UMass Lowell 2015-2016 Season Thread

Re: UMass Lowell 2015-2016 Season Thread

It will be interesting to see which Lowell team we see tonight. From last weekend we saw something that has identified itself in several other games and especially showed through against NU. The first period was probably the strongest period we have seen from Lowell in a long time with the exception of the 70 seconds or so when they got hemmed in their own end and had the puck on their stick about 4-5 times before turning it over and getting scored on. The first period they were very physical and relentless on their puck pursuit and then they got what appeared to be tired. They then started chasing the game, stopped being physical and losing the battles on the walls. In their own end they were slow on closing on their checks and allowing NU to skate and cycle and get to net front. If you look at some of the inconsistency we have seen against the more physical teams they have played, you have seen an inability to play a physical and heavy game for 60 minutes. If you look at the make up of this team, the defence is not physical and do not intimidate opposing teams . The forward group are all smaller in stature and bring a similar skill set that doesn't include a a physical presence to the game. This team is not built for real physical play and thus they have struggled on their forecheck and getting to net front to score goals on second chance opportunities. On the contrary, when they attempt to play a real fancy and skilled game with no physicality, we see the numerous turnovers, soft passes and lack of taking pucks hard to the net.

If you watched the Beanpot final, you saw both Boston teams that were very skilled but made "hard" plays where passes were crisp, pucks were dumped deep with good puck pursuit and limited turnovers. Every opportunity they had, both teams took pucks hard to the net and always had passing options both above and below the puck. Tonight we will see a BU team that is has very good team speed, is very quick on the transition and activates it defence and generates a great deal of offence from their blue line in second wave attack and joining the rush. They are not a real physical team but one that is very quick on the forecheck and have very good sticks. Lowell's overall team defence will be very challenged tonight and it will be interesting to see the level of physical play they bring in attempting to neutralize BU speed.

It maybe cliche but as we approach this weekend and the weekend with BC, your best players have to be the best players in big games. Although Coach Bazin would not state this publicly, a challenge has to go out to the upper classmen and leadership group on this team that they need to step up. Nobody is questioning the character of this team but there needs to be a level of accountability in your play week in and week out. You cannot be on the ice and get scored on in the opening shift, you cannot make soft plays, you cannot take bad penalties, you cannot continue to stick handle in outnumbered situations and continue to turn the puck over and you have to make plays and score goals in high pressure situations and when the game is on the line. It is easy to put up numbers, points and be + player against the ASU and UMass alike but you need to step up in the big games. I anticipate this challenge has been given to this team and it will be interesting this weekend on how they respond.

Those are my observations.

Quiet night here so far in the Boston hinterlands. Crowd is sleepy. Both teams are sleepy. Referees are sleeping on boarding calls.

BU scores on a breakaway, 1-0 after two. That was the second breakaway on the night for BU. I believe the top defensive pair were on the ice for both.

And now tied 1-1 on a goal by White, assisted by Dmowski, at 12:31 of the third.

Meanwhile, Amherst losing 2-0 to Northeastern in a very empty looking Mullins Center on NESN. What was it certain UMass trustees were saying several years ago as justification for eliminating Lowell's program, lack of fans in the seats on tv games...? Here's something funny from the game thread on that UMass hoops hockey message board (since there are no more Amherst fans or threads to be found on these boards anymore, all three of them tend to talk to each other over there) -

"Received an email from UMass athletics letting me know this was the "Maroon Out" game. First 2,000 fans get free t shirts! The next day the local charities will get 1,700 maroon t shirts.Good thing the seats are maroon because the game will be televised. Maybe the recruits won't notice."

By looking at the "crowd" on tv at Mullins, this comment isn't far off. Pretty sad.

Great, Dmowski takes a dumb boarding penalty with 30 seconds left in regulation. Will carry over to OT if they make it there. Bad penalties along with lazy puck play are hallmarks of this UML squad.

I'd be happy to get out of BU with the point tonight given no Chapie, Campbell hurt (status unknown), and the overall careless game play of late.

Re: UMass Lowell 2015-2016 Season Thread

Well that was quick. BU wins 2-1 in OT. .29 into OT...under review...

Bench Dmowski tomorrow. He's the Chris Maniccia of this season.

Re: UMass Lowell 2015-2016 Season Thread

Goal stands. BU wins 2-1 in OT.

Lose tomorrow night and kiss NCCA at-large bid goodbye. Same story as last season, bad losses will do them in again and will need to win out the HE tournament to get into NCAAs.

Re: UMass Lowell 2015-2016 Season Thread

Listening to the radio Dmowski seemed to be in the play doing good stuff most of the night. Ugh

What? You could actually listen to the radio?

Hey, we're in fourth place now! Yeah! BU breathing down our necks right behind us. Might find ourselves out of first round bye very soon.

Lots of white noise and wavering, hence the intermittent inattention. The yelling SCOOOOOORE comes through no matter how bad it gets.

Honestly he was decent all night. The boarding penalty was way to my right in the near boards so I didn't see it clean. Refs let a lot of heavy contact go tonight with no whistle. I can only hope it was a legit call considering they were mostly fair this evening.

The problem is you have no idea when you hear SCOOOOOOOORE which team has actually scored as Bob applies it equally to both teams!

On the bright side, UML still #13 in PWR and hanging in there but tomorrow is do or die.

Honestly, Dmowski did appear to be having a good game but this team just has a habit of taking stupid penalties which wasn't the case the past few years. Very frustrating.

Hope Campbell is ok. Guessing Hough suffered something like a shoulder or collarbone last week as he wasn't in line up tonight. At least Chapie is back tomorrow night and hopefully he's over his bout of taking stupid penalties.

According to Bob and Jim it was a good call. I think he will be a solid player in the coming years but he has taken some bad penalties this season. Need to play smarter. This is second game in row at BU where Lowell loses in OT after taking a bad penalty.

Dmowski = Maniccia

Hope not but that BU game last year was the last we really ever saw of Maniccia and he was great at faceoffs, etc. Disappeared to the doghouse after that game and then gone.
