ummmm. you realize of course that uhn sux though, don't you?

Not as much as Maine obviously.

UConn beats Lowell, Umass beat Notre Dame, Maine gets smoked. Looks like HE coaches poll was right. Hopefully its a packed house tonight, Maine will need all the energy it can get. Why Cochrane was on the big sheet last night was beyond me. 3 penalties? He can't keep up but he isn't the only Dman that was exposed. Maine is still too slow.

Is Muehlbauer hurt? That was my guess why he played. It will be nice when Herner is available for selection in a few games.

Split is really must here. Willing to chalk it up to a tough night on the road if they can come out and play well at home.

Get swept and whatever hope I had for 16-17 is probably ovah.

Agree with this. Won tonight and sweep next weekend then you end first half .500 after what is been a reasonably difficult schedule. If they slip to four games under .500 it will be tough to get back there.

I didn't see last night's game so it's hard for me to comment on it too much but one thing I will say is that the game mattered much for UNH than it did Maine and I think tonight the opposite is true.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

We will see what the team is made of tonight. I think most of us realize this isn't a NCAA or even a player in HE tourneys but it would be nice to show they can bounce back from a miserable night. I expect Rob to be better and the small rink size should snub the UHN forwards up a wee bit. Penalties will be a key as will Defense. Wish Maine had a goal scorer. I'll be there wearing a 99 natl championship Tee shirt :)

Beautiful 4th goal by Kelleher between the defenders legs. Cheap shot by Michel on Kelleher after he scores. Once again, Maine's penalties are putting them at a disadvantage. Zero points on the weekend for Maine. They will probably sweep AIC, but won't earn any Hockey East points.

I wouldn't bet on them sweeping aic. How is there power play? This team is headed for 12th in hockey east. Nothing changes, we see the same **** show week in and week out.

Inside joke with some history behind it.;)

Haha, I get the joke - I guess the bold in the quote doesn't really stand out - but I was referring to his first New Hampshire reference when he (mistakenly, I presume) actually did type UNH...

I saw your description of the Kelleher goal below. I'm at DU/CC and only followed the box score, but how does he end up with a goal AND a charging the goalie penalty on the same play?? Thanks.

Big sweep for UNH, who will hopefully be able to build some confidence and surprise us all against the meat of their schedule in the second half...

Kelleher received a penalty but as I recall it did not involve charging the goal tender. The one I saw was in the corner.

That makes more sense - and re-checking the box score the first Kelleher penalty is now listed as a slash. So it must have just been recorded incorrectly...

It looked like Kelleher gave McGovern a good jab/slash with his stick as he skated through the crease after he scored. Michel then went after him and gave him a cross-check to the head resulting in a major. Kelleher was called for slashing and roughing on that play

Brutal loss for Maine. The better team on the ice didn't win Saturday. Vesey missed two open nets. And as much as I hate to say it, because it is not my style, one of the worst officiated games I have ever seen. I am not sure the officials themselves know what they called tonight. Regardless this is a game Maine should have won. UNH's power play is a spectacle to behold, easily the best in hockey east. Very reminiscent of last years 3-3 tie at Alfond where Maine completely outplayed UNH and couldn't convert for the win.

It was one of the cheapest plays I've ever seen, and incredibly classless. It was unfortunate Michel or someone else couldn't get a good shot on
Kelleher.

The refs had an absolute shocker tonight. At one point the PP's were 7-1 UNH. The first penalty that led to UNH's first 5X3 was a complete dive and the referee bought it hook, line, and sinker. The penalty that led to UNH's second 5X3 was a clean hit and Michel got whistled. There were other poor calls and noncalls, but to some degree that is life in hockey east. I thought tonight was a lot worse than usual though.

With all that being said, Tirone was excellent. I thought he was rubbish last year but he has turned himself into a decent goalie. Bub wasn't at his best and I think he would want the second and fourth goals back. Maine had a lot better of the play and goaltending was the difference.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Tirone was the difference during the game as he came through with clutch saves.

Odd looking goalie style wise, Very aggressive but he does the job against Maine. If he flops that much against a team with goal scorers he is going to pay the price.

Some of the penalties I couldn't see from my seat but the ones I could see look like penalties to me, blaming the refs for something thats been happening for years with this team is bush league. This team may have better players on it but they play the same way they have since Red has been here.
