Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Last night's results for UML commits:

In the USHL, Ryan McGrath had an assist and Greg Amlong had a goal and an assist in Cedar Rapids 6-2 win over Green Bay. Amlong was named the 2nd Star. Michael Fallon was pointless with a -2 in Chicago's 5-2 loss to Fargo.

In the NAHL, Adam Chapie was scoreless as New Mexico lost to Amarillo 5-2. Connor Hellebucyk was shelled last night in Odessa's 9-1 loss to Texas, giving up 5 goals on 11 shots before being pulled 21:51 into the game.

In the BCHL, Michael Colantone had a 1-1-2 in Prince George's 5-2 win. Colantone is now 11th in the BCHL in scoring.

And a Globe article from about a week ago on Casey Shea, who's Woburn team is now 3-1-1.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Corey Scammon has 11 points (1-10-11) in 12 games for Cushing. Cushing is currently 8-2-2.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Saturday results for UML commits:

In the NAHL, Connor Hellebuyck rebounded nicely from a bad start the previous night, making 42 saves in Odessa's 4-1 win over Texas, and he was named the second star. Adam Chapie had assists on both of New Mexico's goals in their 6-2 loss.

In the USHL, Michael Fallon had the only goal of the game for Chicago in their 10-1 loss to Green Bay. He was also a team worst -5. Ryan McGrath and Greg Amlong were both a -1 in Chicago's 5-3 loss to Waterloo. Interesting note from this game, Chicago's Nick Saracino (Providence commit) had a hat trick in this game, all of the goals unassisted. I don't remember the last time I saw something like that.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Monty: Do you have any insight on the kind of player Norm is trying to recruit?

Regardless of what Marty has done with the Program and the Tsongas, we will always fall short of BC and BU when it comes to recruiting. BUT......Maine and UNH aren't the glamor programs they used to be and Merrimack has thrown everything out the window with their success.

I'm not sure at this point. It's really tough to tell because the vast majority of the commits he has since he signed on are older players, and I think that's because he got into the 2012 recruiting cycle too late.

Monty, which recruits for next year are Blaise's?

Just Scammon I believe with the younger Eisermann decommiting.
Correct. I'm assuming when Bazin came in, he spoke with Scammon, since he has stayed committed to Lowell.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

I've seen Scammon play and I think he will fit nicely into Bazin's puck possession/uptempo offensive game. Offensively he has good poise and makes a good first pass. He is on the smallish side (since seeing him in the late summer early fall) so the major thing with him will be the change in physicality from prep to Hockey East.

Once again it will be interesting to see who comes in next year. Currently there are 3 93's that still have junior eligibility (Hellebuyck, Shapiro, Scammon) out of 9 total recruits with only 4 seniors leaving. If everyone came in, that would make 19 returning skaters, 8 freshman skaters and 4 goalies. 31 would be a very large roster to carry.

Don't forget, Scammon could be a '13 recruit as well. I thought I read that one of the reasons Hellebuyck chose Lowell was that he was told he could have a chance to play immediately next year. So I'd be surprised if he waited out another year, but obviously that's possible (we'd then be possible carrying 4 goalies next year).

So assuming Scammon comes in for '13, that leaves 8 freshmen next year, on top of the remaining 22 players. There's also the rumored Russian player that is to come in for this semester, which would put us back at 31. There's also still a chance that a player or two might not return anyway (McCoy maybe?). I know UMass has 29 players on their roster and believe they had 30 last year? So the 30 range isn't out of question, especially with a few walk-ons.

This has to be part of the clean-up of the roster class issues as well.

Marshfield Coach Dan Connolly about a kid UML is recruiting after his team beat St. John's and Kevin Emmerling 5-4,
Dan Connolly said:
Any team with Emmerling on it is dangerous. He’s very talented. Anytime he had the puck our kids were backing off of him but later we started playing the body a bit more and he was still very effective.

Michael Colantone continued his hot play last night with a hat trick and an assist in Prince George's 4-1 win over Westside in the BCHL last night. Colantone was named the #1 star.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

UML commits from last night:

In the BCHL, Logan Johnston had no points in Penticton's 6-2 win, while Michael Colantone had an assist in Prince George's 5-2 win.

In the USHL, Ryan McGrath was a +1, while Greg Amlong had an assist but was a -3 in a 5-3 loss for Des Moines.

In the NAHL, Adam Chapie had two assists and was a +2 in New Mexico's 6-3 loss. Connor Hellebuyck was the #1 star in Odessa's 2-1 win over Texas, making 31 saves in 32 shots.

In the EJHL, Dylan Shapiro had an assist in Rochester's 3-1 win over Philly.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

I'm happy to say that after all my comments about 21 year old freshman ... UVM just picked up a commit from a goalie who turns 21 next month. So he'll make our freshmen next year look young! ;)

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Recruit Corey Scammon has 15 points (1-14-15) in 14 games. Cushing is currently 10-2-2 for the season.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

A new recruit according to the Heisenberg site.
J.T Stenglein-LW Youngstown (USHL) 6' 190 7-11-93

http://ushl2011.stats.pointstreak.com/playerpage.html?playerid=4254628&seasonid=7561

Hokydad, any info on J.T.?
Another USHL kid ... like that. We talked about this a while back, but this is a bit surprising if he's a '12 recruit? I know he's noted as such right now. This doesn't seem like it is going to help with equalizing classes.

Here's where the UML roster stands as of today for next season:

Defense (9):
Senior: Malcolm Lyles
Juniors: Daniel Furlong, Chad Ruhwedel
Sophomores: William Eiserman, Zach Kamrass, Micki Mihailovich, Jake Suter
Freshmen: Greg Amlong, Corey Scammon

Forwards (19):
Seniors: Riley Wetmore, Colin Wright
Juniors: Derek Arnold, Josh Holmstrom, Derek McCoy, Joe Pendanza, Shayne Thompson
Sophomores: Tyler Brickler, Stephen Buco, Mike Conderman, Terrence Wallin, Scott Wilson
Freshmen: Adam Chapie, Mike Colantone, Michael Fallon, Logan Johston, Ryan McGrath, Dylan Shapiro, J.T. Stenglein

Goalies (4):
Juniors: Marc Boulanger, Doug Carr
Sophomores: Brian Robbins
Freshman: Connor Hellebuyck

So at this point, that leaves us at 32 on the roster.

The class breakdown in 2011:
Seniors: 3
Juniors: 9
Sophomores: 10
Freshmen: 10

I could see Scammon not coming in till 2013, and potentially see a couple of current players not returning as well, leaving us around 28 or 29 next season.
