Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Got a point but should have had a split. This series reminded me of the last few seasons on the road. Play decent on friday but make a mistake late and pay for it. Lose on Saturday easily.

Maine needs a PP

What on earth were you watching? I didn't see last night but Maine was incredibly lucky to get a point Friday night. What happened to Smith and Brown? Maine's better than in the past but it's going to be hard for them with four or five guys unavailable for selection.

Don't most teams that get outshot 32-9 after the first period win the game?

I didn't watch this weekend, but how many of these are legit penalties and how many were because the referees are going insane at the start of the season? Some teams are spending half the game killing penalties. Arizona State is averaging almost 40 minutes worth of penalties a night. Granted, it's ASU but still. How many of these penalties are going to be called in January?

I read an article somewhere (here?) saying that the NCAA had sent out the new parameters on interpreting penalties in the rule book to the conferences, to disseminate to their league members. ASU, not being in a conference, didn't get the memo until after the Notre Dame series. What's Maine's excuse? Other teams seem to be figuring it out.

It's the shots on goal argument, maybe you should get in the unh thread. Maine had a lead with less than 5 minutes to play
, they should have closed it out instead they took a penalty and got a tie

Miami had almost as many penalties as maine last night. Miami has a PP, Maine not so much

Michel had to take the penalty, the Miami player had a rebound and was going to score if he didn't. I don't think its a coincidence that three Miami PP goals this weekend came with Michel in the box. I really don't think Maine has been that much worse than other teams this year as far as taking penalties. Look at Quinnipiac, they gave Maine 12 PP's in a game.

I think Arizona State may have gotten the memo just fine. They aren't relying on the Pony Express anymore.

Other teams are not figuring it out any better than Maine. After last night Maine is averaging 8.3 penalties per game (18 in the NCAA) whereas Boston University is more than double that and ranked right behind the Sun Devils in penalties per game. This weekend the Bears were called for 19 penalties, same as Providence and Northeastern. Boston University was called for 29. Merrimack had 22.

For comparison, last season Maine was 8th in the NCAA with 5.5 penalties per game.

So my question remains how much of this is caused by "real" penalties that will be consistently called all season and which are the result of referees caring about that "guidance" from their leagues and will go back to normal in a few weeks? Or is this the new normal and every game is going to seem like an endless parade to the penalty box?

It sounds like some of the penalties were legitimate and others might not be called in usual circumstances. Considering the difference in penalties from last season I would tend to think the number will return to normal.

So we got a look at Mundinger last night. He is a big dude, looks to be pretty athletic.
With experience, coaching and working hard he could be a good one.

And I might add, Miami has a great PK too killing the last 26 PP's going back to the first game of the season.

This is the new usual. The normal. Teams have to figure that out. Some penalties will always be ticky-tack. But the boarding, slashing, and holding penalties have to be eliminated if the team is to be successful.

He's awful. I've seen him a lot at practices and the like. He's a big body who isn't mobile at all honestly. He's not going to be anything

He was brought in to be a practice goalie, I'm sure he'll improve but how much?

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Maine has given up seven power play goals. For each of the last four it was Michel in the box.

From what I've seen of Mundinger, this assessment is pretty accurate. He relies mostly on his size (which, being fully honest, I mean I might do if I were 6'8"), but you definitely get the sense that he still has a ways to go on his skates. I'll give him credit that he moves well from post-to-post, but that is pretty standard of most goalies these days (and could also be because of his size).

I'm curious to see if Mundinger will get the chance to develop into even a serviceable back-up before the Beck/Swayman combo arrives in 2018. He'll more than likely will be given the opportunity in the short term, as it seems he's already won that job over Morris.

I'm trying to figure out what this means, Michel kills penalties well?, his penalties are killing the team? its coincidence?

I haven't heard a peep about Morris doing anything wrong but I'd guess that since he's one of the holdovers from the TW era (and isn't one of Gendron's guys) there wouldn't be as much reason to play him over one of the two youngsters. That's how I'm looking at it unless we hear otherwise.

Michel is really good. Hopefully once Herner is eligible be can provide some cover for when Michel is in the box.

Michel being a free agent makes me nervous come spring. I don't think he's ready for the pros but I could see a team giving him a shot.

I'll bet he will be a lot lighter before his career is over at Maine.
