UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

I'm not for the only reason that the three losses have come at the hands of top-ranked Boston College and #3 Denver, two of them on the road in places where opposing teams don't see many wins. Bottom line, I think Lowell is getting that benefit of the doubt that the scoring is in a slump and expected to rebound. A simple lack of scoring and costly penalties is holding this team back big time.

Truth be told none of us should necessarily care what the polls look like but to look at it and analyze it a little, I have to think UML is clearly getting some serious benefit of the doubt.

- UML is one of two sub-.500 teams in the top 20.

- UML's only win is against 3-3-0 (.500) CC. While a road win certainly gets UML some "bonus points", but CC has wins against Clarkson x2 (both 1-goal home wins) and a solid win at AFA, not exactly a murderer's row. On a 3-game losing streak started by UML, will this UML win continue to lose its luster?

- The home tie doesn't exactly inspire confidence since it was vs UVM. The longer UVM goes without a win the worse this tie will look for UML.

It's early, we'll see how things shake out - things are still very much a blend of preseason on paper strength and the results we have. But not for much longer. Another bad weekend and UML is going to drop out completely.

Being under .500 isn't foreign territory for the program, that's for sure! :D

Not sure what you mean about the 3-game losing streak started by UML, but other than that, fair points Nick.

Well, I was just stating that in fact CC has a 3-game losing streak that started with a loss to UML (followed by a sweep at the hands of Cornell, who could be pretty good this year).

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

Interesting to see that UMass has now picked up ex-BC recruit Frank Vatrano as a commitment, the year after they got Tiefenwerth also from BC.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

I didn't watch either game this weekend... but given what I've seen... It'll do them a whole lot of good.

---

If I were going to say my thoughts openly I would have said its strongly likely we'd lose both. BC is a juggernaut these days and we have some issues. Some time to work together and polish things up... I don't know who they play next but they need to put up a strong result.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

Good article about Sinitsyn from Hockey's Future.
“He has a heavy shot, but finding an ability or growing more accustomed to changing his attacking lanes will be very important for him in order to create offense because right now I feel he is a little stagnant in the lanes,” Bazin said. “But that is a maturing process. You have to give the guy time. Some people play junior (hockey) for three years and this is really his junior experience in a sense.”

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

Enjoyed both UML-BC games this weekend. My thoughts on UML: still finding their way. Is Wilson still on the team? Jury still out on Houk - looks good and bad on the same shift. Sistyn looks more comfortable then goes deer in the headlights in 1 on 1 situations. Bazin must want to go young on D - I can see Lyles not dressing, but Furlong? His defensive steadiness is need, IMHO. McGrath has potential, he will be fun to watch. Other than, McGrath, Pendenza and Arnold, UML has zero "jam" up front.

Thoughts on BC (and I am a fan of BC): Do not think they have the high end talent like previous years. Bigger but much slower; BC use to be able to skate the opposition out of the arena. For the first time in years, I am of the opinion that BC has several only average skaters. I do not see a national championship team. Matheson is a beast, not playing like frosh, and that why he was constantly on the ice in 3rd period of Friday's 1-0 game; plays with a huge edge. Gaudreau can be invisible for periods and then bring you out of your seat. On Friday, Haynes is a stiff and can't play hockey, then goes 2-1-3 on Sunday - what do I know? Nothing! Whitney is the most complete player on the team. A two man forecheck by BC on the penalty kill!!! - and still controlling play??? Comeback against Amherst, outplayed against UML - BC knows how to win.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

Whitney is the most complete player on the team.

Hmmmm... this one has to draw a comment. With the most complete player in the league on his own team (Arnold) and maybe Mullane 2nd, Whitney is not really in that same planet as either in terms of "complete player" type characterization. He could score a bucketload of goals this year from the point of the PP and have Mullane and Gaudreau feeing him pucks, however.

I believe Furlong is nursing an injury. Agree about Houk, he had another bad penalty on Sunday. Late in the first period he knocked Gaudreau on his back side after the whistle. Instead of Lowell going into the locker room down 1-0 BC gets a late PP goal and the period ends 2-0.

Houk's made a season of bad penalties. In 5 games.

Sinitsyn is still getting a feel for the game. His play has been tons better since the UVM and Denver games. Have to remember, the kid hasn't played hockey in a year +. Houk definitely needs to stop with the penalties. I do like his aggressiveness on the offensive end (he's negated a couple of icings by beating the other team's D to the dot).

The biggest issue right now is that the lines are not staying consistent. Everyone on this team has now played in at least one game with the exception of Lyles (good news there) and Robbins. Furlong played fairly well most of last year but hit a wall towards the back quarter of the season. He and Eiserman are solid 7 and 8s on the back end.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

Well NU was swept this weekend by Merrimack, and PC split up at Vermont. BC won Friday night at Maine, while UMass won their first of the year (in league) in OT against UNH. BC hosts UMass tomorrow, while Maine hosts UNH.

So Lowell could be in last place in the league tomorrow if Maine can win, but Lowell will have at least 1 game in hand on everyone, and as many as four on NU (who has 5 points in 7 games now).

NU tends to do that a lot, which is great if they win most of their games, but they never seem to pull that off.

Regardless of the UNH/Maine result this afternoon, this has to be a minimum of three points or even a sweep next weekend at the Tsongas. Maine will be comes to town a wounded fish and Lowell simply has to finish them off.

Very interested to see the result of the UMA game to see if there is any letdown on the BC side with a charged up UMA squad from a quality win against UNH.

Vermont is making a serious case that they may be a low seed in the playoff this year.

Impressive sweep by Merrimack, we will see how real they may be. While only two HE games before Thanksgiving; it's against BU and @BC.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

Well I'll admit, I never thought going into the Maine weekend that it would be #9 in Hockey East vs #10. Wow.
