UMD 2010-11 Season

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Cool picture on the Heritage Center's website from the Skate with the Bulldogs event, for "Pucks Against Poverty" on Sunday.. I was shooting UMD softball or I would have been there myself Lana Steck and Vanessa Thibault skating with a girl who's having a little trouble staying upright

UMD is looking for a women's assistant coach? http://ncaamarket.ncaa.org/jobs#/detail/4188027

Did I miss something? I assume Maria Rooth is sticking around. Did Laura Schuler take a full-time job with Team Canada or something? Or is everything hush-hush as usual?

Rooth is heading home. No drama- just decided there were some things in her life happening at home that were important and she wanted to see them through!

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

How many years does Shannon Miller have left on her current contract?

She is signed through 2012-2013 season, so she COULD possibly take over when Sandelin goes to Penn State ;)

Then she could coach a program that would help pay for her salary ;)

It will be interesting to see with a new chancellor, what her odds of being extended past those years. She makes a lot of money (and I would assume she would want more) and I wonder if UMD wants to continue paying that high amount.

It's starting to look like Chancellor Black.. is a HUGE sports fan, regardless of the sport.. and with the women's Frozen Four in Duluth again next season you can be sure he'll be as noticeable as Chancellor Martin was. At least right now, I can't see him pushing huge changes, but we'll see when that time comes.

And she wins a lot of national championships. There's a difference between making money and earning it. :D
Some would argue that she does neither!

Indeed we will.

He'll be locked and loaded with water bottle weaponry for opponents too?

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

My search function seems to be having some issues so I'm sorry if this has been brought up and addressed before, but is it just a typo that Irwin was listed as a senior? If not, how is she one? By my count she's only played three years and redshirted one for the centralization.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Thanks. Must have caused a bit of anxiety for the UMD faithful.

Not really. It's been like that all year. Irwin is a great player, but certainly a mixed bag. I am hopeful that her senior year is a shining year for her. We already know she can play hockey.

I'm hoping for some news soon on Coach Rooth's replacement. Often wondered what the team would be like with a male coach on staff. I think in another thread this topic is approached. Bottom line is you want the BEST coach regardless of sex. But with so many learning styles from the athletes, I wonder what a typical "male" coaching presence would bring to the table. Now, don't ask me what a typical male coaches like-- I'm just spewing random thoughts.

On another note, got my season ticket info in the mail yesterday. Makes me wish I new what the magic formula was to get more people to come to games. Wow, I sure am hitting the heavy topics tonight. Backing away from the computer in 3....2.....1....... * PooF *

Her attitude has always been notorious, but trying to harness the times it makes her better vs. the times it holds her back sure beats the days when some thought her "poor eating habits" and "less than ideal conditioning" (I think those were nice ways of saying she was channelling too much Pat Falloon) would prevent her from succeeding at the next level.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Her attitude has followed her for years. I have no idea how to channel that into productive, solid, consistently good hockey, but I think Coach Miller knows. Last season was a little unusual due to all the time she missed recovering from injuries, so I hope this season she's healthy and playing every weekend. She needs to be a leader.

What I'm wondering is whether this season's juniors, the stars of the 2010 championship season, can get it together and put some numbers up and perform up to their potential. Too often last season it seemed like we weren't seeing 100% effort from all of them. I don't think the Bulldogs could've phoned in the season and walked away with another national title, but I think it was there for the taking. Wisconsin wasn't that much better than the Bulldogs, but the Badgers put in the work. They earned the title. For whatever reasons, the Bulldogs didn't seem like they were clicking until the end of the season. Could have been the torpedo system, but that's kind of a lame excuse after a few series.

Only five more months...the only reason I like winter in Duluth is Bulldog hockey...only five more months...

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Interesting perspective West, and I agree. I think that constantly trying to harness it, or redirect it, is better than fighting it. But at what point do you expect and athlete to emerge or move beyond to do it for themselves? I suspect that constantly managing such energy is... well... and energy suck. Still though, she's a fantastic player and I wouldn't want to go to a Frozen Four without her.
