UMaine 25-26: Marques My Word: Back to the Big Time

If anyone has access to BDN, Larry has his annual season wrapup including comments from Barr. In summary, Barr says the team's poor culture and weak goal tending were too much to overcome. With 13 new players being introduced to college hockey some of them didn't realize how difficult it was going to be. Some played well and then disappeared. He said bringing in another goal tender is risky. Sounds like he is going to stick with those two unless they opt out. He said he would never have such a young team again.
This makes sense, Ive seen people online say that CHL guys were taken aback by the transition to NCAA, and that despite playing more games in the CHL leagues, it was much more demanding in college, and that the training, nutrition, video work, etc were all much more robust in the college ranks than in juniors. I think this was probably a universal thing across the nation, just that Maine had I believe the most CHL imports of any team in D1 so we were the most impacted by it.

Sirman was awful

To be fair to him, he was brought in to back up Scott Darling, but then Darling had his alcohol problems, got suspended a bunch of times, and ultimately dismissed. Sirman ended up needing to cover that bridge year between Darling and Martin Ouellette.

Had one of the oldest teams in hockey east

In regard to larries article, I would say from Barrs quotes he might not be looking so hard at chl players in the near future. They dont seem to fit his culture vision of hard work.

I read into it more as probably not so many young players all at once (if avoidable), and to be better prepared to acclimate them to what a jump it is from juniors to college.

It sounds like Barr kind of owned that he wasn't ready for that and it caused a lot of growing pains throughout the season. It also probably explains why so many of those guys were in the doghouse at various points of the season.

But it wouldn't be wise for Maine to ignore a recruiting pipeline that we're well-positioned geographically to scout and pull players from.

It sounds like Motzko is getting fired at Minnesota. I don't like Minnesota fan's throwing Barr's name out there.
I think its inevitable that he gets mentioned, being a Minnesota guy and all. Hopefully they can't pry him away from us. Main thing that gives me some comfort is that all of his college playing experience and almost all of his coaching experience is in the east, and the one that wasnt was at WMU (i.e, not in MN), so maybe he's used to being out here at this point?

The dream scenario would be Barr leveraging the Minnesota offer to get Maine to commit more resources to the program, be it NIL, recruiting budget, rev share....

But if Minnesota really wants him, they'll get him. Not only salary for him, but assistant salary pool, player acquisition funds (from whatever source), etc., Maine can't compete with Big Ten money.

Good point about leveraging for more funding....he's the only coach on campus that could do that.

Not that it would necessarily go to the hockey team, but I believe if he left the school would get compensation from UMN.
