UML Recruiting 2010 and beyond

Re: UML Recruiting 2010 and beyond

Thanks for the info. I haven't had the opportunity to see any of these guys, but have heard good things about most of them. Coach MacDonald has been recruiting pretty well, so we'll see.

Yes he has...

Re: UML Recruiting 2010 and beyond

On the radio show tonight, Blaise said 7 players have signed NCAA Letter of Intent (Brickler, Curry, Melchiori, Pendanza, Ruhwedel, Thompson & Boulanger).

Sounds like they are the ones getting scholorship money, others will be walk ons with aid, awarded after mid Feb. If not, it goes vs their cap.

That sounds about right. With the high regard that Melchiori's held in, he's probably on a full, and then I'm sure there are some splits amongst the rest.

So this leaves Holmstrom and Rayner as walk-ons? Holmstrom doesn't surprise me, but Rayner, who committed a while back surprises me a bit. Maybe he's having a change of heart? Or he's going to sign during the next period?

Bob, did he say they were still recruiting for next season?

Re: UML Recruiting 2010 and beyond

He said that for the most part they are done, but they are still looking.

The problem with the walk ons is that if they sign a NLOI now, it goes against their 18 scholorships. If they get 10K in aid, it goes againsta partial. If they wait until Feb, it does not

Unless I'm mistaken, walk-ons don't have to sign a NLI anyway right?

Re: UML Recruiting 2010 and beyond

As far as I understand it NLIs are contracts between player and school. I can't imagine you could have an NLI without the school's assent.

Walk-ons are just that... They walk onto the team... Any aid they get will be similar to those who chose not to play hockey like everybody else on campus.

18 full scholarships, or 36 half scholarships, or how ever you wack up the money, it doesnt go aginst the school, they determine who gets what year to year. A walk on could get no money play really good, and then get money the next year, where another player could not play good, and decide to leave, or not get money the next year, I think Lowell has a couple players in both areas. Its just good to sign letters of intent in the first period, then a player cant change his mind latter, (thats is they are good prospects, which Lowell must be very high on since they signed so many.

I'm not sure, but I do not think you can take the money away once it has been awarded. You can earn money, a la Matt Gilroy from BU, but I don't think they can take it away.

True, but if a coach wants your scholarship, he will make a players life so miserable, that most players would be smart to leave, or give it up

Re: UML Recruiting 2010 and beyond

Also that is why very very very few players get full scholarships coming in, Just ask most UNH players, Umile is famous for giving 3for 4.

Re: UML Recruiting 2010 and beyond

It probably depends on what happens with Edwards and Campbell at the end of the season.
Some late recruits work out well and most don't ... so we'll see how it goes. Personally, I hope they both come back.

Blaise said they also had 2 verbal commitments in addition to the 7 who signed for next season. So it sounds like he expects Rayner to be in Lowell. He also mentioned the verbal commitments for 2011 & 2012.

Speaking of Rayner, it looks like he is still out the lineup for Lincoln.

Sounds good. IIRC he can't talk about players that haven't signed a NLI till they're official.

You can take a scholarship away at the end of the year 'just because'. You do not need a reason. Every scholarship is for 1 year. Obviously that wouldn't be particularly ethical and certainly wouldn't make it easy to recruit but you can do it.

Re: UML Recruiting 2010 and beyond

Josh Holmstrom had an assist and was a +1, while Chad Ruhwedel had a +2 in Sioux Falls 5-0 win last night.

Julian Melchiori's Team East won the second game of the CJHL Prospects games 2-0 yesterday, after getting smoked 8-1 in the first game by the West. UNH 2010 recruit Joey LaLegglia was named the Top DMan during this two game set, Joel Vienneau (uncommited '92) was named best goalie, and Beau Bennett (Denver commit) was named the best forward.
