UMD 2010-11 Season

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

G: Kim Martin, Riita Schaublin
D: Jocelyne Larocque, Myriam Trepanier, Julianne Vasichek, Jaime Rasmussen
F: Emannuelle Blais (as a senior), Mariia Rooth, Erika Holst, Caroline Ouellette, Haley Irwin, Sara O'Toole

Those are in no particular order. It's hard to pick an all-time team because I really wasn't following the women's program too closely until about 2003 or so except to see a game here and there when the men were out of town. Never was a huge fan of Potter. And there's a bunch of honorable mentions...how do you pick just a few?

I know!! I did pick up bunch of HMs. Of the forwards: Lanzl, Newfie, Koizumi, Marin, Tallus (hero status), Alexander (a pivotal player in the first 2 championships) Blais, Tuominen . . . and Iya in her own category. Many special players that filled a niche on the teams they were on . . . one of the things that Coach Miller is so good at . . . finding the right place for each player.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

UGH. Great play tonight. I don't want to say they dominated the first and third but they reallllly played well and a fair amount of time was spend in the offensive end of the ice during those periods. We were up 2-1 with roughly 30 seconds left in the third when the Badgers pelted Kim with multiple shots and rebounds and finally in a crease scrum, one bounced in sending the game into OT. The Badgers won the OT faceoff and BOOM-- 30 seconds in they buried it.

Frustrated that there were more than one 5 on 3 PP's and we didn't score.

Tara saw some ice time. She didn't seem as aggressive-- understandably so-- but seemed to find her legs and had some good plays.

Tough, tough loss as the game was evenly played with the 'Dogs really having a good groove.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Schmoe said it best over on the Scores & Highlights Thread:

And UMD beats Wisconsin 3-1 for a weekend split. The Bulldogs and Wisconsin are now tied for first place in the WCHA, one point ahead of North Dakota.

As much as they wanted that sweep and were THIS close, I'm glad they are coming home on the win and not the loss. Two great teams makes for two great games. Way to get it done today, dogs! Special consideration for Jamie Kenyon who's pre-collegiate career was spent in Madison with the Capitals and I'm sure had lots of extra fans in the stands today to witness her second career goal.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

And next weekend the Dogs are in St. Cloud, where the Huskies have yet to win a game this season. That always makes me nervous, but they should come home with six points. With Wisconsin at North Dakota next weekend, six easy points will be huge.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Thanks for the vids Joe . . . I'm surprised by them as well . . . I think it's pretty significant that the Dogs split and almost came away with the sweep down in Madison. I think a home page article said it was the first vicotry for the Dogs at the Kohl since 2007!!! The other think I like about the way the scoring went is that it wasn't just the first line contributing. I wish I could've seen Kenyon's goal . . . she's been so close this season . . . I love the way she plays and it's great to see her hard work pay off . . . and get the team rolling in a huge, huge win.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

St. Cloud has NO players with 10 career goals, and is average all of 1 goal per game while giving up nearly 5. UMD can't let them think they have a chance in the first period, and storm them from the opening faceoff.

When they graduated Hogan, Roberts, Pezon, and Nelson they lost 209 career goals and 245 assists for 454 total points. With the lost experience, it looks like Ashley Nixon's not getting any help in front of her, with 35 shots per game average put on her net.

----
On another note.. I can't imagine *ANY* All-UMD team without Jenny Potter on it.. she's 31, and turns 32 in January, and still outplays D1 college girls on the ice. Regardless of personal opinions, you have to include her in talk as one of the top 3 ever to play for the UMD women. If we could have had IYA for 4 years she may well be that caliber player as well, but you can't really use her on a list of such players.

Erika Holst is an obvious choice with 18 career game winning goals, nearly 20% of her 100 goals meant UMD won. Maria Rooth is another obvious, but after the 3 mentioned, that first batch of players really would create so much talk that you'd never come to a consensus so you just name a bunch of them.

A more fun debate might be comparing the 07-08 National Championship team against any of the first 3 National Championship teams. I'm not positive you can compare last year's championship team with the others, that team came together without the "superstars" who were off with their respective National teams.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Okay, so I was totally pulling for Jamie Kenyon as Rookie of the Week for her sick breakaway goal to get the momentum going that lead to a Bulldog win, but can't really deny Rigsby for stopping a lot of "were gonna win this, dammit" shots at her, specifically on Sunday.

Kudos to our girl Martin. What a class act. Always smiling. Always mellow and even-keeled. I just wish Jenny were going to be here for two more years and not one. Her performance last year, and now sharing the role with Kim....

And if you didn't already see the nice USCHO article on the 'Dogs... (where Kim talks about the stellar goalie situation).

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

You may refer to me in the future as Joe "Out Of The Loop" Schmoe, but where's Jenny going after next season? She's only a sophomore.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Heard if from a friend who, heard it from a friend who.... (you know the song, right?)

So, if I'm not mistaken, I hear that Her Royal Badness will be graduating in three years. Sounds like she's wicked smart and studies lots but I would guess that maybe she had some collegiate studies in Germany that transferred? Also, I believe she will be 25 in July of 2012. I'm not sure if that would make her ineligible for the 2012-2013 season.

Don't count me as a credible source, though.

If Harss graduates.. she needs to do what Riitta did and go for her masters while playing her senior year.. I'm not greedy at all ;) It does make Paige Turner coming in next year more interesting though

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

I hereby discount anything you say, Skatefast, especially if it isn't good news. Otherwise your credibility is above reproach.

How so?

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

I love the story on the front page!!! As it should be . . .

That is bummer news about Jenny. . . I was counting on it . . . However, Santa seems to be finding her old form and if that keeps up it's going to be hard for any team to get the better of the Dogs.

Hoping the 'Dogs take the two they should take this weekend . . . and maybe a little help from UND???

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Jessica Wong makes the Team Canada U22 Roster for the 2011 MLP Cup in January! Way to go, Jessica!

Also, a notable representation from NCAA Championship runner -up (and my other favorite team) Cornell University. Man, they are STACKED. 4 nods from UW fill that roster, as well as smattering of other equally awesome programs.
