UMass Lowell: 2023-24 Season

Game 1 lineup.

Dominated the OT but lose on a bad screen by our own guy. I thought Bentley and Crasa had solid games. As per usual PP sucks PK was good.

Well, the real problem was allowing the UAA player to circle the net and come out front alone. Too bad as they did a nice job battling back to get it to overtime. They did dominate OT and had a couple of great chances to win it.

The Good:

1. Bentley looks like a completely different player. He's going to have a big year.
2. Crasa appears to have regained his scoring touch that he had as a freshman.
3. Rheaume looked really good as well.
4. They battled back late from a 2-goal deficit to force OT on the road.

The Bad:
1. Lots of shots, too many of them of the "easy-to-save" variety.
2. Lots of rust that needs to be shaken off, especially on some of the d-men. I didn't think that Jonsson or Cooper had great games at all.
3. Fall behind by 2-goals on the road to most HE teams and you're not going to get to OT.

The Ugly:
1. These refs were brutal. An uncalled slew-foot while the ref was looking right at it. At least 3 blatant trips that went uncalled (the UAA fans next to me were wondering how they didn't get called). A Lowell goal called back when a UAA player knocked the net off just before it went in. Still not sure how a hand-pass got called a penalty on UAA either.

missed the first 15 as UConn was awkwardly putting away a football win.

Good that Crasa scored, would like to see him going. As bad as the refs were we got away with a couple of things as well. Tough to watch this team put pucks on the net but just do't seem to have the ability to make more out of them. I know i'm going to blame the much maligned offensive skill issue until proven otherwise.

UAA looks tough but I also suspect we're... not great.

Talked to a former 25 year season ticket holder for UAA, he was mildly disgruntled about the program and some of the issues. Particularly the funding of the basketball team's new facility without moving through with hockey. He wasn't upset about the basketball team's fortunes but the powers that be on the hockey side were completely flat footed when they didn't realize it wouldn't include hockey. Why I learn this shit in a brewery in Lorton, VA? I don't know. The guy was former military and was hanging out with some of his friends who like to come by my regular spot and saw the sweatshirt. He was disgruntled to the point he didn't realize we were playing tonight but i had a nice convo with him. Odd... but i've learned that odd happens quite a bit in Metro DC.

Scott was dead center during 2nd intermission. I assume that's your 24 sweater, i didn't quite see the ponytail pop out. Haven't seen you in awhile

The camera guy was dreadful and Lowell's first goal was marred by them switching cameras right in that second.;)

Game 2 lineup.

Changes from last night.
In: O'Donnell, Silkalns, Cardona.
Out: Peterson, Moriello, Becker.

Where's Owen Fowler?

No score after the 1st.
SOG - UML 12-4
PP - UML 0-1, UAA 0-1
They seem to be doing a better job going to the net but nothing to show for it yet.

Lowell 2-1 final. Goals by Rh?aume and Truman. Former River Hawk Matt Allen had the UAA goal.

SOG - UML 28-22
PP - UML 0-3, UAA 1-4

Hopefully ScottK will provide the Good, the Bad and the ugly again.

Out and about only saw a little bit to say pomegrate uaa jerseys looked hideous on the phone

The Good:
1. What a snipe by Scout Truman. We could use a lot more of that. Rheaume's goal was nice as well.
2. Tremendous defensive effort by the entire team.
3. Pavicich wasn't tested much in the 1st 2 periods, but looked really good in the 3rd.
4. O'Donnell and Cardona looked really good. Vaarwerk was excellent on faceoffs (11 out of 16)

The Bad:
1. The power play needs some work. It looks better than last year, but still isn't great, and yes, I realize it's early in the year.
2. Some stupid penalties, like Meehan's right after the 2nd Lowell goal. Big scrum at the final buzzer and punches were thrown, but no penalties called. Can't do that in Hockey East.
3. Once again, it took more than 40 minutes to find the back of the net.

The Ugly:
1. Those UAA jerseys. I get that it was Skating Strides night, but dark pink? Didn't look good, especially with the green helmets and gloves.
2. This is more of an addendum to last night, but I was told that the video review system was not working yesterday. However, when the coaches reviewed the game tape, they saw that UAA was offside for both their 1st and their 2nd goal, and a UAA D-man intentionally knocked the net off of its pegs just before Lowell scored a goal that was immediately waived off, because the net was dislodged. Also, there was a pretty obvious slew-foot that the ref watched and didn't call. Norm was yelling at the refs all night, and not having the ability to challenge any of those calls drove him nuts.

The Youtube announcers also mentioned possible offside on both of those goals. They wondered why Lowell didn't challenge before being told the video review system wasn't working.

Congratulations to UML alum Connor Hellebuyck on signing a seven-year contract extension with the Winnipeg Jets.
