UMaine 25-26: Marques My Word: Back to the Big Time

On subject of face offs:
********************
Lipinski 17-5 for FO% of 77.3%
Scott 25-16 for FO% of 61%
Komarov 7-9 17-5 for FO% of 43.8%
Scholle 8-14 for FO% of 36.4%
Freel 3-1 for FO% of 75%
Fowler 2-3 for FO% of 40%
Nadeau 1-3 for FO% of 25%

Scholle is new to this, so let’s see if his face off abilities improve. He played center for the first time this weekend, I believe. Last year he only took 4 face offs and lost all of them. So this is new territory for him.

Komarov won 45.4% of face offs last year. So no change in that so far this year. Was hoping he would improve over time at winning face offs.

Every team in the meaningless poll ahead of us either lost or tied a game this weekend. So while I think there is a chance we are polled #1 come Monday I don't think we will be.

Also the person who pick Michigan as #1 in the poll at the beginning of the year is starting to look like a genius as of now.
My top 10 after this weekend:

1. Michigan
2. BU
3. Maine
4. Penn State
5. Michigan State
6. BC
7. Denver
8. UMass
9. Providence
10. Quinnipiac

Western Michigan & North Dakota just outside of Top 10

How does Maine drop a spot in the meaningless poll after sweeping in resounding fashion?

Michigan jumps them....no problem with that.

BU ties Colgate at home and jumps to #1.
Denver ties Air Force and stays at #5.
Michigan State loses to UNH at home and falls 1 spot.
Western Michigan loses Ferris State at home and falls 1 spot.
Penn State loses to Clarkson at home and falls 1 spot.

I still think the top 5 should be:

1. Michigan
2. BU
3. Maine
4. Penn State
5. Michigan State

It is because Michigan leapfrogged. And they didn’t give any significance to Maine eating a cupcake.

Michigan should have leapfrogged to #1. And losing to cupcakes at home should drop you more than 1 spot when you haven’t proven anything yet this season.

That's the issue with the poll. Priors play so heavily early in the season. They have to start asking is it more likely that Clarkson is better than expected (and therefore a better loss) or is Providence overrated (and therefore worse wins). The reality is that trying to determine the best teams 2 games into the season is a fool's errand.

It's too dang quiet on here going into a top 10 matchup this weekend. What do y'all expect from the Quinnipiac series?
i'd be super happy with a split. hard to imagine that the freshmen get the same time and space they enjoyed... i wouldn't put much credence in QU's loss vs. Alaska last week, they're a skilled and experienced team and will capitalize on many of the sloppy plays that we made last weekend (breakaways, failed breakouts, PPs). that said, if they want to focus overtly on poirier, it just gives more space to JN which is where he historically has thrived.

In my opinion, a split is the most likely outcome, and would be satisfactory. A sweep would be above expectations and would be fantastic, and getting swept would be a disappointment. I agree that it will look much tougher than last weekend did and will be a good early test for the team to hopefully come together and gel even more.

Certainly not expecting a sweep either way in this series, but will be curious to see how well the new players adapt to the first test on the road. Will make for a good litmus test because if they're sloppy with some of the D-zone turnovers like we saw against HC a quality team like Quinnipiac will punish them for those mistakes. The last few series Maine has taken the first game and then Quinnipiac has punched back in the second game (even the OT win last year Maine had to come back after blowing a lead) so wonder if that will hold true again.

I'm actually a bit more worried about the offense than defense. There are enough veterans on the blue line that I trust to tighten up and Boija increases the margin for error.
However, QU has given a total of 9 goals in 4 games (including the exhibition) against mostly Power conference opponents. I'm worried the freshman won't have the time or space they got against HC. All that said, give me a split with at least one game going to OT.

Boija is the great equalizer. I wonder if Maines team speed helps get some open ice? I expect Q to be physical and Maine to get some PPs but after last weekend I'm not sure they will capitalize on them. I see a split. Really hard to predict when I haven't seen Q play

Q squeaked by an average BC team (yes, BC beat and tied a 1-2-1 Minnesota team that split with Michigan Tech at home)......lost to 1-3 Alaska who has been crushed my Duluth 5-1 & 4-1 and ASU 5-2.....and beat an 0-2 Notre Dame who has given up 12 goals in their first 2 games.

I expect Q to rise to the occasion. Interesting we are playing down there again this year. Dont underestimate what Rick Bennett knows about them and their weaknesses

Gerrior with his first goal as he gets a turnover, goes to the net, puts moves on, and ultimately deposits backhand behind a goalie that bit and was down on his stomach. What a move.

Maine 1-0
