UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Not really looking to start another BC vs Hokydad discussion ...

But I'll answer your question. As I (and a couple of others) had said, we would judge him based on what we saw, not what we were told. At times, he was solid. He's definitely got a little bit of bite in him, and he's a fast skater. But he gave away the puck too often at times. I'm not sure what the coaching staff expected from him (or the frosh coming in), but I think he got passed pretty easily by Kamrass and Suter during the year, and Ruhwedel and Furlong were consistently better than him. All those guys are coming back, as are a few others (and a couple more recruits). This squad currently has over 30 players expected (if everyone returns), so I'm not sure what the plan is on Lyles.

Thanks UML for the feedback, as I too have no interest in firing up that whole mess. I got to see Malcolm only a few times this past season and then saw him play sparingly against Union. Just genuinely interested in how it worked out for a great kid who I believe was way over hyped coming in. I would have loved to have been proven wrong for his sake but I did just not believe success in BCHL translating to the UML Division I ice much less the NHL arena. Remember also that BC took a lot of hits from a coaching perspective around "not fully developing" Malcolm. Reality, like your new and excellent coach, York's staff knows what they are doing in developing young talent defensively in my opinion...Dumoulin, Cross, Wey, Alber, MacLoed are just a few.

Continued success going forward in getting better and better. I see great things on the horizon for the UML hockey program and it's fan base!

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Honestly, the more BC fans that are disinterested in the baiting and chest beating nonsense the better... Your input is appreciated.

Your comments of last year seem apt... But the behavior seems muted. Granted, I only saw a fraction of the games.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Amherst just picked up their third commitment for 2013 in one week. Grr....

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

USHL regular season ended over the weekend, and J.T. Stenglein finished tied for 16th in points with a 31-20-51, while Michael Fallon finished with a 19-29-48, good for a tie for 22nd.

Stenglein's Youngstown squad will be facing Cedar Rapids, which has UML commits Ryan McGrath and Greg Amlong (who as was noted earlier, is done for the season). Game 1 is tonight.

Fallon's Chicago team didn't make the playoffs, so his season is done.

In the NAHL, Christian Folin (who didn't play) and his Austin team made it out of the first round with a 3-1 series win.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Youngstown beat Cedar Rapids in Game 1 of their USHL First Round playoff series 4-3 in OT. Both J.T. Stenglein (Youngstown) and Ryan McGrath (Cedar Rapids) had a goal for their teams, and Stenglein was named the 3rd Star. Game 2 is tonight.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Dracut's Alec Gacek (Miami, OH commit) had a hat trick as Youngstown swept Cedar Rapids 2-0 in their series, with a 6-2 win last night. Stenglein and McGrath both had an assist for their respect teams.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Thanks to ScottK for finding this and passing this along from the Mack Report. UMass Lowell interested in '94 Zach Sanford.

USHR had this to say about Sanford:
Zach Sanford, F, ’94 -- Late ’94 is a sleeper who will garner the attention of NHL scouts and agents over the course of the next year. This past season the 11th grader played for Pinkerton Academy where he was named the New Hampshire Player of the Year en route to leading the Astros (yep, that’s what they are called) to a state title. Stands at 6’3” and is a fluid skater with a slick set of hands. His compete level will have to be raised, but he has all the earmarks of one who could develop into a high-end prospect.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

UML incoming freshman Logan Johnston had a 2-1-3 in Game 1 of the Doyle Cup as Penticton won 7-2 over the Brooks Bandits.

He was also named the POTW for the BCHL last week ...
Johnston captained the Vees to the Fred Page Cup while assisting on three goals including the series-winner in Game 4. The Penticton native was one of only three players last week to score in both Game 3 and 4 while also recording a multiple-point game. He has recorded four goals and four assists in 15 playoff games.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Youngstown is now down 2-1 in their USHL Second Round Playoffs to Green Bay, as they lost at home 6-3. J.T. Stenglein did have a power play goal for Youngstown, and was named the 3rd Star.

In the Doyle Cup, Penticton lost at home last night, but still leads the series 2-1. Logan Johnston didn't score for the Vees.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Penticton is now one game away from the RBC Cup, after a 6-1 win in Game 4 over Brooks last night. UML commit Logan Johnston had a power play goal.

J.T. Stenglein was a -3 (with 12 PIM) for Youngstown, as their season came to an end with a 4-1 loss to Green Bay in the USHL playoffs.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Great point, forgot about him. So just to correct this:

Here's where the UML roster stands as of today for next season, based on the assumption that all the players that could come in either 2012 or 2013 will come in 2013:

Defense (11):
Senior: Malcolm Lyles
Juniors: Daniel Furlong, Joe Houk (RS), Chad Ruhwedel
Sophomores: William Eiserman, Zach Kamrass, Micki Mihailovich, Jake Suter
Freshmen: Greg Amlong, Christian Folin, Dmitri Sinitsyn (RS)

Forwards (18):
Seniors: Riley Wetmore, Colin Wright
Juniors: Derek Arnold, Josh Holmstrom, Derek McCoy, Joe Pendanza, Shayne Thompson
Sophomores: Tyler Brickler, Stephen Buco, Mike Conderman, Terrence Wallin, Scott Wilson
Freshmen: Adam Chapie, Mike Colantone, Michael Fallon, Logan Johston, Ryan McGrath, Dylan Shapiro

Goalies (4):
Juniors: Marc Boulanger, Doug Carr
Sophomores: Brian Robbins
Freshman: Connor Hellebuyck

Mike Conderman has apparently transferred to Niagara, so that's one less sophomore forward for next year.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Word is that Boulanger and Mihailovich will also not be returning to next years team as well.
