UMaine Offseason...Belly Up to the Barr Boys

Winning will bring atmosphere back. Hard to compare present arena with the much smaller arena pre 92 . Much louder back then.

Yes, but you have to admit in the now Alfond that place was hopping and was a ACE in the hole when opposing teams came...they knew once the crowd was into it...it was basically a mad house

Attendance has been lousy for many years. Other than the student section the atmosphere is horrendous, but that's been true since we expanded the place in '92.

Well my point was that out of conference games have mostly been poor attendance no matter who, worse than any home HE game. OK no need to go back to day 1, but generally in the recent past, and no I didnt research that just call it an observation having been to most of the games.

Wally is spot on. My ears rang after some games just like the indoor rock concerts before decibels were restricted.

Wish I had your optimism. I remember during the '93 title season one of my professors described the "new" Alfond as a mortician's dream come true - so many lifeless bodies in one place. Aside from the students and a few boisterous fans, the atmosphere sucks. Granted, I haven't been to a game in person since before the pandemic, but I doubt it has changed that much.

The year when Barr was hired was meh. He pretty much had Reds team. Last year got better as the season went on. That's why I quoted your post in bold because honestly it has changed alot and your perspective is off.

Really? The fans are more passionate now than when we went two years between home losses and were national champions? I guess that hasn't translated well to television or radio broadcasts.

I didn't say any of that. I said attendance is getting better and the atmosphere is improving.

Sorry buddy, but your dead wrong...being at the games compared to listening to them is way different...and although times have been tough the last 8 years or so the atmosphere in the early '93 to 2002 were high pitch. You have your opinion and that's fine...that's what this and other forums are about...times we agree and times we don't...plain and simple.

Why even bother talking about how great the past was and blah blah blah. It was good move on. Times change. There is now hope for improvements since the last 12 yrs or so. We still have a great fan base, winning will fill the alfond every game.

Your right....forward....positive and things are looking alot better and with that attendance will spike accordingly to the teams success....like anything else...nothing stays the same...go Maine.

Pre 92 was no accoustic treatment of the walls in Alfond. Just hard, smooth sound reflecting walls. It was borderline annoying if you ask me. The improvements dampened that chit a bit but the atmosphere was always great in Alfond even after the expansion. What Wally said, winning will improve things dramatically.

And beating BC with all their high draft picks from this year:) this fall.:)

As far as the atmosphere is concerned, I'd say that it's not as good as it was years ago. The fans don't chant, and even the students seem to have forgotten most of the chants. Last year they came up with "F... You BC" which doesn't belong at all. I always appreciated that there weren't all the "You Suck" chants at Alfond. I hope the students can get their act together, maybe come up with a couple new creative chants, without the foul language.

Here's a couple of stories in the BDN that might interest Maine fans;

The clean language from the students was always a hallmark of Alfond - thanks to Shawn engaging with the students. It brought the whole building into the chants (townies with families won't be cussin').

Wally - of course - is right. Winning will change things. And don't put too much stock into what Tippecanoe says about anything pre- and post- 1993. He was "on the team" then. Rolleyes.

Bruce Springsteen song called “ Glory days” was written about us old folks specifically Tica in this case . Nothing can be better than your memories of the old days. If you were around when Maine beat PC to get the frozen four You would understand why some are stuck back in the “ Glory Days” . But I think most of us can appreciate what’s happening now and I can see Barr bringing Alfond back to life. It won’t be the same but it be will fun to watch. Not much of a summer so far but I can wait until October to see what happens : )

Yep, Maine over PC and the noise that night will never be forgotten. The place just erupted like never before or since for that matter. If memory serves I think PC was unbeatable going into that double overtime. What a dogfight that game was.

Pellerin blast, Robitaille backhand. Two moments I’ll never forget.
