As promised:

Sorry if this was covered earlier in the thread but what happened to the huge Russian kid who joined the team mid season? Carr said he had the hardest shot on the team and that was with a borrowed stick the kid said was whimpy? Did he even play? Is he coming back? Thanks.

Sinitsyn is still on the team, they apparently decided not to waste a year of eligibility on half a season.

What Patronick said. And remember, he's really young.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

UML recruit Casey Shea will be playing in the MSHCA All-Star game on April 1st in Worcester. UML target Kevin Emmerling (St. John's) will also be playing. A little about the game here.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Hellebuyck named one of the NAHL 3 Stars of the Week, for the second straight week.

2nd Star: Connor Hellebuyck, goaltender, Odessa Jackalopes
As good as he was last week in earning the league’s #3 star, Odessa goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, 18, was even better this week in helping Odessa maintain the 4th and final playoff spot in the South Division heading into the final regular season weekend. The Commerce, Michigan native stopped a combined 61 of 62 shots, with the one goal he gave up coming in a 1-0 loss at South Division Champion Amarillo on Saturday. On Wednesday, Hellebuyck, a UMASS-Lowell recruit stopped all 24 shots in a 2-0 road shutout in Wichita Falls. In Saturday’s 1-0 loss in Amarillo, Hellebuyck made 37 saves. Hellebuyck is currently second in the NAHL in save percentage at 93.1%. “I think Connor is playing his best hockey of the season right now and he has worked hard to get to where he is,” said Jackalopes head coach Paul Gillis. “We are in a position to make the playoffs thanks in part to solid goaltending and that is something we can rely on game in and game out with the consistency Connor is playing with right now.”

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Should I be disappointed that Penn State just picked up their second blue-chip recruit (1 each coming in 2014/2015) ... and we have none? :o

Also, Bentley just picked up a kid named Bacon. This just writes it's own jokes. :D

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Tyler Drevitch of the Empire Bridgewater Bandits is offered by Yale but wants to go to UML.

Interesting ... he's a '95, but a scrawny kid (145 pounds).

Do you know if Lowell has shown interest?

Still haven't heard anything recently about Emmerling's situation either. Emmerling was 2nd Team All-State according to ESPN Boston. The most recent article about him say that Maine and Sacred Heart are involved, doesn't list UML anymore.

Not thoroughly surpising after their 40+ game winning streak, but Penticton is in the BCHL Finals, and took a 2-0 lead over the weekend on Powell River. UML commit Logan Johnston had a goal in Game 1 (a 3-1 win) but was held pointless in Game 2 (2-1 win).

The USHL is in their last week of regular season play, and all UML recruits except Michael Fallon (Chicago) will be in the playoffs. Youngstown's J.T. Stenglein had a 1-1-2 in two games over the weekend as his team went .500. His goal was his 31st of the season, a very good number for the 18-year old.

Ryan McGrath had a goal for Cedar Rapids, as the Rough Riders won their only game on the weekend. He has four goals in the last four games. Greg Amlong didn't play this past weekend for Cedar Rapids.

The playoffs have started in the NAHL, and two of the three Lowell commits continue playing. Connor Hellebuyck's Odessa squad lost Game 1, but followed through with a huge Game 2 win on the road. Hellebuyck made 47 saves on 52 shots in the 5-2 Game 1 loss, but followed up with 49 saves on 50 shots and the #1 star in Game 2.

Not sure why, but Christian Folin didn't play for Austin this weekend, as the Bruins won Game 1 on the road, then lost Game 2.

It's good to see they stress team defense in the NAHL...

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

The other UMass just picked up two commitments for 2013 yesterday, a good day for them.

A look at the NHL Central Scouting Rankings from a Hockey East commitments perspective.

Lowell has Sinitsyn as the only player on the list, as a "limited viewing."

But BU has a whopping 9 players committed for the next two years on that list, Maine has 5, while BC has 4, PC and Northeastern have 2 each, and Merrimack and Vermont have 1 each (of course, UVM's player is the highest ranked of any of the commits).

So in regards to actually being ranked, Lowell, UMass and UNH (surpisingly) have none.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Logan Johnston had an assist in Game 4 as the Penticton Vees swept to win the BCHL Championship. The Doyle Cup, which will pit the Vees versus the winner of the AJHL will start up on April 20th.

In the NAHL, Connor Hellebuyck's season is over as Odessa lost their series 3-1. He played in all four games, made an amazing 61 saves (in regulation) in a 4-3 loss in Game 3 and followed up with 42 shots in a 4-1 loss in Game 4. His GAA in the playoffs was a paltry 3.46, but his save percentage was an impressive 93.4.

The NAHL - where defense reigns supreme.....

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Here is an unbias opinion about Lyles from some of the limited exposure he had at BC a year ago...

He was very quick on his skates but often appeared out of position and undisciplined with respect to his gap, and proximity to his partner. Those regularly displayed characteristics made it very difficult for BC staff to count on or depend on him in game action. He had multiple opportunities to earn a regular spot in the line-up with prolonged injuries to Wey and Cross. High energy guy that likes to join the rush a lot even when it might not be in the best interest of the team. I personally had questions about hockey IQ because of the "all over the ice" mentality. Ultimately, for Malcolm the writing was on the wall as Wey never returned last year but Malcolm got supplanted by Alber who was much more dependable and consistent in his own end.

Great to hear that Malcolm will be back in Hockey East in 2011-2012 with two years left in eligibility. He will have to earn his ice time but seems better suited to garner top 6 defensive minutes at UML based on being older and hopefully wiser from a performance perspective.

A season has come and gone for UML and a great one it was! Your new coach and his players have taken the program to new heights. Your fan base has to be extremely excited about the future and what it could bring with the momentum gained from such tremendous year on the ice.

I am just curious from UML fans how accurate or inaccurate I was with my assessment of Malcolm. Looks like he played in almost all games (30) and put up numbers reflective of his role on the team. Is he returning or will he be signing an NHL ELC. I remember lots of discussion back in January about where he might play in top pairing and how he would be one of the best in hockey east. I viewed him as a solid addition with potential to play in 5,6 role.

Not really looking to start another BC vs Hokydad discussion ...

But I'll answer your question. As I (and a couple of others) had said, we would judge him based on what we saw, not what we were told. At times, he was solid. He's definitely got a little bit of bite in him, and he's a fast skater. But he gave away the puck too often at times. I'm not sure what the coaching staff expected from him (or the frosh coming in), but I think he got passed pretty easily by Kamrass and Suter during the year, and Ruhwedel and Furlong were consistently better than him. All those guys are coming back, as are a few others (and a couple more recruits). This squad currently has over 30 players expected (if everyone returns), so I'm not sure what the plan is on Lyles.
