freshmen: Greg Amlong, Christian Folin, Dmitri Sinitsyn (RS)

Forwards (18):
Seniors: Riley Wetmore, Colin Wright
Juniors: Derek Arnold, Josh Holmstrom, Derek McCoy, Joe Pendanza, Shayne Thompson
Sophomores: Tyler Brickler, Stephen Buco, Terrence Wallin, Scott Wilson
Freshmen: Adam Chapie, Mike Colantone, Michael Fallon, Logan Johston, Ryan McGrath, Dylan Shapiro, Alec White

Goalies (3):
Juniors: Doug Carr
Sophomores: Brian Robbins
Freshman: Connor Hellebuyck

So at this point, that leaves us at 31 on the roster. That's still a large number.

Assuming no one leaves, the class breakdown for 2012 then would be:
Seniors: 3
Juniors: 9
Sophomores: 8
Freshmen: 11

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Have also heard Brickler will be transferring to a D-3 school next year as well. That cuts the roster to 30 which would still be the largest number in Hockey East.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Final stats for UML recruits for their respective 2011/2012 seasons. One thing that's definitely noticeable, other than McGrath, every player is 6' or taller. Think that was something that Coach Bazin definitely wanted to change.

I'm listing Scammon and Stenglein as 2013, but they could enter school in 2012.

*Hellebuyck finished second in the NAHL in save percentage, and had the most saves of any other netminder in the league.
*Colantone finished 11th in goals and 14th in points in the BCHL.

Don't have access to stats for Shea.

And I've only used the league playoff stats, not the RBC Cup (for example).

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

One thing that I knew Leaman could do was recruit, and he's pulled off another good get for PC ...

Andrew Weiss‏@WeissFC

Jon Gillies has announced today he will be playing at Providence College next season

Nathan Fournier‏@jrhockeywriter

bREAKING NEW: Jon Gillies has committed to Providence College
Not sure what the plans are at this point, but PC will have a senior (Stein), a sophomore (Laplante) and two freshmen next year (Wells and Gillies) and they have a commit for 2013 as well. Interesting.

Dylan Shapiro was selected in the 7th round of the USHL Draft today, by the Indian Ice (104th overall).

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Bringing this into the recruiting thread...

Love reading about the classes finally being evened out. It's only been a decade.

As a recruit-nic ... one thing I took from this article was this comment
There's also one more highly-regarded recruit Bazin may or may not decide to bring in this fall as a scholarship player.
The only kids not named in the article were Shapiro and Stenglein. Stenglein had a very good year as an 18 year old in the USHL, so I'm assuming he's the one that's being referred to. Shapiro's been drafted into the USHL, so I'm thinking he might head there.

Which (at this point) means that Shapiro, Stenglein, Shea and Scammon (look at all those S names!) could be coming in next year. Bazin said he wants 6-7 next year, so that means we can expect another 2/3 more recruits for next year.

BTW, it's disappointing that the school site doesn't have a release about the incoming players.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Small piece of news...
Brian Wiebe ‏@Brian_Wiebe
@CVCaps add D Corey Scammon (93) to their 12-13 roster. Had 24 pts in 30 gms w/ Cushing Academy (#USHS) in 11-12. #BCHL @bchllive
So now we know where Scammon will be next season, the Cowichan Capitals of the BCHL. Still nothing on Casey Shea.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

boblav1 found a blurb about J.T. Stenglein, which has to excite you for his arriving on campus next year.
-- Winger JT Stenglein set a franchise record with 31 goals last season. The 6-foot, 200-pounder is the definition of a power forward and was a man among boys at the Ice Zone. He was able to out-muscle virtually anyone for the puck and showed a willingness to drive to the net, battle in the crease and work the corners that was at times lacking in his game in 2011-2012. He scored a pair of goals Monday, most notably his second, where he powered through the defense on a 1-on-2 and fired a low wrist shot just inside the near post. Mind you, this is a player that finished fifth in the entire league in goals last season, while playing on the Phantoms’ “second” line. Forty goals hardly seems a stretch if he can remain healthy, but he’ll be on every team’s radar.
