UML 2012 Offseason Thread: "If this is a dream, don't wake me!"

Re: UML 2012 Offseason Thread: "If this is a dream, don't wake me!"

People have been saying Hockey East "will have a down year" for the last 5 years and H.E. has won the national title in four of them. Ciocco is right, that Lowell will be among the top teams, but I think its foolish to say because Hockey East is "down". Boston College is the best team in Hockey East without a doubt and next year will be no different. Lowell will be right up there and I think is a lock for the Garden and maybe a date with BC in the Hockey East final.

Back to back NCAA appearances seems a lock, too, unless Wilson has a sophomore slump or Carr can't replicate his past year. Always good to see a non-traditional team be strong.
It's really tough to be a Lowell fan right now, and think anything but that this team will be good.

Of course, when expectations rise, the question for Lowell has always been ... how will they respond?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I'm not thrilled with all the 21 year olds coming in, but for this one season, I can understand it (Bazin coming in late to the 2012 recruiting class). We did need to see some more of a physical presence on the ice, and it appears that we will. IIRC, the Miami fans, prior to the NCAA game, had been mentioning that Lowell's tallest player was the average height of the Miami squad. So I fully see what Coach Bazin is doing, but I hope that he also sees that guys like Vall, Wilson, etc ... not the biggest, but they've got talented. There's a mix that needs to be recruited, and how this Lowell program does in the long term will still come down to the recruits that are brought in (as with any program of course).

UML going to Division 1 in all sports appears unlikely for the time being. Bummer.. I think America East would be a perfect fit for the school.

It's not surprising. The NCAA has a problem in that a lot of the programs that did move up shouldn't have (Bryant) and so they are reluctant. Also, there is still a clear funding hurdle. Nevertheless, I believe our operations are much more like a D1 school and I believe this is a point to improve upon. The NCAA has a lot to sort out in the next decade... so I think the landscape could still change quite a bit. All the more reason to flesh out the cosmetics... We will eventually go from "we'd like to be d1" to "why aren't they d1?". When that happens you'll see barriers fall.

----

That being said, I know Chaz was illustrating a point and probably a reasonable point, but given a room, pencil, notebook, and half an hour I can give you 150 division 1 schools.

What I got from this article is:
1.)The school's chancellor has formed a committee to explore the future of athletics, and
2.)Some guy from The Sun saying it aint gonna happen....with zero quotes or citings from the University.

Honestly couldn't tell if this was supposed to be a news story, or an op-ed.

Doesn't sound like a dead issue to me, at all (based solely on this article.)

The news guys are pretty tight with the university guys. There is no buzz about going D I in the University itself. Just from the outside.

Re: UML 2012 Offseason Thread: "If this is a dream, don't wake me!"

Anyone heard of any new improvements at Tsongas? I wanted last row in section 118 for my season tix and was told that the row would literally not exist next season. Sounds like they are improving the media rooms and "suites" on that side of the building. My seats used to be in front of the visiting radio guys with Bob on my left at the top of section 119.

Whatever they're doing, I hope further renovations don't keep eating away at seating capacity.

The original arena capacity, IIRC, was supposed to be in the neighborhood of 4500. If we keep it above 5500, and the improvements are worth it IMO, I'm ok with it. Marty knows that every seat lost is potential $$ lost, so he'll want to ensure that he's get a lot for the lost seat.

I suppose I never trust large organizations to not be short sighted

it holds 6500 or thereabouts for hockey, i'm thinking 1000 seats are not in jeopardy

Re: UML 2012 Offseason Thread: "If this is a dream, don't wake me!"

Lowell continues to make a mark on college hockey ... this time with a possibly rule-change thanks to something that happened in the Union game. That and more possible rule changes for DI hockey are here.

Another change would be to the criteria used for instant replay, particularly when it comes to the play being offside immediately as the goal is scored. Last season, Union scored an empty-net goal from center ice in the NCAA Northeast Regional final against Massachusetts-Lowell while a Dutchmen attacker was still in the attacking zone.

Re: UML 2012 Offseason Thread: "If this is a dream, don't wake me!"

only 129 days and 7and a half hours to the open home game against VT. Cant wait. Go Riverhawks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good. I think the only reason we didn't raise a bigger stink was that none of us realistically believed we were going to tie it up.

It's my understanding that the suites on that side of the building are going to be expanded, including a multi-level media suite, sort of on the idea of Northeastern. I think the loss of seats will be minimal as most of the seats lost will be made up inside the suite itself (with the exception of the media suite). This is all subject to change, or course. There were also issues with the dasher boards and these are expected to be redone.

These changes are expected to commence after graduation season.

I suppose it's good that we have growing pains. It means we're growing. I just don't want to limit ourselves at the expense of razzle dazzle... On the other hand these improvements will probably bring in more than what it is expensing us.
