UMass Lowell Offseason Thread '13: In Norm We Trust

Re: UMass Lowell Offseason Thread '13: In Norm We Trust

Boyle will have to sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules. I believe he can practice with the team but he can't play in any games.
I'd heard about this a week ago but was told to keep quiet. So ... I'm not surprised. Apparently it was between us and Maine. As of next year, we might not have Conner, and we won't have Doug. So we'll probably still need one more.

Do we know the reason he left Amherst... other than the fact that its Amherst and no one want to either play or coach there?

He didn't leave on his own ... their new coach is doing some heavy clean up, including getting rid of most of Toot's recruits. One of their best recruits for '15 (I believe it was), a local kid from the Springfield, MA had committed a while back, but was recently told no. I'm hearing a couple of other recruits that committed during Toot's era, also might have been told "no, thanks."

I believe you're referring to Willy Smith. He opted for major junior over UMass. He was slated to arrive in Amherst in '15 but it wasn't UMass' decision. His dad was a 2nd rd pick of NYI back in day.

You may be right. Just saying what I've been told.

What baffles me is to cut two kids that two Frozen Four schools are now interested in when you're a school that's fighting to make the HE playoffs.

Re: UMass Lowell Offseason Thread '13: In Norm We Trust

Got the Frozen Fenway order form in the mail today. Looks like they are more expensive than the last Frozen Fenway. $75 for upper level seats, $50 for lower level.

A player has to sit out a year if he gets cut from a team? That seems like overkill.

This just came out...

Mike McMahon ‏@MikeMcMahonCHN 43s
Checked for clarification from NCAA last week re: Kevin Boyle transferring to Lowell. Rumor was UMA released him from the roster. From (1/2)
Mike McMahon ‏@MikeMcMahonCHN 31s
(2/2) what I've been told, Boyle could be eligible to play at Lowell next season, but UMass would have to agree to special circumstances.

So while it's unlikely, there is room within the rules for Boyle to be eligible at Lowell next season.

Re: UMass Lowell Offseason Thread '13: In Norm We Trust

Makes no sense. So a new coach comes in, cuts guys, and now through no fault of their own they have to sit out a year unless the team that cut them agrees? Why should that team have any say whatsoever? They passed on a player, and to add insult to injury now they get to decide if he can play for someone else? Unreal. The NCAA does a lot of stupid crap, but this might be the most asinine thing I've ever heard of.

Having this conversation on twitter, but I wouldn't doubt that he'll sit out this year, and I don't think either he or Lowell will push it. Boyle knew that was probably the case when he chose Lowell over Maine (that he might be able to play this year), but probably likes the idea of playing for a better team and by sitting out this year, gives himself a very good chance to be the #1 in the '14/'15 season (if Connor leaves).

As UMLFan said its about playing time. Boyle will better serve himself and program by sitting out this season. As someone who loves college game I hope Hellebuyck stays all four years but if he plays anywhere close to 2013 levels Boyle could be number one goalie in '15-16 or even earlier.

At the golf tournament today it was announced that Josh Holmstrom will be team captain for the 2013-2014 season. No word on who will be wearing the A's.

I'd expect Scott Wilson to have an A. Great all around player who coach and teammates credited with for his defensive play and leadership during teams run in Feb, March and April.
