UML 2013/2014 Season ... The Target is firmly on

It doesn't sound like it.. No mention of it in any press release I've seen. Too bad, really. Not that it's a ratings-driven station, but I feel like UML games had to at at least triple their normal ratings on Fri/Sat night.

We have sold our soul just to think we are big league. Very sad.

It is my understanding WUML will have its own broadcast, not Bob and Jimmy. Students will do it.

I asked on their forums yesterday but it looks like they finally took them down.

This is from their facebook page though.

We at WUML are proud to announce that we will be taking over a non-commercial broadcast of all of the home hockey games this season. This means WUML will control the broadcast 100%. We are currently looking to reach out to all UML affiliated clubs who would like to talk about their organizations to be used as transitional material between periods or before/after recreational play. All inquiries should be e-mailed to gm@wuml.org.

Here's a promotional clip for the up and coming broadcast:https://soundcloud.com/patrowe/hockey-promo-2013
When I was working at the station, hockey broadcasts were put up with as part of the funding from the school and a concession to prevent the Hogan administration from taking over completely. I did a lot of the (away) broadcasts just so I could hang out down there, have a few beers, and listen to hockey.

Remember the "Lowell Sunrise" show with the Lowell Sun guys as well as the ridiculous deal signed with the wanna-be NPR guy Chris Lydon. Yep, that was a failed expedition to try and be more like WUMB.

It's nice to see that the students at the station are actively trying to use the success of the hockey team as part of their brand and maybe, just maybe, promote a better working relationship with the school's administration than in years past.

Looking forward to tomorrow night, first championship banner I've seen since the 1981-82 DII one went up fall of my freshman year at Tully, should be a lot of fun.

Wonder if Sacred Heart AD Bobby Valentine will be in attendance tomorrow night? If so, fans should thank him for sucking so much last season which enabled the Red Sox to turn it around this season!

that's good.

Monty, they should start a receiving line around 5PM before game time.

That should be interesting. I believe UNH does this as weli. They have a commercial broadcast and a student broadcast (FM 91.3) for most games.
I just hope the reception is good with these new radio stations. Listening to AM radio in the car can be frustratiing at times with the interference/static compared to FM radio.

Well, this is what the banners look like...

Wait, so I'm confused.

Does this mean I don't get to listen to Bob Ellis on the radio anymore?

Nope, Bob is alive and well on the Riverhawk Radio Network with ESPN 900AM being the "flagship" station as well as on ESPN 1250 AM, WSMN 1590 AM, and Lowell's WCAP 980AM. He'll be streamed live on ESPNNH.COM. Jim Connelly will be his sidekick, replacing the retired Chaz Scoggins.

Boo. No FM. Selling our soul to be 'fake big time'. How the hell am I supposed to listen to Bob live at the games (which I have done for many yrs)? I don't have my old transistor radio anymore.

Lose the character and tradition of what made us and then we are just some other wanna be school trying to be like the big boys. Do you think they might figure out that being bigtime doesn't mean getting rid of the things that helped us be successful in the first place? ( I don't have enough data to stream and I don't have anything AM I can listen in on. So can you tell I am a bit aggravated?)

Yup, AM will be horrible. Should have kept the broadcast on WUML as well.

I'll give the WUML student broadcast a try...would be fun if they went a whole new angle and the students gave it an Ice is Life blog edge in their commentary and play by play, would be a riot. But alas the Ice is Life is no more and will be sorely missed while I doubt the students could pull of the cutting edge style.

I can't even get good phone reception in there sometimes-- AM? not hopeful.

You could always move your seats to the row right below the press booth and hear it live right above your head. :)
