Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

As far as I'm concerned the penalties were more on Federico and Bunyon than anything else. They made way too many soft calls against both teams. Hopefully the foolishness comes to an end soon.

I was very happy last night with everything. It's hard to think of one player who had a bad game. The PP is mostly new personnel and I think in time it will improve. The coaches have only been able to work with them for a week. One of the most impressive things is that supposedly two of Maine's better freshmen didn't even play last night. I have a suspicion there are going to be a lot of folks owing Red an apology.

If Herner is as good as staff thinks, that will certainly help out. Watching Shea catch guys from behind was a welcome sight. I guess I was wrong on Vesey goal, he set it up but it was Pearson. Probably right on PP, need some time to get young guys used to each other.

Penalty's were called because they are out to enforce the rules and get it into the players head what will be called...may just be for 5-6-7 games then a slack off with calls, but they were called the same for both teams.

Yeah it was all 5 by freshman. Pretty crazy. Of course 3 of those from Fossiers hatty. Good stuff

My Three Star Selection in game #1.

1. Fossier

2. Vesey

3. McGovern

I like Holway on D and believe him and Michel may be the best defensive pair in the league in the future.

Agree on Holway. Looks real comfortable out there. Anxious to see this Herndon kid

Mitchell Fossier scored the first hat trick by a freshman since Nolan Vesey on 2/21/15. It is the first hat trick in a debut that I could find.

I know we did the five goals in a game by freshmen in 92-93 but I am still looking for something later. I have gone back from now to 2011 and have yet to find any. If my laptop cooperates the search will continue today.

As was pointed out below, last season the freshmen scored eight goals all season. This year's class is well on the way to shattering that. In 1992-93 our freshman class scored 71 so they still have a ways to go.

ETA:
(The seven 89-90 freshmen scored 87 goals which I believe is the record. Four freshmen in 92-93 scored 71)

Any idea when the last time Maine scored five or more goals in a game and none were from the first line? It has to be at least 10 years.

In terms of the penalties, if you guys were to look at some boxes from around the league last night, there were a lot of power plays in other games, not just Maine's. I think you're going to see that a lot early in the season as refs call a lot of these "touch penalties."

But, you'll probably see teams adjust more as the season goes.

Hopefully the refs get their act together too. I can't speak for others but I go to the games to watch the players, not referees.

Who is it going to be tonight? Last nights team or last years team? Hope Rob is in net. I imagine RPI will play a different game, lets see if Red and company can counter it

Mundinger on the bench again tonight? Morris not dressed.

Someone on Facebook raised a good point. The four 92-93 freshman were all forwards and scored their 71 in just 135 games played. The 89-90 freshmen scored 87 in 229 games played, although that number is skewed slightly by defenseman Dan Murphy's 42 games. The '93 kids scored .53 GPG and without Murphy the '90 group scored .47 GPG.

Great come from behind win. Unreal. They looked like crap for 2 periods but kept it close. Played awesome in 3rd. Rob was the man who kept them in it. Finally a goalie who kept them in it

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

The last time Maine started 2-0 was 2006-07 when they opened 7-0 and went to the Frozen Four.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

The freshmen have now scored seven goals. A very solid start for them.

Last night's hat trick hero Mitchell Fossier notched the GWG - his second in two games. I'm not going to go back and look but I'll bet all the money in my checking account that is the best start in UM history.

Cam Brown and Blaine Byron hooked up for a nice goal in the first period. It is imperative that duo catch fire this season.

The last time Maine entered the third period behind and scored three goals to win was 11/1/14 when they turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 victory vs UMass.

The last time Maine played and won the first two games at home was 1999-2000 when they swept the Gophers.

Over 1400 tickets remain available for Friday's game vs Quinnipiac on Homecoming weekend. Get on it.
