UMaine Hockey 23 - 24: The Barr Crawl to Glory!!!

I don't have a subscription to the BDN, so I can't read this. I believe Sam Duerr and Ben Barr went to the same high school. Perhaps this article mentions that?

Sorry. It says that the younger brother had verbally committed to Maine and looked forward to playing with Sam. Obviously didn't work out. I suspect he won't be the only commit who moves on somewhere else. With Dalton coming in, there won't be much room for new D and EP has several 03 D listed for next year.

Anyone here sit behind the maine bench?
Curious if barr is a yeller or cusses at the boys.

I am right behind him. He talks to them a fair amount, especially during commercial breaks, but I can't hear what he is saying. There's a pane of glass and I am a few rows back.

Someone I know was sitting back there saturday claims he was throwing lots of f bombs and more at the boys. Lol
Found it hard to believe they could hear him that well sitting back there.
Not that some of the players might not deserve it, doesn't seem like his style from his public persona anyway.

Jeez, you’re reminding me of the time Smith took out Ben Bishop

I seem to remember that, but it ain't like Maine has been composed of choirboys over the years, either...

(Prestin Ryan, Brandon Walsh, Joey Diamond all come immediately to mind, but they always were screwed by the refs. ;P)

I could never stand Walsh…I remember a game at Northeastern when he elbowed a guy in the head just as they were about to pass the stantion (end of the glass) at the end of the player bench…the guy’s head stayed stuck to the glass and his body pendulumed out, full speed…the guy could have been paralyzed and I lost all respect for Brendan, the Boston city cop

Prestin I loved

diamond was more of a mouth…he knew just what to say to get an opposing D man to throw him into the Dman’s own goalie AND get called for a penalty…so maine would get to “run the goalie” AND either get a powerplay or matching minors…it was a win for maine every time. UND’s Brett Hextall comes to mind. (And I never did see the kick at Lowell. I was at the opposite end of the rink…had I seen a genuine kick, I’d have lost respect for Diamond as well.

I figured since Im down and out at home with Covid, may as well take the time to update the recruiting spreadsheet again for the first time in almost a year. I drew the list of players from Heisenberg's, and if he didn't list a year he expects the player to arrive, I did my own guessing to fill it in, mostly based on their age. For the player's current team, I went off of whatever Elite Prospects had listed as their current team.

Players are grouped by expected arrival year first, signified by the color, and within each year/color, they are sorted by DOB, with the oldest player on top and descending to the youngest.

Looking at the sheet, and with the age and state of the roster, I expect a fair number of these commitments to fall thru, simply because I don't forsee a need for this many players, especially up front, unless there's a mass exodus from the program I'm not expecting. As always, if you find anything wrong with my sheet, please let me know so I can fix it.

Good info....my take is and just imo...goaltending could be a major concern next season...get well...and again thxs.

It will be interesting. All 9 D have eligibility, so there will only be space if Brazeale goes pro or someone goes in the portal. On forward, Poision is done and Houle and Breen could leave or use their covid years. Maine might see a couple of last years freshman go into the portal if they are unhappy with ice. Unless the two transfer rule changes guys like Niemo are stuck. Kuzma looks the pick of the forwards but he has 2 more years of junior eligibility. A strong season might make Maine more attractive to transfers as well. I agree that goaltender might be the biggest challenge. A transfer goaltender seems likely.

Breazeale has been to two NHL development camps (ARZ/LAK) so I could very easily see a team getting enamored with his skating and puck handling ability and plucking him.

Isn't Berzins coming in next year as well? He seemed to have decent hype before the NCAA issue this year.

Yes he is coming in this coming season...he was deemed a top recruit until the NCAA debacle...one minute he's suspended and then the next he's ok to play. My take is that next season most likely you'll have Bojia with some experience and Berzins coming in...not sure if they add another recruit to the mix...plus could Ostman come back for a 5th season..(?)..knowing full well he has gone to Seattle's prospect camp...and he could sign as a free agent also....hopefully down the line the Staff can lure a top netminder recruit...all in all it will be interesting.

I think the thought is that a guy like Ryder Shea can be a top guy when he comes to Orono.

Agree that Boija/Berzins should be an effective duo next year. But having options for Ostman to return, Szyszka coming early (think he was due for 2025?), and even a transfer guy coming in should have us in a good spot until Shea arrives.

Continuing the tradition of Maine being a high-end destination for goalie development should always be the priority.

Yes on Shea in 2025...next season could be very interesting...depending on the experience Boija gets this season, and with the potential of Berzins...and potential is just that...on paper...college hockey is a big step from USHL...and that is not a slap on Berzins....and do you think Ostman comes back which would make for possibly too many to get the reps for Berzin..???..as I said before it will be interesting ..but this season is the topic...getting into the top 4 of Hockey East...trip to Boston...and a chance to get into the NCAA's.....GO MAINE..!!!..hockey is fun again @Alfond and for the State....

Didnt berzins play for his world jr team, I’d think how he did in that tourney could give an indication of how good he could be in HE

Patriks Berzins, world junior stats (Latvia):
6 games played
record 2 wins 4 losses
2.47 gaa
.914 save percentage

A strong skater with good command of his edges, Bērziņš excels when the puck is worked around the zone. He has good attention to detail in terms of his positioning, and rarely falls behind the speed of play

He played on a lousy team that was shutout in each of their first 3 games. Not a bad save percentage with a team that didnt play a whole lot of defense I would guess

He did fine for Lativa, which was not a strong team in the WJC...I do have high hopes for him...but again it's on the ice next season that counts...but he's a solid recruit...imo.
