UMass Lowell 2022-2023: Valley Steamroller Edition

My guess is Mezsargs plays another season of Junior hockey. He struggled with Tri-City (USHL) before being sent to Danbury (NAHL). His numbers are not very good, but he's playing for a team that has only won 3 out of 56 games.
That would put us in a bit of a dangerous situation with potentially only two goalies on the roster though.

RPI is adding UMass Lowell (F) Ryan Brushett out of the portal. I like his game a lot. Had 22 points (8g, 14a) in 35 games last season. This season battled some injuries and still had 10 points. He'll bring some skill to Troy.

I can honestly say that I was happy to see Merrimack lose their first game. This tournament has been mostly garbage, and generally I would have rooted for the HE teams, but the Merrimack student section absolutely disgusted me at the Garden, so I was OK with them getting their asses handed to them.
Merrimack alum here. I loved that Merrimack fans turned out in droves, and that there was a tremendous student turnout, but I was really disappointed in the classless chants (and I commented about it on the Merrimack thread). Reflects poorly.
I'm a veteran of the mid to late 70's rivalry days ("Merrimack stinks, just like the river" and the FEVER chants were 2 of my favorites from the Chiefs fans). Kids nowadays are just not that clever.

Baseball is now 4-20. Is it time to send Ken Harring his walking papers? Baseball is the one sport I expected to do well relative to America East.

Yeah, I didn't get it. I understand that you (the students) haven't been there so it's tough to do the "act like you've been there before" thing, but three/four minutes into the game and a F You Lowell chant starts up. For no reason? And then is repeated over and over? I have no problems with swearing, but c'mon be better.

Damn.

Weren’t they picked to finish 2nd in the AE preseason poll or am I dreaming?

I don't know. When we were going to move up I thought field hockey and baseball were going to be the most viable options at doing well between experience and facilities.

Track is often it's own world and I'm glad we have done well but I admit I am a team sport guy first.

They were indeed picked to finish 2nd. That record is obviously awful, but of their 24 games, they've only played one home game so far and they did win that one. Hopefully some time at home will help.

They played a really tough schedule to start the season. South Carolina was #23 when the played. Virginia Tech was #11 when they played. Florida Gulf Coast was unranked at the time, but is now #16. That's 8 of the first 11 games on the schedule. They also played 3 at Binghamton, the defending league champs. Not surprisingly, they went 0-11 in those games, and many of them weren't close, though the Binghamton games were (one went extra innings).

Portal signings for Lowell have been underwhelming on the offensive side so far and other than goalie Pavicich, no help on the D line either. Was hoping we'd look to bolster our roster, but disappointing in my view thus far. Northeastern and Maine doing a great job adding offense. No clue what Norm's thinking other his interest in a 25 yo player from HC. Yikes indeed!!!!

I would imagine, just like we are seeing with regular recruiting the past couple of years, it's not easy to bring in high-scoring forwards here because of the system.

There may be room to add a couple more forwards from the portal. They currently have 9 forwards returning, Peterson will make 10. They have to bring in '02 Jonathan Horn. I believe they'll also bring in Jaiden Moriello, Shawn O'Donnell, Girts Silkalns and Jak Vaarwerk, so that makes 15 forwards.

Any updates on the future plans of Jake Stella and Filip Fornaa Svensson? They are both 24 years old.

I don't believe there's any room to add to the defense. If nothing changes, they currently have 7 players returning. They have to bring in '02 recruits, Ben Brunette and Sean Kilcullen. I think they will also bring in Adam Cardona, so that makes 10 defensemen on the roster.

The way Fornaa-Svensson spoke in this senior tribute video, it sounds like he is coming back. https://twitter.com/riverhawkhockey/status/1631802886588964865?s=46&t=By5OCiYLFOeYdtq3w-44SQ
