UMD 2010-11 Season

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Will you have your Europeans all weekend, or stated another way, does anyone know if it is just the Canadians who miss all of the first weekend in November?

I've been left with the impression that it's just the Canadians . . .

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Curious to see how the series pans out this weekend in Bemdiji with Laroque and Irwin gone for pre 4-Nations cup business and Tara out for at least a week after that stunning display of skater meets boards on Saturday.

Agreed . . . it will be curious to see. Hopefully the team rallies. I think UMD still has better all-around talent and should be the favorites to win. I think this kind of adversity is good and only pays off at the END of the season. I know it's kind of morbid, but I was hoping someone would post a picture of Tara's eye! That was a very scary few minutes.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

The Bulldogs are pretty stacked for talent. I think they'll be just fine without Irwin and Larocque in Bemidji. :D

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Binny, Joe- I'm pretty sure it's just the Canucks. The team will have the following weekend off during the 4-Nations cup itself. I think they'll be fine too. Look at what they pulled off last year! Sounds like some of the younger players are being expected to step it up, regardless. Does anyone know if the American's have a gathering before the cup? Wondering about Wisconsin vs. Minnesota without Knight and Duggan. Wisconsin is so dominate but those two are clearly fantastic for the team.

I tell you though- The Swedish Sensation of Wingberg and Holmlov looked GREAT this weekend. And Audrey Cournoyer keeps firing away. Add some Wong & Willy in there and we'll be golden. As long as Tomcikova isn't super amazing (again), they'll get the puck in the net.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Does anybody know if I can watch the Bemidji series online? I'm not too dialed in on what's available or where to look.

It's still hard to believe Winberg's only a NCAA Sophomore.. she dominated one of the UConn games, putting 10 shots on net but not getting one past the goaltender.. and she's always got the puck.... I think she's the new Tuominen of this team as far as that goes.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

I visited with Maria R and Laura S at UMD Monday pm. Laura showed me some pics of Tara Gray's injury. When she slid into the the boards, she hit head first and the lower right side of her helmet was shoved up. It gave her lips and right eye bad bruises. Her right eye was area was swollen shut. Also strained neck and shoulder muscles. Also suspected a concussion and undergoing tests. Kevin Pates posted an update in his DNT blog today. Tara is out indefinitely!
Rink and Run blog: UMD women lose Tara Gray to concussion
By: Kevin Pates, Duluth News Tribune
Minnesota Duluth senior defenseman Tara Gray of Toronto, Ontario, suffered a concussion in the third period of Saturday’s home win over Minnesota. She was racing toward a puck in the defensive zone, with a Minnesota player, and went face-first into the end boards, she said Tuesday at the DECC. She was briefly hospitalized and is out indefinitely. That leaves No. 3-ranked UMD (7-1) with just two true defensemen (sophomore Mariia Posa and freshman Noora Jaakkola) for a Friday-Saturday series at Bemidji State.

The Bulldogs will also be without scoring leader Haley Irwin and top defenseman Jocelyne Larocque, who join Canada’s team Wednesday in preparation for the Four Nations Cup from Nov. 9-13 at St. John’s, Newfoundland. UMD assistant Laura Schuler is an assistant with Canada’s team.

I saw one of the pictures online...looked like a car wreck victim.. and of course it sounded like it too.

According to Howie Hanson's blog (howiehanson.com):
Bulldogs women’s hockey head coach Shannon Miller has been named the YWCA’s Woman of Distinction, an award that celebrates women’s leadership.

The YWCA Women of Distinction Award recognizes and honors women who have made significant contributions in their community. The event promotes the YWCA mission and dedication to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

The awards luncheon will be November 10 at Harborside Ballroom at the DECC.

I forgot to mention that she also got a bad cut across the bridge of her nose from the face guard.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Does anyone know what Caroline is up to?

And, I hope they give Tara all the time she needs to heal up well. That was such a brutal smash . . .

Good luck this weekend DOGS . . . take it to the Beavs . . . .

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Gilbert frequently covers the lady 'dogs in his weekly column in "The Reader." I would urge those in the Duluth area to look for the free paper. A couple of weeks ago he declared that it was time for area hockey fans to "grow up" and embrace the high quality game that is D1 Womens hockey. I agree.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

I really liked Gilbert's article since he supports my belief that Haley Irwin is one of the best (if not THE best) player in D-1 this season!!! (Gopher fans will simply love his comparison to Krissy . . .:D)

Plus it's just nice to read about WCHA teams . . . it would sure be nice if USCHO did a bit more coverage of the best conference in the women's game.

Maybe it is just perspective, but it seems that 70% of the USCHO articles are about WCHA, 20% about ECAC and 10% about UNH and BU! :D

I would kind of a great with that. Though I would probably streak through ECAC in the above quote and replace it with Harvard.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Anybody head over for the Bemidji Series? I'm guessing not since we were all picking our new seats for Amsoil on Sat morning. I only listened on the radio.

Definite kudos to BSU for working hard and earning a win. With Gray, Irwin, and Laroque gone, it felt more like a leadership issue than missing skill. Yeah, Haley is a sniper but the girls did it without here (and Jocelyn for that matter) most of last year. And with so many girls taking a lot of shots, you have to tip your hat to Zuzana. She's a brick wall. Seems like she's got a good defense helping her out, too.

Gray is such a great leader, I think that was the biggest part missing for the game. Penalties like "too many on the ice" on Friday seems silly for this level of play. I hope she's healing well. With the 4 Nations break, that will give her a little extra time to get back to normal.

Thank god for the split and a big Wooo-hoo to freshman Gillanders for her first goal. That's gotta feel good!
