Re: UMass Lowell 2015-2016 Season Thread

Seriously.... Every year you check the scores to see if somebody else pulled through... And every year... Whiff!

I don't harbor much love for the Boston Monday tournament... And that it basically goes on autopilot every year doesn't help.

Kind of a snooze if you don't have a team involved. I know that is hockey sacrilege but I can't think of the last time I cared about the outcome short of whether the team we were playing in between was going to be pi55ed off at themselves.

And that would be Northeastern Friday night.

Four big points available this weekend for the Hawks. We've won the first game against both teams, one on the road in Durham and one in Belfast.

The teams we're competing for home ice:
NU vs BC 0-1-1
vs BU 0-2
vs ND 0-1-1
vs PC 0-2

UNH vs BC 0-1
vs BU
vs ND 0-2
vs PC 1-1

Take nothing for granted this weekend, don't take NU and UNH lightly. Play hard and don't let up. These four points are huge and I hate to say it but every game from here on out is must win, especially in PWR.

Now would be a really good time to find the offense for this team. You obviously can't go off of last weekend, but you can't expect Boyle and the defense to keep these upcoming high scoring offenses to 1.63 goals per game. Lowell needs to be able to win a 4-3 game at some point.

Re: UMass Lowell 2015-2016 Season Thread

Can't read too much into last weekend. Good teams win the games they should and Lowell did that. Very obvious by play of team and Coach's comments that he wasn't real pleased with Fri effort and consistency in play. Felt Sat game was a better effort. Overall take some positives away from weekend and hopefully some developed a little more confidence after getting onto scoresheet and getting some points.

Keys to weekend, I believe, will be establishing physical presence against a good skating NU team including a strong forecheck and placing pucks where Lowell has support and opportunity to track and retrieve loose pucks. Puck management and reducing the number of turnovers is always key with this team. One area that surfaced last week was a lack of width and depth to their attack on the entries into the offensive zone. Numerous times we had 3 forwards all in a straight line horizontally inside the dots on their spacing crossing the blue one. This becomes easy to defend and leads to odd numbered rushes if the puck is turned over. In the offensive zone, we still need to see more puck rotation east to west and from low to high and high to low. This should spread the defensive zone coverage more, open up both shooting and passing lanes and allow more shots to the net coupled with being able to get to the hard areas in front of the net for second chance opportunities. Also need to see tape to tape passes, better sequencing on power play with puck movement and then rotation as opposed to skating the puck around in the offensive zone and then moving the puck at last minute or when options have been reduced under pressure.

This will be a big weekend where we need to see Lowell continue to build some momentum and consistency in their game where they win the puck battles, wear teams down shift after shift, reduce the number of mistakes and be dominant for longer stretches in the game. I am curious to see if Coach Bazin will begin to solidify the line-up and see less movement of players in and out. Obviously a win or loss on Fri will play a role in those decisions. Those are my observations.

As far as Friday night's game goes, once the score was 4-1, did it seem like the Riverhawks were just trying to play more keep away than driving the net and trying to score? Maybe not trying to run up the score on the first night, perhaps?

As far as Saturday goes, when things started to get chippy, they dropped those notions and unleashed themselves, not having to worry about playing them the next day. Is that a wrong assumption?

I read what you write as something a coach would say. Loving the game, but never having played it ... seriously, thank you.

Good stuff Rhobserver. Looking forward to the games this weekend. Just need this snow to stop falling. The wet heavy snow will make for an interesting commute.

40 min of the worst hockey Lowell had played in a long, long time.

Re: UMass Lowell 2015-2016 Season Thread

I will give NU credit, because they didn't quit in this game. In the meantime, Lowell did. If I'm not mistaken, shots early in the second were 18-4. And then Lowell called it a day. Boyle gets full credit for stealing us a point. Also it must have been a sad moment for him, feeling like he was playing behind the UMass defense again. Horrendous giveaways in front of the net (three chances to clear, at least) resulting in the first goal. He kept us in the game, with some astounding saves. I don't have much good to say about most of the other 19.
