Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

Ok, time to weigh in. Someone named Bruce replied over on Ice is Life that we're all a bunch of old, angry guys and he seems perfectly fine with the lower-class student cheers. I for one do not like to see cheers that many of us actually created and used to lead like the "see ya..." one get bastardized. One thing we've always taken pride in is that our fans never stooped to the level of Amherst and other schools with classless cheers and/or profanity, that we would actually police ourselves and not let things get out of hand. The time may be now to nip this.

I love that tons of students finally go to the games, love the signs, love the costumes, love the energy and the noise. But the over the top bull$(#$ cheers for no reason (fine on that once in awhile instance where it is truly on outrageous, blatant time to chant it) or the revised "see ya..." chat need to go. Several years ago, the Tsongas Tstormtrooper ushers would be all over the 25 or so of us who actually used to cheer and heaven forbid, say s u c k. We had to educate them on what a college hockey atmosphere was and that we were trying to create one. Now we actually have one thanks to the efforts of UML and the great turn out now by the student body. Unfortunately there have been some signs that our fans are going down the route of Amherst, a place that I have vowed never to visit again as it is outright hostile and vulger.

Perhaps it's time for some better enforcement of that announcement at the beginning of each game to get things back in balance again. Reset the ground rules so that the newcomers know them and don't cross the boundaries. It would be great if the new blogs like HawkSquawk and 123 can spread the word to tone it down, especially HawkSquawk which is student created and run. It would be much appreciated.

We'll see how things go Friday night. I hoping for a sold out Tsongas, an energized crowd, and an exciting game. Hopefully the word will get around to cut out the bull cheers and keep things in check. If not, I'm not beyond a few well placed emails, phone calls, and personal conversations with some of the powers to perhaps do a little enforcement. But I do know that a fair number have been grumbling about this including long time ticket holders and donors.

So go Riverhawks and let's keep it clean!

This is always going to happen when you get a group of new people. Sadly, people suck... even our people. We remember who they are, but we don't want to... many of us never have to deal with it in the adult world. I don't care if its heavy-handed but the school is the only leverage we have against this type of behavior... we can't police it on our own. Just as long as we can get the staff to agree to be judicious but not capricious.

In the end, I hope it doesn't become "the old people" vs. "the young people"... but stuff like this has popped up any time we've started to get good long before our recent attendance figures. There is power in the crude, this is why they use it... 'cause they don't have anything else.

----

I am actually surprised and a bit bothered that more people don't post on here during our run-up. On the other hand, who knows what we'd get if they did.

Old or young, the students have to realize that profanity is never going to be a good base line cheer at a hockey game where it is not just the students. Students become alumni and alumni then have children which they want to bring to the game. I would want to see there they draw the "old" vs "young" line.

It is cheers like Sit down ***** which keeps Lowell off Home TV coverage.

Edit: it sucks that my 100th post is about this... :(

BTW, how atrocious are those "replica" jerseys they sent out with the season tickets? I didn't know that Lowell's colors were blue, white, and orange.
Mine showed up today. The might be a bit less red than normal but don't think blatantly so.

Happy it's time for hockey again. Listened to the exhibition and it's tough to make any predictions from that game. I'm really interested to see how the Vermont game goes next weekend before the team heads out west. Will also be interesting to see how the team does with the higher expectations, how the returning players improved during the offseason, and how the new players will fit in. Really looking forward to being able to get to the Tsongas this season and see a few games. How do the new concourse boxes, restaurant choices, and other changes look?

Go River Hawks!

From a student who has seen everything since the Garden trip in '08. Seems like more students that show up, the less refined they are. Apparantly they're saying that the Sit Down **** was used last year. I been always using the See Ya chant. I'm gonna bring this up but staying "neutral" on the overall matter.

On the brighter side of things, thanks to the Mack Hawks are 6th going into the opener.

Just signed up for the yearly pass. The streaming site looks much improved this year!

Apparantly they're saying that the Sit Down **** was used last year.

Perhaps they were the ones who started using it?

Either way, last year or not, it is still not a cheer which they should be doing. Bad habits are bad.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

I sit very close to the student section and can definitely say the "See ya b****" was not a thing done last year (unless it was just a few). I'll echo that it needs to be cut real fast before that crap starts to become a new "tradition." I think the students were great last year, showed up in droves for all the games, not even just the big ones. Hope the students continue to show up and be loud, just hope they don't lower themselves to Amherst-level antics.

Team looked great on Saturday. Very impressed with Pendenza's two goals, he'll be a force again this year for sure.

That second goal was pure sniper type... goalie never had a chance.

Reminded me of Scott Wilson's goal at BU last year when he just wound up from the blue line and a laser beam went through everything.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

I wonder if this is being done to facilitate games for TV during the lockout?
I believe in some cases it's related to TV, but I also think it's to allow fans more time to get to the Friday games. I know teams out west have been doing this for years, (7:30 Fri, 7:00 Sat)

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

Their marketing department never stops.

I used to be a UNH season ticket holder for two years. At the end of the season, I went to a few UML games and we had to make the change!

Ticket holders get treated great at UML compared to UNH. UNH sends you tickets in the mail with no letter. Just your tickets in an envelope. There are no extra perks for buying season tickets to UNH. There used to be a waiting list to become a UNH season ticket holder but there isn't one anymore. They treat it as if you are lucky to become a season ticket holder there.

There are never any promotional games at UNH. Scott Donnelly, from UML, has been wonderful in my transition to rooting for the GOOD GUYS! My wife and I couldn't be more excited for Friday. So excited for our first season as STH for UML. Here's to many more! Section 106, Row 14, Seats 9 & 10! GO UML!

PS: I left all the bad luck at the Whittemore Center!

Thanks for the kind words, and I definitely agree. Scott, his marketing team and everyone involved really are making a difference. Welcome to the Light. The Dark Side may have cookies but we have beer.

Welcome from the folks over in 116 with the cowbell and ratchet to make noise. Agree the crew doing marketing and managing tix/promos are the tops. Been around since mid1980s. These guys are hands down the best around!

Welcome from a section over in 105, you have probably noticed me as one of the few in my section who stand for the entire starting lineups (even the evil ones) :). Scott has been great, even answering my stupid questions from when I was a student and helped greatly to transition from the Blue Fan Group student tickets to a season ticket holder.

I'm sitting in Row 17 of 107, right on the aisle. Please stop by and say hi. I'm one of the loud ones. ;)
