UMaine Black Bears, 2017-2018 season, is this Reds last stand?

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2017-2018 season, is this Reds last stand?

Maybe you and others missed it, but Maine actually scored 11 goals last weekend. I think UMD will definitely be the best team Maine plays all year. Maine needs to win against the bad teams, bottom line.

I had low expectations for Hockey East this year and even with those it has been worse than I expected. Could Maine, UNH, BU, and BC all miss NCAA's?
You think that UMD is the BEST TEAM Maine will play...? Wow, don't count out Quinnipiac, BU, Providence and the rest of Hockey East...you might think that Hockey East is dead in the water but all League games will be tough...no matter what the standings say. If Maine continues to play cold/hot...hot/cold and has no offence and the D stay's as is with no improvement....then a 9th place finish will be gravy and most likely 10th/11th will be fitting for this team as they have played. There's NO LEADERSHIP on the ice to speak of what so ever to date...and NO signs there will be either {sadly}.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2017-2018 season, is this Reds last stand?

Maine faces a slow starting team in the River Hawks this weekend (0-4 in Hockey East play). It will be interesting to see how many goals Maine scores. Is this one of the teams Maine should sweep or split against?
This team...Maine, is just what the Doctor ordered for UML to start righting there ship after a bad/slow start...plus as we all know the road woes will continue....it's a factor that Maine has no confidence on the road and WHY should it change.

I don't see why anyone would pick anything but a lowell sweep. When was the last road win 2 years ago? Be great if Maine can get a win this weekend but I sure wouldn't predict that.

There are two problems I see next weekend: the first is that Maine has been dreadful on the road the last few years on the road. It would be nice to get the monkey off their back straightaway. The other problem, and I think the bigger one, is that UML desperately needs these two games. They're off to a pretty bad start and for both hockey east and NCAA's need a sweep. I really think Bazin is the best coach in Hockey East and I'm sure he will have his guys fired up.

I think having Maine on the ledger at home this weekend could be a double edged sword for the River Hawks. I'm sure they are well aware of Maine's struggles away from Alfond, so if they don't sweep it could amplify their potential confidence issues and shaky start if they become the the team that lets Maine beat them in their barn.

Bazin is one of the top Coaches in the country and in Hockey East also...he knows how to use his overall team talent into the way he knows they can play...he may not have the best talent at times but he knows how to make them click as a unit...he'll have them more then ready this weekend.

Expected them to lose worse than this to Duluth so.....they're bad but maybe they don't suck quite so bad? Feel a little better after the last 2 weeks than I did after the Uconn weekend.

OK, but Maine hockey is going nowhere, let's face it... This is just another Red team that won't even come close to contending for an NCAA berth.

There are some posters on this thread who still harbor hope -and I wish that i could still do that- but the Gendron era has been a train-wreck, and it won't get any better anytime soon.

I wish that I hadn't called for Timmy's head on a pike, even as late as I did... Red is a far worse recruiter, and we all might be 6 feet under before Maine gets a sniff of the NCAAs again.

This as close as it gets to rock-bottom, yet again. Might as well abandon the hockey program right now, and spend the money on the campus infrastructure.

Doesn't make sense to spend money on infrastructure. They can't take care of the stuff that they currently have. I've never seen a major campus so poorly maintained.

I am probably the only person on this forum who didn't want Tim dismissed. Tim would also be struggling for talented recruits if he were still at Maine. The college game has completely changed in the last 10 - 15 years. However, in my opinion he was able to relate well to his players and got the most out of them. I feel he is much smarter than Gendron and his record would be better than Gendron's if he were still coaching Maine. Of course it's pure speculation because we will never know for sure. The current team just may develop as the season progresses and achieve more than 10 wins. If they don't develop and improve I feel Gendron needs to be held accountable. If they do improve then he deserves some credit. Either way, this is not a championship team as he boastfully proclaimed.

Call me crazy or worse, but I don't believe the current recruiting or player skill is the problem at all. I don't think they reflect some of what we have seen or some expect for a poor season. Its the coaching! Red is old school, I hear he yells and uses all language directed at players during practice. He seems to believe in punishment to motivate. Is that how top coaches succeed? Id be surprised if that was so. Granted it is a tough love business, but not sure thats how to gain players respect.

Not to mention his system and form of play is not working.

I believe he lost the team at Notre dame season 1 and has never got it back

that's why they need to spend money on infrastructure... to maintain it

I actually think 2 years ago was closer to rock bottom. And while I dibt didagree that this regimes chances of success are over, what can we do about it right now? Nothin, so I'm just gonna hope they play better than my really low expectations and look for signs in the young kids that te next guy will be able to get good hockey out of em

I would personally agree with this. I don't think the talent level is an issue, nor even the amount of effort the guys give. I think the dump and chase is a problem, as is Gendron's general style. I remember I saw the team at Merrimack and sat right behind the bench, and he just looked like a spastic and had no general control of the situation. I think a new voice and a new style is needed, because I do think there is talent on the team.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2017-2018 season, is this Reds last stand?

Tralmarks is the only Maine player who could generate any room on the ice. They make every goalie look like Dryden in his prime. Right in the bread basket or off the boards. It's frustrating to watch. They played well defensively, Swayman was good.
Highlight of the night, meeting Biddco ;)
That was amoung the many highlights of my trip :D
Congratulations to the Bulldogs for sweeping a team on their home ice. Not an easy thing to do. Biddco, hope you enjoyed your visit to Maine and have a safe trip home.
Thank you! I loved my visit to Maine. My only regret is that I didn't make it longer. Did not get enough time at Acadia! I will highly recommend any fan go and visit. Maine is a beautiful state and the arena is super cool.

Oh and thanks to everyone who suggested places and things to do. Appreciate it. I'll return the favor for fans who are able to visit Duluth next year.

Maine fans were saying you guys were louder than the rest of the building. Good luck to UMD the rest of the way. Too bad you didn't get down to the coast. Its really special.

You guys got out of here just in time, we got whacked by a storm. Power is out every where, trees down so some roads aren't passable. My road looks like we won't have power for a few days, many trees across lines and across the road.

That's nice to hear! We pride ourselves on being loud and all the fans we met were very nice. One lady even showed me a picture she took of me at the Frozen Four with my crazy UMD gear. I can't imagine what the place was like in the old days...what a great place you have.

I did spend time at Acadia but didn't have time to go back and do more hiking near sand beach. We unfortunately had some trouble leaving, we had to spend the night in Newark as the weather cancelled many flights. My friend had to take a bus to Boston to catch her flight. But now I'm home and very happy.

I definitely think that the lack of talent is 99% of the on-ice problem. I see effort, but no truly skilled players. Been this way with all of Red's recruits. This program is complete toast for the foreseeable future.

Dr. Maine, the cure for the common hockey team.

Lowell sweeps.
