Least Maine didn't get smoked like last year

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Maine got smoked by New Brunswick last year, losing an exhibition game to a Canadian college isn't a good sign.

It was the kiss of death for Boston College last season.

Taking six penalties, giving up two 5x3's and getting hit with a 5-minute major that all leads to four goals isn't a recipe for success. Whodathunkit?

5x5 this team appears to match up pretty well. Stay disciplined and this team will exceed expectations (I wouldn't buy tickets for the Garden, Dan needs to settle down) but this team will certainly finish better than dead last.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

I gave up my season tickets, but a friend had an extra ticket. Good student attendance, the middle lower sections were about half full (approximately). Goal tending about the same as last year. Pearson, Pappalardo and Cochrane saw a lot of playing time. They played pretty well. Holway played many minutes as a defenseman. No discipline on the team so far. Hayes resumed his play where he left off two years ago. Gendron pulls the goal tender right after a Maine power play late in the 3rd period and the axe men score. May want to consider pulling the goal tender while on the PP. Special teams were bad also. 1 for 7 on PP. Having said all of this I think they will be better than last year and not finish last.

They need to figure out a way to fill in the sections behind the benches. It is a bad look when they are always empty.

I was pretty happy with how all the freshmen played. They are much faster than the players they replaced and it looks like they bring a lot more scoring to the table as well. Smith was a pleasant surprise and Housakos just about falls in that category as well. The ones who were more highly regarded came as advertised.

The whole junior class has been pretty underwhelming as far as I'm concerned. I wonder whether Hamilton and Lacroix missed the game through injury or suspension? They likely would have helped the PK some. It will be interesting to see if any of the four juniors graduated this year and don't come back similar to what happened with Campbell and Morgan.

Drew have you ever watched a game behind the benches/first 3 rows are horrible to see....players up and Coaches walking back and forth, the worst section to see action there is(imo).

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

I didn't watch the whole game, my video didn't work, then it did. My biggest takeaway was snatching defeat from the jaws of victory once again. Complete meltdown in 2nd period. Whether newcomers are better or worse will take time to determine. Morris doesn't look any better in net. We will have to see if they improve over the course of the season.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

I saw some promise from the freshman and a few upper classmen looked to play better. Granted it was an exhibition game and the team still has to learn one another.
Good student turn out - that was good to see.

Holway saw a lot of time and I thought played very well on D, has a good hard shot, and patience.
Pappalardo was on the starting line and played well also, seems to have good hands and went to the net. He got a rebound goal.
Pearson could also be a good one, has good hands and stick handling, good skater.
First year players Smith, Cochrane, Housakos also played.

Robbins is fun to watch and has real potential when he finds his shot, not afraid to hit along the boards, has some nice moves and maybe a little more speed than last year.
Byron also looks like he stepped up his game. Vesey got a goal and looked OK when he played.

I thought Rob looked good in the net, looks like he has improved - positions well and doesn’t thrash around. He looks fit.
Morris, well, still too many rebounds and not positioning well. I think we will see Rob more this year.

The ugly was the second period due to penalties, not sure what happened there its like they all checked out and thought the first period was good enough.

Those on the roster not suited yesterday – Herner, Fossier, Lacroix, Pieper, Doherty, Hoglund, Hamilton.

RPI games will be interesting – Go Bears

Forgot - Shea also played. To me he looked like he wasn't comfortable and uncertain what other players would do. Just like they haven't played together much.
Looks like a good skater and could contribute.

I have indeed and agree, but there are very few perfect seats in the whole arena. If the tickets were priced appropriately they would certainly sell. Before they started the gimmick of charging extra for individual game 'donor seats' they were always full.

The team wasn't in the toilet when the prices were better, I don't think they'd sell now no matter the price. Who's gonna pay to watch this crap?

Maybe if they had sent players to grammar schools in the area this past week with free tickets for kids possibly they would have dragged their parents there helping with attendance. Just a thought!!!!

Yeah, that certainly makes a difference. I was actually shocked attendance was as good as it was yesterday with everything else going on; lot of NFL games, Ortiz's last regular season game, and conclusion of the Ryder Cup. Even though the last 10 years have been tough there is still a lot of love for Maine Hockey and I think most fans realize that things are heading in the right direction.

Off-topic -I do that sometimes- but what a comeback for football on Saturday. Josh Mack was electric; go watch him. I predict a little run of three more wins, then with 'Nova and UNH at home..? Might turn out to be a nice year.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

According to HE Online, you guys actually tied, 3-3 (well, that is, if you only read the headline).

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

New to the posting, but I have read every post for the last 10 years. This team looks to be better than the last two. I hope Shurhamer or Michael can be this years Renouf! We need a decent Dman! Listened to the game this past Sunday, typical Maine look great and sh$& themselves! Does anyone know if Red gets HOT! I don't understand how that many penalties could occur without a coach losing his sh$&?

I'm pretty sure Red let them know. if you ever talked to him you would know Red is pretty intense at times.

Rob in net on friday, after that we will see who plays. Wonder if Malcolm sits for the major? How many Freshman start?

Red? No! He stays cool as a cucumber no matter what is happening. I certainly was never on the receiving end of anything remotely resembling a tirade. I'm sure every player who has ever played for him will tell you what a warm and cuddly figure he is.
