UMass Lowell 2015-2016 Season Thread

Re: UMass Lowell 2015-2016 Season Thread

I recall hearing a few seasons ago a "where's your beanpot?" chant against BU, but that's about as creative a chant as I've heard since I've been going to games. It's rare that a chant catches on where the entire arena joins in.

That one is old as the hills, I remember that one from when I was first watching.

I miss all the creativity. The Tully was great for that because it was such an intimate setting. At the Tsongas I sit across from the bench. From there I can't hear what they say when a guy goes in the box because of the band and music. I can tell they are saying something and a lot of them are saying it but have no idea what it is. I think it has changed from previous years.

I also dearly miss Sieve after a goal instead of the insipid the wheels on the bus go UML song.

Most if not all good fight songs are pre-WWII when they were band marches. I figured out why I don't like ours so much... my limited play of EA NCAA football and basketball has a fair number of them stuck in my head. Flat out, they don't fit.

Our fight song will never be sung in Korean.

Hard for the entire arena to keep a chant going when the students do it three times and then stop. By the time, the chant gets to us and fans at mid-ice pick it up, the students do it one more time and stop. It's frustrating.

Yeah, in general the student section seems a bit light on numbers and enthusiasm. They seem to lack the leadership of previous years when they had a core group of rabid fans that went to every game and got the crowd going.

Monty just has to re-enroll. Only real answer to this.

Time for 120 minutes of playoff level intensity this weekend. Looking at remaining games for top 5 HEA teams I think ND, BC and PC are fighting for top 3 spots leaving BU and UML to fight for 4th. If Lowell can’t at least split with BU then we might as well get used to the idea of coming in 5th and hosting Amherst or Merrimack in the first round with the reward being a trip to Agganis in round 2. Even with splits against BU and BC which is no easy feat there would be a good chance of ending up tied for 4th with BU or in 5th.

Boston College
Points now: 26
Games left: MCx2, VTx2, UMLx2
Predicted finish: 35 points

Notre Dame
Points now: 26
Games left: MEx2, PCx2, BUx2
Predicted finish: 34 points

Providence
Points now: 23
Games left: CTx2, NDx2, MAx2
Predicted finish: 33 points

Boston University
Points now: 21
Games left: UMLx2, NHx2, NDx2
Predicted finish: 28 points

Lowell
Points now: 24
Games left: BUx2, BCx2
Predicted finish: 28 points

When we went to the Frozen Four I kinda called it the convention... when you get down to it, it really is. There's the conference site with the sponsor hotels and a few brief tourist opportunities. It doesn't surprise me the Frozen Four experience failed in Philly. Too disconnected. Conventions thrive when a group of unassociated individuals come together as one and share the same hotels and bars.

From the College Hockey Inc. notes:

Smith Paces UMass Lowell

C.J. Smith (Des Moines, Iowa/Chicago-USHL), who a year ago was the first freshman to lead UMass Lowell in scoring in 20 years, has improved his scoring pace as a sophomore. He leads the No. 11 River Hawks in goals (13), points (30), shots (98) and plus/minus (+15, tied) entering a key home-and-home Hockey East series with No. 7 Boston University. One of six Iowa natives in Division I, Smith fell in love with the sport watching the USHL’s Des Moines Buccaneers.

Most Career Points, Sophomores
73 – Andrew Poturalski, UNH
65 – Danton Heinen, Denver (BOS)
65 – C.J. Smith, UMass Lowell
56 – Dennis Kravchenko, UMass
56 – Landon Smith, Quinnipiac

ND has 4 games against PC and BU. I think looking at what you posted, BC and PC are locks for 1 and 2. If ND falters against PC and BU, it could come down to a tie breaker with Lowell for 4th/5th, and that's a tb Lowell wins. I however, don't think it'll come to that, because the 'Hawks will be lucky to get more than 3 points in their last 4 games.

Re: UMass Lowell 2015-2016 Season Thread

Lowell is a strong possession team and they're getting shots on net. What they're lacking are second chance opportunities. They're not getting to the front of the net to put back pucks and score the really greasy goals. They need to attack the net more, IMO.

I think they would be better served by splitting up Zink and Kapla. None of the other D handle the puck well, and when the top pairing isn't on the ice it hurts the 'Hawks offensively.

Connor Hellebuyck starting against the Bruins tonight.

Re: UMass Lowell 2015-2016 Season Thread

...and the Bruins score on him 1:30 into the game. :(

To me its more that not already being at the top of the NHL level is going to be somehow a condemnation on him with Gibson waiting in the wings.

Re: UMass Lowell 2015-2016 Season Thread

Serious question ... a sweep by BU basically puts an end to the season for Lowell?

I think if Lowell is banking on an at large bid, being swept this weekend is most likely the kiss of death. I think the potential over saving grace would be if they finished 5th. That way they'll be playing a highly ranked team for 2 in the HE quarterfinals, but yeah, get swept and we'll see ya next year.
