Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Bunch of thoughtful, quality, posts on here lately. Nice job, guys.

This issue is complicated, but we all essentially agree that it comes down to recruiting, and that's not necessarily about money nor venue... To my point, Walsh took over an awful program with no track-record, situated in the Great White North, and turned it into a juggernaut via personal charisma and sheer force of will. Bazin et al have recently accomplished similar feats elsewhere.

I don't think Red can do such a thing, or even come close. Not launching a personal attack here, but he impresses me as a quirky, grumpy old man who struggles to connect with young people. Yes, this Fr. class is better than last year's, but that's not saying much, and the best players wearing Maine blue this season -Byron and Brown- are Whitehead recruits.

I personally don't like his demeanor (Gendron), and I don't find him particularly articulate when being interviewed. No idea how players relate to him and his ability to motivate players. As someone else said here, "he puts me to sleep". Time will certainly tell us if he will be able to recruit enough talent to compete for a national title.

Rob McGovern is the best player on the ice. Think of what their record would be if romeo and morris played every game.

Yeah, maybe. I dunno. My worry is that if Maine keeps trying to find the next Shawn, and fires about 5 coaches after they each get 3-4 years to prove they aren't Shawn, the last 5 years will look like a golden age.

I'm with you 100% on that and was a reason I wanted Timmy fired much later than others.

What is Guite like as a speaker? I don't know if I would even recognize the sound of his voice. It seems like he has done a lot of the recruiting, which so far looks impressive. Does he potentially have the personality to be effective as a coach? It's encouraging to me that between Guite and Shawn's son we have two people in the future who would be promising candidates.

What a crucial series for both teams this weekend! Always one of my favorite weekends of the year! Battle of contrasting styles. Friday night Maine will need to bottle up UNH's top line Salvaggio/McNicholas/Kelleher which is a difficult task on the big sheet and with the line change advantage. As always penalty discipline is important, however, it will be crucial this weekend as UNH is operating above 20% on the PP. Grasso and Cleland join the top line on the power play which has proved to be an exceptional unit all season. Tirone has been up and down in net this year but overall solid. He always seems to play up against Maine. Freshman Anthony Wyse is up an coming for the Wildcats. Maine's speed is better this year so it will be interesting to see how they fair against UNH in Durham. Maine will need a strong showing in net and the d-men will need to keep forwards in front of them, move side to side to keep the puck in the zone and clear the puck efficiently out of the defensive zone. Schurhamer will need to step up his play this weekend otherwise Kelleher and Grasso on the RW could have a lot of opportunities. So important for Maine to come out with high energy and compete level.

wow glad someone is talking about this series!! Good synopsis on the Friday night affair...Sat. at your house is always a different story! A few of us agree on the 'Cat side of things feel that this series will matter down the road when the HE tournament rankings will matter most. HE points could come hard for the 'Cats after Jan. 1 so we are looking to grab 'em where/when we can. See ya Friday! And from what I hear tix are selling fast doubt it will be a full house but prob the biggest crowd of the year. Oh, and wear white...:p:D

The good ol days of USCHO a Maine UHN weekend would have a separate thread with 100s of posts in it. Now, we got nothing but a couple of thoughtful posts, what fun is that? No yapping about NCAA violations or Ben Guite trying to murder Mark Mowers. No Skating Mother Theresa or we got 2 how about you. Sad, really it is. How the mighty have fallen.

And they both shall arise again !!! (It may be in the next millennium but who's counting ):)

Problem with this approach is you end up with the fan base you have now, no juice for a UNH series because everyone has given up.

I don't know what the right answer is. There's merit in stability too.

I think if there was an easy answer, we'd have a good hockey program right now. It is really easy to not care about a given game's results at the moment, that I agree with.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

I'm getting cranked up for the weekend series. Every weekend is different, I'd like to see them steal a key game here or there.
Probably a split this weekend - home teams win.

I'm in agreement probably a home and home split. Maine dominated UNH last year at home but Tirone was standing on his head and UNH got a couple of breaks and squeaked out a tie. I don't see that happening this year. Maine has played a tougher schedule so far and performed quite well against top competition so maybe an early Christmas present series sweep! I can't wait for tomorrow night's game. Won't be able to make it down there but will be watching online.

GO BLUE!

Technology has changed the world. There are just too many distractions and too easy to sit home on your computer, where you can log into ESPN435 and watch 2,000 games. :D

I didn't interpret that as a knock against the teams. More on the state of society. It's almost impossible to keep the distractions out. You can watch 6,000 channels on DirecTV, for example. I can watch 10 movies a day if I want. When I grew up, we got 3 TV stations and radio. Period. :) And TV went "off the air" at midnight. Now, there is no such thing as a "blackout." It's 24/7 for everything...

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

It may not be the good ol' days but I am thankful for the ability to stream tonight's game utilizing modern technology/distractions without having to drive 5 hours, stay in a hotel, and throw away my Saturday completely. Friends and family will come over for dinner and we'll have some drinks. I am feeling optimistic about tonight's game. UNH has been quite rocky at home 5-1 loss to Bentley, 2-2 tie with Sacred Heart, 4-5 loss to Arizona State, barely sneaking by Colorado College 4-3. In fact they have only played 4 road games thus far and one neutral site game while playing 9 games at the Whit. Both teams are likely to be without key contributors this weekend, Nazarian for UNH, and Fossier for UMaine. It will be interesting to see what Red goes with for line combos this weekend. Does he change things up for the big sheet Friday night vs. Alfond Saturday. Obviously his choices are slim as we only have 13 healthy and eligible forwards. Obviously the Gibson/Brown/Byron line stay, other than the second game against UVM (which was very poor) they have played well with each other. The Brown game line combinations of Vesey/Pearson/Shea & Robbins/Lacroix/Smith look appealing to me against UNH. Both combos provide good speed and end-to-end ability. That leaves some combination of Perez/Housakos/Pappalardo/Hayes. Right about now would be a great time for Papp to pick up his play. He is still pointless in blue which is quite surprising. He has had a knack for big games in the past perhaps tonight he comes through! It will be interesting to see if Becker gets the nod tonight over Cochrane. Becker is a little better skater which could be beneficial on the big sheet especially on the left side of the blue line having to deal with Kelleher & Grasso. And we can only hope it is Rob in net both nights.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Good start in the first tonight but the second brought the penalties. You can't give UNH that many PPs on home ice and expect to win.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Tied at #35 in the PW right now, let's see who can move up to #34 tomorrow! :p
