UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Well commiting now is like changing underwear. They commit, they decommit. What I wonder is why a parent would allow this? My kid is a 96. The day I would let him make a decision about the rest of his life at 15/16 is the day I should have my head examined. You don't know what the program will be like, who the coach will be, what the kid we be wanting to major in (OK, I know they are all going to the NHL but they need to @ least have passing interest in a major), whether he will improve and get even more promising offers, etc.

I prefer this to the alternative of grabbing the 21 year old freshmen. Have you taken a look at Merrimack's roster lately? Absolutely absurd.

Also, FWIW, I believe a lot of kids are capable of making great life decisions at 15 or 16 and know what they want to major in and where they would love to go. This is why choosing a school is more important than choosing a coach/program etc. If coaches change and the program goes down hill, the things that you valued the most are still the same.

I see no problem at grabbing 21 yr old freshmen. If they are that amazing someone should have picked them up sooner. If they are not that amazing why is everyone so worried?

How much experience do you, as an adult, have with kids that age? Speaking as a parent and as someone who works with kids for a living I have a problem with kids commiting to things when they are 15/16. I am not advocating treating them like infants. I have ranted before how people do not hold people in their early 20s responsible because 'they are kids'. I am of the opinion it is a rare person indeed that has a clear understanding of all the ramifications of their choice at that age. You can have maturity without the wisdom of knowing what your decision will impact later.

As far as the school being more important than the program- even if you take the kid out of the equation and he is going to get an education only- I have a very hard time believing most of these parents who have put it all on the line for their kids to play at that level are going to roll over and play dead if the kid is cut, unhappy when their first priority for so many yrs is hockey. Are you seriously implying these kids are chosing the school because they have looked at it academically and made a decision based on academics? If so, all I have to say is wow. Just wow.

Little more confirmation here.

He participated in the HNIB last month, and scored 23 goals for Woburn High last season leading them all the way to the Super 8. He scored 5 goals in his team's 5-2 win in the first game of the Super 8... his coach describes him as such:
“Casey’s at his best when he’s distributing the puck to everybody, and he’s a finisher,’’ Woburn coach Jim Duran said. “It doesn’t seem like that because he’s always setting somebody up, but tonight, he finished.’’

I think that article is from 2008....

He is a good player. Could very well be a good D `1 player. Little surprised they didnt want to see him play vs higher comp first but hey, the new coaches have a great track record on recruiting side so they should be given the benefit of the doubt.

The problem is that 15/16 is about when you need to decide if you are going NCAA or Major Junior, so its good to have an offer in your back pocket. It's not that the kids SHOULD be making a decision at that point, but the CHL/NCAA system FORCES kids to make huge decisions at that age.

We could kick your *** with 18 year olds, we're just trying to make sure we win the conference.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Yesterday saw a '96 make a commitment to Cornell. Wow, this really is getting ridiculous.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Recruits:
Chris Eiserman and Nanaimo hung on last night and won their first game of the season 8-6. It was Eiserman's first start in the BCHL. His goaltending partner Billy Faust had played the first 3 games of the season. http://www2.canada.com/nanaimodailynews/news/story.html?id=695deead-8ecd-43b9-ab02-dda909a6ec8b

Ryan McGrath and Cedar Rapids lost their season opener last night 4-3 in OT. Ryan was held scoreless, but was +2 with 1 shot and 4 PIM for the game.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

UML adds a D recruit for 2012, Greg Amlong, a teammate of current commit Ryan McGrath at Cedar Rapids. He's 6'1", 188, born 12/8/91. He played in 45 games last year for the Rough Riders, picking up a 1-12-13 and was even on +/-. So far this season he has a 2-4-6 in 7 games with a +5.

Both those recruits BTW are from O'Fallon, MO.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Gotta love those 21 year old freshmen
Yeah, both McGrath and Amlong will be 21 at some point during their freshmen campaign. I'm hoping that this is due to essentially what is winding up as last minute recruiting for the 2012 season and Lowell will start going more after kids like Chris Eiserman (coming in as a 19 year old next season), Corey Scammon (who might be coming in next season as a 19 year old) or Casey Shea (19 in 2013).
