Re: UMass Lowell 2015-2016 Season Thread

Can anyone explain why the 2 min penalty for a hand pass? I understand stopping play and bringing the puck out though I have never seen anyone get 2 min for it.

Was this the penalty on Campbell after the face off he took? If so, he didn't keep both hands on the stick during the face off and while down low, used his hand to win the face off by pushing the puck back to a teammate. Face off violation as that's a no-no.

It appears the rule was added last season.

Hand Pass by Faceoff Player: The players taking a faceoff are not allowed to use their hand to play the puck. A violation of this rule will result in a minor penalty, similar to the NHL rule.

Well that was certainly a craptacular weekend. I truly hope these two losses don't come back to haunt them when they just barely don't make the NCAAs again this year.

The other games that have me worried are the two vs. Arizona State and the AIC game. Perfect storm on the horizon unless they learn to win the games they should and have to win.

And yes, can we please ditch the ugly third jerseys once and for all. 0-2 in them and the next time they try a third jersey, get a bit more creative than just slapping the logo on the front and calling it a day.

If they don't start playing a lot better beginning Dec 28th we won't need to worry about AIC or ASU by the time those games are played.

I think that is only the first or 2nd time it has been called in college hockey. That kind of day.

Yeah, it was just so blatant though. I hadn't heard of the rule before, but if that's the rule...

Speaking of Campbell... can he start to show up this season, because that would be great. Lowell had chances today, but couldn't finish. Basically the story of the season. Campbell got stuffed on a short-handed breakaway, McGrath couldn't bury the penalty shot. UConn's first goal was pretty flukey, going off I think two skates and in. The second goal though, you could see that one coming. UConn was humming around the net, the puck was loose and Boyle never had a chance to get off his knees to take away the top shelf, high angle shot.

So at the unofficial midway point of the season, I'm going to say the team is going to need alot more out (just eye test, not looking at stats) of the above mentioned Campbell, Dmowski, Kapla, and Smith if they want to be an at-large team in the NCAAs. The defense has been there, but that's starting to breakdown. Need these guys to start scoring at even strength and take some of the pressure of the defense.

I have no issues with Smith as he's been doing what he's supposed to do scoring-wise (although two 10 minute misconducts in the last few games due to running his mouth off to the refs for some reason is a problem, can't score when you're sitting in the box for essentially one full period). AJ White needs to step it up a bit and don't get me started on Campbell. Despite his ability to win face offs, he's been practically non-existent scoring this year and that isn't the first breakaway he's missed this year. He needs to really pick up the pace in the second half as it's been a very disappointing season for him so far.

Played really well the first period, and I think the travel got to their legs in the second and especially the third. They were stagnant most of the third.

The penalty shot by McGrath was ... weak, is putting it mildly.

CJ has been a great player for this team since he got here, but he's hurting them now by mouthing off. Gotta keep that stuff under wraps kid, let the coaches handle it.

Frustrating, frustrating, frustrating. Four straight generally bad games. Hopefully the kids can enjoy the time off, and get some rest before it starts up again in three weeks.

On another note, and as was mentioned earlier, congrats to UML Basketball. I know BC basketball generally sucks, but getting a win over an ACC squad is still huge (and their first ever over an ACC team).

"Pesky-M", haven't see you recently, have you been at the games?
I will see my coffee drinking friends at the game against our 'flagship'.
Been saving money for the Tampa trip in April, had too much fun in Boston last year rooting for Providence/against BU.

Playing much of the 2nd period shorthanded didn't help. Another bad penalty by the Hawks late in a tied game opened the door for UConn. Give the Huskies credit they played hard all weekend and took advantage of their opportunities.

Yup, even the breakaway by Campbell looked to be shot right into Nichols glove. Speaking of breakaways, has the team converted on any of them this season?

The mouthing off needs to stop. I'm sure the word will be out with the league officials and he'll be on a very short rope going forward. The offense has struggled for much of the season and they can't afford to have their best offensive player in the box. The same goes for Chapie.

Very frustrating. It would have been nice to have a few more wins before the break. It will be an interesting second half as the league schedule will be much tougher.

@AlbanyDevilsPR
The @AlbanyDevils have released G-Doug Carr from his PTO. Carr appeared in three games, going 1-2-0 with a 2.34 GAA & a .897 SV%

Interesting stat on UConn's Tage Thompson. He has 7 goals on the season all on the PP (7-5-12). Three of them came this past weekend which included the game winner in both games.

He'll likely be signing a new contract with a different team very shortly, possibly this afternoon - one a bit closer to home with a couple of familiar teammates.

Oh wow, I was already considering making a trip to see that team I think you're referring to. Now I have even more incentive.

Re: UMass Lowell 2015-2016 Season Thread

Makes some sense to me... Essentially delay of game.
Couldn't see it from where I was.

The dude in front of me kept saying they call it in the NHL all the time. In >30 yrs of college hockey I had never seen that called before. Googled it. The rule change happened this yr. It wasn't something they call in college until this yr (I KNEW I hadn't seen it before!!). If you were playing penalty BINGO this would have been a jackpot.
