Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Odd looking goalie style wise, Very aggressive but he does the job against Maine. If he flops that much against a team with goal scorers he is going to pay the price.

Some of the penalties I couldn't see from my seat but the ones I could see look like penalties to me, blaming the refs for something thats been happening for years with this team is bush league. This team may have better players on it but they play the same way they have since Red has been here.
Tirone has Maine's number...he just picks up his game versus Maine and no matter how he does it he gets away with some odd ways of goaltending...it turns out it works for him and lifts his team and they gain confidence. Some of the penalty's last night went the way Maine fans did not want to see...but you are so right in blaming the Refs for this outcome is B.S. --- UNH buried there chances and Maine whiffed or just plain shot wide of open nets....it comes down to that's hockey. You can't give a team (UNH) chance after chance on the PP, especially when they are scoring on it @ 21% clip. This is a 5-9-3 team...no matter how they try to spin it each and every game.

You better hope Ben Guite isn't reading this thread..."how soon they forget all I did for them" :(

Don't worry the cheapest play ever was spitting into the crowd. You guys still hold the crown

To quote Dennis Green: "We are who are record says we are."

Maine is #32 in SOS and has 5 wins. Still think the ceiling is 12-14. I don't see things getting much of any better, and I don't see Red getting another extension.

Another Extension...he got one last season, 2 years added to his ending 4 year deal...so he's under contract after this season for 2 more years.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

It was one of the cheapest plays I've ever seen, and incredibly classless. It was unfortunate Michel or someone else couldn't get a good shot on
Kelleher.

The refs had an absolute shocker tonight. At one point the PP's were 7-1 UNH. The first penalty that led to UNH's first 5X3 was a complete dive and the referee bought it hook, line, and sinker. The penalty that led to UNH's second 5X3 was a clean hit and Michel got whistled. There were other poor calls and noncalls, but to some degree that is life in hockey east. I thought tonight was a lot worse than usual though.

With all that being said, Tirone was excellent. I thought he was rubbish last year but he has turned himself into a decent goalie. Bub wasn't at his best and I think he would want the second and fourth goals back. Maine had a lot better of the play and goaltending was the difference.
I think you can put Prestin Ryan in here for the shot he took on a BC player after scoring on Maine. 1st few seasons Prestin Ryan was out of control...then he became a real player...talented d-man with a wicked shot from the point and bone rattling hip checks that could be heard around the Alfond.

I think he knows that but what he is saying is this what Red brings to the table.

I hope you aren't insinuating that I believe Maine lost because of the officials. I think one thing all members of this forum can agree on is Maine's penalty problems. Additionally I am pretty sure that I made "thoughtful" comments prior to the weekend series that eluded to all of the things that eventually became Maine's undoing this weekend. So clearly any insinuation that I may believe the officials "lost" the game for Maine is, in and of itself, "bush league".

I guess from your seat you didn't see the interference hit on Michel at center ice? Any Maine fan knows that is a penalty because we see it a minimum of once a game from one of our guys. How about the high stick on Holway that required him to remove the defenders stick from his face with one hand while attempting to play the puck with his other. Or on two separate occasions tackling Fossier while skating with the puck. After re-watching the game my thoughts on these should be penalties remain the exactly the same. All of these plays occurred in the 3rd period after both of UNH's 5 on 3's which I still can not see where the Hamilton high stick came from or the Michel's elbowing which was legal. Regardless, the one thing I can't figure out is why some UMaine fans are so intent on being derogatory and negative towards other UMaine fans. Doesn't really make sense when we all want UMaine to be successful and we are all members of a forum to become more educated about the team that we all love and support so much.

Did I quote you somewhere?

Was it me or him you were referring to in your post? The last sentence of my post said that goaltending was the difference. That doesn't excuse the referees for an absolute horrible performance though. Honestly, I wasn't even upset about the no-calls on UNH(except for when the guy hit Hamilton after the refs had blown play dead when Housakos got a penalty in the second.) I hope Hockey East reviews the tape and the referees get a few weekends off.

I'm guessing unh fans could come up some stuff maine players did that wasn't called also.

You could call penalties on every play in hockey. That is why most games are pretty even as far as PP's and that is the way it should be. To have a 7-1 differential is completely ridiculous.

No, that can't be. All of the so called "bad calls" were all against Maine. Penalties have been an issue for Maine for the past few years. Singling this game out as being unfair to Maine is a stretch. If Maine had won we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

it used to be fun to debate hockey on here, but for the past few years it feels like we're all beating a dead horse. This team isn't any good, and that's been a trend for a few years now.

Call me a dreamer, but if Red wants to make good on his promise, he needs to step down and make room for somebody else who might possibly get Maine within shouting distance of respectability again. He hasn't done that with Tim's leftovers -nevermind that Byron and Brown are the cream of the crop right now- and his own recruits are lackluster, to say the least. There has been zero progress. I actually believe that Whitehead would have done better.

Bring in a Corkum, who can say that he knows how Maine used to win, and can say that he earned enough at the next level to have retired yesterday. We need guys who seriously regard their majors as a "pre-NHL" again. There is literally nothing to lose.

I don't blame you for being disappointed. Maine should have three or four more wins at this point. It's hard to believe they couldn't get any wins out of the Colgate and UNH weekends. Hopefully Herner, Doherty, and Hoglund can make an impact but who knows. I think Maine definitely has more of 'pre-NHL' attitude now than under Timmy but if its enough I'm not sure. I encourage you to do a bit of research on some of the kids Maine has lined up for the next few years. There are some good ones and hopefully them along with this year's freshmen class can get Maine back to respectability.

If there is one area Red should get some credit it is goaltending. Maine wasn't going anywhere with Morris and Romeo and it says a lot that the walk-on Red brought in is a lot better than either of them. It looks like Swayman and Beck will both be legitimate D-1 goalies and that should make a big difference.

I think either Guite or Tyler Walsh is Maine's next head coach whenever Red's time is up.

Dear God in heaven, please make this happen. The mind boggles at just how much *fun* either/both could be. :D

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

His play was helped greatly by Maine missing empty net opportunities.
Trust me he (Tirone) made many-many key saves to go with Maine's errant whiffs and wide angle shots. Maine fan here but Tirone has Maine's number when they play.

I agree with you. Kimball Union is off to another fine start (5-0-0). He has 10 seniors, 9 of which are listed as top players on the elite prospect web site.

It appears at this point, that Gendron continues to play "smashmouth" hockey in a league that will not condone it.
