Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread II

Great win ... because every win is a great win. Kinda blase for the first period, and times in the third. When is this team going to play 60?

I honestly don't remember Hockey East being this ... messy. 4 points separate 1st from 6th (not including today's games, which will give Lowell a game in hand on all of those teams (ties are what we want).

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread II

Well, today's results were probably the best we could hope for, as Merrimack tied 2-2 at Providence, and BC tied 4-4 with UNH.

Standings as of now:
MC 21 GP - 27
BC 21 - 26
UNH 21 - 25
BU 20 - 24
PC 21 - 24
Lowell 20 - 22

Game in hand on almost all the teams ahead of them, and currently owning the tie-breaker over BU and PC.

So ... in case you were wondering how important the BU series is... ;)

All Lowell's remaining games are against teams only a few points ahead of them in the standings. Take care of business
and they will vault high in the standings along with their PWR ranking. Today's games gave them a slight bump up to 14th.

Should have made that call, Monty ;)

Actually, how big were those games that BU and Lowell had at Alfond this month. A missed opportunity by Lowell in gaining points along with BU taking three points off a no-goal for Maine in the third on Friday and Saturday's potting of the OT winner with four seconds left. Even with the worse case scenario on Friday at BU, Lowell still wins the season series and the tiebreaker if the home teams hold serve. Of course, any points taken on Friday put the pressure squarely on BU. This has to be a game of 6000+ at the Tsongas and I really don't think that's going to be an issue.

As far as last night, the boys really answered a significant call. A sweep was needed to remain competitive for these unclaimed home-ice spots. Definitely wasn't the prettiest of affairs but that lockdown defense they had in the final two minutes was very impressive. Then again, winning ugly against a pesky team like Amherst is sometimes required. [Amherst] didn't leave anything on the table, that was for sure. Very decent crowd of 5500 went home happy.

The preliminary round of the playoffs have begun; every game will have that playoff feel and would love to see that atmosphere on Saturday night.

The game of the week has to be BC/Merrimack and the good news is that's it's on TV. Quite possibly, that could be the biggest RS game as a D-I school as a win would give the Warriors the tiebreaker over BC and UNH. The result of that contest will determine our odds of catching Merrimack the following weekend. BU is the only thing on my menu until Saturday night.

If Providence doesn't get home ice, those six league ties are going to come back to haunt them. UNH goes to Vermont; don't look past this series as it will provide for some very interesting results on the final standings.

PC let one slip away today. Up 2-1 with about 5 minutes to go in the 3rd the Friars went on a 5 minute PP. They proceeded to give up a 2 on 1 to the Warriors for the game tieing SHG.

Bottom line is we are in position to take points... Keep winning and everything will take care of itself.

Any win from here on out will be against a TUC, which Lowell desperately needs help with. Each opponent is ahead of them in HE. Wins are great for multiple reasons...

Congrats to DA!
Hockey East ‏@hockey_east
MEN: @AthRepublic Player of the Week: Derek Arnold (UML) Arnold had 5 points (3g,2a) in a series sweep of UMass, including Sat's game winner
Also, a nice article about Pendenza in Hockey's Future.

I had a great time at the Tsongas on Saturday night. I brought my dog (along with my girlfriend and a UMass fan and his wife) and got to meet Monty's pooches.

The game was nothing to write home about but sweeping Amherst two years in a row is nice.

3 games in 5 days coming up. Carr has to start one of those games right? I was really surprised he didn't play on Saturday.

3 in 5, 5 games in 9 ... no way does Carr not get at least one start, probably 2.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread II

As much as I would love to get 4pts this weekend, it’s incredibly challenging to get that in any weekend of Hockey East play. Granted, Lowell has done it previously and yes, BU looks to be vulnerable… but its still BU, with loads of talent and frankly Jack (in my eyes) is still a good coach. My opinion is, splitsville.

Looking at facts, and marrying the upcoming schedule I see both Carr and Connor in net this weekend. As I have written before, I am a Carr supporter and thought he could get the job done… however he has been below mediocre this season. I thought with Connor down, Carr would step up. And while he did look good against MC, he was not as sharp against Maine. Granted the team in front of him was not playing to its potential… but, he did not seem like the old Carr.
It pains me to say this, but with him in net makes Lowell exposed in the series. Because of that, I see splitsville.

Some Fact
Carr Total Games:
.897 Save percentage
2.79 GAA

Carr Conference only:
.889 Save percentage - Last in conference
3.06 GAA

Hellebuyck has maintained a .950 save rate and a 1.32 save percentage in his last 10 appearances

One other cool fact I saw on hockeyeastonline.com: UMass Lowell's freshmen have accounted for 17 goals and 30 assists in UMass Lowell's last 15 games, led by freshman Ryan McGrath (5-11-16) and freshman Christian Folin (3-12-15).

To be perfectly honest I don't see why we can't ride hellebuyck... Now the smart thing would be to keep Carr playing occasionally in case Connor goes down. I haven't heard about Connor having carr's conditioning and Connor came off of a month off.

Right now, I think you should ride with the best option the rest of the way out unless Connor needs a rest

Oh I agree with you, however I dont think Bazin is on the same page. With the undisclosed injury on Connor, who knows how much time Carr will see. With 5 games in 9 days... I think we will see Carr 2x, once being this weekend.

Note: On a previous interview, I remember that Bazin mentioned that a backup should plan on starting 8-10 games a season. Maybe Connor does start the way through?

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread II

Going off of the What-If Calculator, I see the season ending like this:

Boston College 36
Merrimack 34
New Hampshire 32
Mass.-Lowell 30
Boston University 30
Providence 30
Vermont 22
Maine 21
Massachusetts 18
Northeastern 17

This would give Lowell BU at home in the Quarterfinals as Lowell would win the 3 team tiebreaker with a 4-2 combined record over BU and PC, BU would have a 3-2-1 record and PC would bring up the rear with a 1-4-1 record. I'd like to see Lowell sweep the last weekend, but they play as bad, if not worse at the Coffin than they do at the Volpe. And how sad it is to see Amherst and NU bringing up the rear. This would also pose an interesting 1st round matchup between Maine and BC especially after what Maine did to them this year.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread II

With Lowell having a game at Merrimack next Sunday (3/3) ... just thought I'd pass along that Fuddrucker's will be serving draft beers by then.

Does this mean we're going to Fuddrucker's for an "extended lunch"? ;)
