Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future
Here is an unbias opinion about Lyles from some of the limited exposure he had at BC a year ago...
He was very quick on his skates but often appeared out of position and undisciplined with respect to his gap, and proximity to his partner. Those regularly displayed characteristics made it very difficult for BC staff to count on or depend on him in game action. He had multiple opportunities to earn a regular spot in the line-up with prolonged injuries to Wey and Cross. High energy guy that likes to join the rush a lot even when it might not be in the best interest of the team. I personally had questions about hockey IQ because of the "all over the ice" mentality. Ultimately, for Malcolm the writing was on the wall as Wey never returned last year but Malcolm got supplanted by Alber who was much more dependable and consistent in his own end.
Great to hear that Malcolm will be back in Hockey East in 2011-2012 with two years left in eligibility. He will have to earn his ice time but seems better suited to garner top 6 defensive minutes at UML based on being older and hopefully wiser from a performance perspective.
Thanks for the background info. There's no substitute for first-hand assessments from someone who recruits for a living. Are there other scouting reports on Lyles available on the web?
