Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

So on Saturday we have:

12 noon - UM Football vs. #17 Albany

3:00pm - Donald Trump @ CIC

7:00pm - UM Hockey vs. #3 Quinnipiac

Not to mention the Homecoming Craft Fair! I think that there might be some extra traffic in the area that day. ;)

Stay the hell away from Bangor and those darn Trump supporters :D

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Got to see both games last weekend, and am cautiously optimistic that Maine will have a decent shot at finishing with double-digit wins this season. The Fr. class didn't wow me on paper, but exceeded my expectations on the ice. Hoping that Byron and Brown will benefit from having more talent around them; I really expected more from those guys than what I've seen so far.

Still, holding serve at home vs. a mediocre RPI team isn't earth-shaking, and young players tend to wilt down the stretch of a long season. Mac's numbers were eye-popping last weekend, but it seemed to me that the puck found him as often as he found it.

If Maine comes away with 2 points vs. The Q, I'll sip the Kool-Aid; if they do better than that, I'll have a chug or two. I'm ticketed-up for the Colgate games in any case. The next three weekends will tell us a lot about Maine's prospects. If they leave Hamilton with 5 or 6 wins on the season, I'll be loving Life.

I thought Maine's play was actually a lot more impressive than the results. There were three things I really liked; Maine dominated the first game, managed to come back in the second game, and finally in the second game hung on at the end. It was nice to see all four lines being rolled out all weekend too. I think if Maine can split this weekend and next they actually give themselves a pretty decent chance at an NCAA spot. The schedule is very much in Maine's favor this year.

Black Bears played Q twice last season. Game 1 at Q, they got smoked 4-0. Game 2 at Alfond, don't forget the Q tied it up with 47 seconds left on a PP goal. Maine had led almost the entire game. I realize that this and $1.80 will get you a small Starbucks but a split this weekend is not some ridiculous pipe dream. Red has more going on up there than his Belichek style allows him to spill. This is a very tough 2 game series way early in the season that will tell us a little more than we realize. I'm going split. If they do, it will give a very young team some great confidence that they can play with anyone. They have to learn to win. The earlier, the better.

They know how to lose, keep taking penalties. Q up 2 zip after a 5 on 3 goal and then a 5 on 4

This team is going nowhere without a powerplay

to be fair, the lacroix penalty to put maine on the 5x3 pk was pretty ticky tack... one of those new points of emphasis that is absolutely sucking the flow and life out of games...

Nothing like a little talent on board to make a huge change in compete level

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Best PP of the night for the bears, unreal win. This team folds like a cheap tent if it was last year. Great win

Finally great to see this level of effort and getting the reward for it. A sweep would be special,, wink wink😂 and you gave up your tickets !

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

When I first checked USCHO at about 8:30, the scoreboard said Q was ahead 3-1 at the end of 2 periods, which made me wonder, because the game started at 7:30 and there wasn't enough time for two full periods. Well, I checked the stats at www.blackbear.com, and they said it was 0-0 after one period, which is what the Channel l4 live broadcast said, as well.
As it turned out, it was 3-1 at one point, but when I checked USCHO at the end of two periods, they accurately reported Q ahead 2-0. Go Bears!
