UMD 2010-11 Season

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Schmoe- I should have implied that I thought you had one in every room.

Was just looking at the Whitecaps roster myself, hopped on here, and see you all beat me to it. So great to see that Iya is playing. And really, they have a great roster.

Should be an interesting game with so many great players on the ice from both sides along with the fact the the Bulldogs will be working out the kinks in the new "Torpedo" system that Miller is implementing.

Not really new, as UMD used the torpedo as far back as 2002, and still featured it the next two seasons. That may be how she plans to get around a presumed shortage of D, because there really is only one true D on the ice with how they used it in the past.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

and thus begins the splitting of hairs....

By "new", I mean new to the current team- none of whom were on the past teams that used it. And by past teams, I mean the 2002 and 2003 teams who were, interestingly enough, National Championship teams.

This is a discussion, nothing more. No score is being kept. Neither a judge nor a jury will decide a winner. Just because you watch a different hockey team than I do, it doesn't mean every reply I make to you is a personal attack. Give me the benefit of the doubt, I'll do the same for you, and the threads will be better and more focused on hockey.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Iya's listed on the roster, but Jessica isn't. I'm guessing that's current. I see Manon Rheaume is on the roster, too. I didn't realize she was even still playing, much less for the Whitecaps. That's kind of cool. Heidi Pelttari is still on the roster as well. Apparently she's sticking around, too. Wheeeee!

Pelttari won't be playing for the Whitecaps .. at least not during the UMD women's soccer season since she's using her senior season of eligibility (5th year sports) and playing soccer this year.

My bad. Apologies for being a little defensive, possibly jumpy, based on previous attacks from the south. I know better than to lump you all into one "type". Especially after sharing a program at the playoffs with a lovely Gopher fan. It made me think that Middle East Peace could be achieved.

I don't get Pelttari's deal. At the end of what I thought was her junior year in 2008-09, all of a sudden she doesn't get to play any more hockey. Remember Haley's mother had to stand in for Heidi's parents at Senior Night? Couldn't have been an age thing because she just turned 25 this year. She had that ankle injury but she still played a couple games of soccer last season and now is playing this season. So what happened with the hockey?

(And I'm sure it was discussed somewhere here at the time, but I'm way too lazy to go look for it.)

Now, just 7 hours from the start of hockey season... Go Dogs!

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

It's a little soon to panic. The regular season hasn't started yet. I didn't really come away from the game with much in the way of impressions. Hard to learn anything from an exhibition game. I didn't think there was much of an atmosphere at the game tonight.

I was surprised to see Saara Tuominen in a Whitecaps jersey, but at least she gets to continue playing, so good for her. Not used to seeing her up against Kim Martin (except in the Olympics, of course...see below.)

More of the same tomorrow. I wonder if Coach Miller will start Harss tomorrow.

Harss will be out for at least another series letting her knee heal up good from surgery this summer. Did anybody else find her "blank" jersey odd?

Jenny Potter.. holy crap.. she'll be 32 in January and is still flying up and down the ice like she did as a Bulldog all those years ago.. she could outskate most 18 year old players still!

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Martin looked a bit nervous/shaky the first period but played to the level we've seen before the second and third periods.. I'm expecting a rotation every other night between Harss and Martin until one of them has a bad streak and the other takes over.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Whats going on UMD?

Opening Night Jitters

Didn't expect to see the #1 team play to a 3-3 tie to a 12 player Whitecaps team...

Anybody care to share some thoughts..

I dunno. I thought that the Whitecaps Roster was stacked with some amazing talent that would make for a good game tonight. Potter's still got her mojo, that's for sure. And I'm so happy to see Iya playing. And Touminen... and...and... and....

First game, exhibition, new system of play.... I thought it went as I expected. Maybe I'll think differently tomorrow.

I will say this. WONG? That girl is amazing and it's just gonna get better.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Not to keep posting over and over but thinking of stuff as I download nearly 500 pictures to go through tonight..

Friddy's shoulder is still not right.. even after the surgery.. she got banged into the boards in the second period and she went right to the bench holding it low.. we already know she can gut it out, but she's gotta do it for 6 months this time

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

The duo of Nixon and Pezon from St. Cloud was impressive also.. the Whitecaps are that good.. and UMD is learning a brand new system and had it out on the ice in game form for the first time.. you could see Coach Shuler asking Shannon about positioning for her defense a lot as she learns the system also.

That's a tough surgery for anybody. The rotator cuff is a complex area. I suspect it will take some more strengthening. Let's just hope it can get strong and not re-injured this season.
